How's this for camo?

I cut this 1.25" hickory sapling spring last year while hunting morels (you need a good stick to walk and find mushrooms), roughed it out and did some straightening this spring. Inspired by Druid's sapling bows and stories of pioneers making on-the-spot bows, I got up early this morning and made a bow from it. Bark on back and handle 70" NTN 53# @ 28" stub arrow rest. Sprayed a coat of fast drying shellac and took it to the yard to shoot in.

I am surprised how well this bow shoots.

Update 11/16 Slight tiller adjustments took 2 pounds off. Bark is still holding well. Blunt flu flu connected with rabbit today. Some help from my Teckel Grätsche. Medieval garb from St Huberts Rangers - check out their website

To answer your question, it is pretty good for camo ::)
You've been on a rampage.
-
That is very nice Shaun! Thats the first bark on hickory ive seen. I didnt even know that would work.
-
Now that's PRIMITIVE ...hope it stays together..I've seen people leave too thick of cambium on hickory(let alone bark) n seen there bows break 50 or so shots in. Like the arrow rest
-
With that sweet bend I'd take it hunting too. Nice bow!

That certainly does have the primitive look. I really like it! I wonder how leaving the bark on other types of wood would work. Heck, it certainly reduces the chances of violating a ring!
-
Very nice tiller and primitive look
-
very nice, hope she holds. I tried leaving the cambium on a 48" cypress, loved the red cedar look, but it keep popping while exercising the limbs. Good luck. Lets us know how she holds up. Thanks for sharing.
-
very ancient look, except the arrow shelf.
I have tried leaving bark on bows several times - and always got loud cracks (thought it was the limb, but wasn't) and popped off after some time. Did this on many different woods, only some sorts of cherry and plum still holding together. But it is only for the eyes or camo - no backing, because the fibers on prunus are not laying lengthwise but across.

Nice job on that stick. Simple and effective. :)

The bark will come off with time. What I have did was took the bark after it's came off or I finshed pilling it off and glued it back on. But like simson said there's backing surport there.

Nice looking simple bow . I hope the bark stays on as it looks pretty cool. 8)
You have been busy this week Shaun... ;D

That's pretty cool! I love the tiller! Josh

modified first post with update

It looks like the bark on Hickory stick 1 Rabbit 0 Nice job!
-
Love it . Small question though................. Why do you use flu-flus for rabbit? Does your hunting companion have a tendancy to tree them? :)
-
Very nice primitive look.Gettin game while shooting it in.Kudos to ya.
-
Nice shootin

Shaun-
Very nice, and the St. Hubert's Rangers website is interesting. Thanks for posting.

That's the best arrow rest I have ever seen!
And I love your wonderful erdhund (earth hound), excellent choice for rabbit hunting. Those dachsies always make me wonder how they can stuff so much personality into such a small package? The legs may be short, but they reach the ground when he stands up, and that's all that counts!
-
haha didn't notice the arrow rest. Nice work indeed.
-
Neat pictures! Thanks for sharing the St. Hubert's Rangers' website! I just finished putting together a medieval kit. I will have to get some pictures taken and submit an application!
-
Great bow!! I got some time off next week for thanksgiving and I think I need to take a walk threw the woods to find myself a hickory sapling
-
Way to go Shaun. Good shooting. Heck, that rabbit looks as big as the dog... :D
-
Great pictures and amazing lookin bow about as primitive as it gets.
-
Yeah, that is a nice size rabbit. Nice work on the bow and the kill!
