Hey everybody,
I was hoping that the combined experiences of our board members might be able to identify this thing. I dug it up in my backyard after getting a hit with my metal detector. The first thing I found (which set off the detector) was a VW hubcap. That was a cool surprise. Then I kept digging and found this:

It looks like a panel that was made to be load-bearing, like an access panel on a boat. It wasn't very heavy once I knocked the dirt off.
Any ideas? I'm stumped.

Sorry, i dont have a clue.

could be what off-roaders use when they get stuck in the mud. to spread the weight of the vehicle and help them get out.

ps metal detecting is my main hobby. if you are new to it you will soon find out there is lots of metal under ground and most of it is not silver or gold lol. :(

Looks like the floor under carriage of a VW van :-\.
-
It could be from anything my idea is some kind of running board from a trailer or machine kinda like a step
-
I know exactly what it is................$0.30 worth of scrap metal ;D
Maybe half of an old steel loading ramp?

All great ideas, but I'm thinking that this one could be a match. Since I found a hubcap, it seems likely that nearby debris could be related. I'm going to look into this, see what I find.
Thanks for all the suggestions!

What kind of metal detector do you use my dad has a whites brand one

Look at the one picture and you will see the channel where the clutch cable ran through. I'd say a VW van or flat bed truck with fold down panels, 1958-60?.

Look for the initials " JH ", and then a skeleton........ ::) :P ;D ;D ;D
Is your house built on or near an old junk yard, or land fill? When I was a kid, the Lake worth Jr. high school athletic field was at one time an old junk yard, and every now and then, while playing out there, especially after a rain, we would find old car parts. It was at one time a fantastic huckleberry field too! Darn board of education! >:( Apparently they never had one of my Mom's homemade huckleberry pies! ;)

Awesome! I just have to keep digging! And I'll need lots of Scooby snacks.
In reference to the location, I'm told my property used to be a farm. There is a pipe sticking out of our yard that we thought was a property marker, but turned out the be what was left of an old hand-pump. I dug up four custom made horseshoes as well - not the pot-metal ones that come with the game from the store, but four real ones, each one unique and obviously fitted.
I definitely need to keep digging - maybe I'll find the rest of the van!
Thanks so much guys, I really appreciate the 'sleuthing'. Guess this is one we can't blame on the 'darn kids'. :D
