It looks like a granddaddy Osage orange to me.  Beautiful rings on it too!  Josh

Sadly this tree is no more since it was blown down by that wind storm awhile ago.but what I can tell from the dead leaves still attached to some twigs it was a very broad leafed tree.

yes it was thorny and if it osage then its pretty rare to find it around here i been looking hard for the large green fruit it produces and asking around and no one has ever seen one around here so i guess i just got lucky!

Sure looks like osage to me.  Not every tree produces fruit.

I'm pretty sure there are male and female trees with only the females dropping fruit.  I saw a big female osage in a front yard yesterday with more fruit on the ground than I'd ever seen under a single tree.  They were hauling off wheel barrel loads of the hedge apples and you could barely see the grass under the entire tree, probably a 50' diameter circle.  I wondered if I couldn't have gotten permission to cut that one out if I'd asked right then?  Anyway, that tree you have looks awesome, real thin sapwood and thick rings.  Should make good bows.

I have to agree with everybody - Osage.
