Title: My first self nocked and fletched arrows

Here is my first set of home-made arrows. They are a mix of modern and primitive. The shafts were generously donated from my friend, CMB. They are doug-fir. The tips are normal 125 grain field points. I used pine pitch, hide glue, wild turkey feathers and sinew to fletch them. and I cut and filed the nocks and reinforced them with sinew wrapping. CMB showed me his technique to make these so between that and the shafts, the sinew and the hide glue these arrows owe a good deal to him. I stained them with brown and black leather dye and decorated them with acrylic paint. I sealed them with spar varnish. I'm quite pleased with them, they shoot very straight and reliably, now if I can just point them in the right spot every time.  ::)

      Great Job!!!   Now I know where to bring my bare shafts for finishing ;)  I really like the dye job.

Those look awesome. I understand why you put "modern" tips on them, so you can use them again and again. With stone or something soft you'll probably only get one use out of them.

How'd you get the shafts so straight?

edit: i've been thinking of wood for shafts but steaming or heating each one seems like a lot of work

edit 2: whatever i find has a bend in it in some place, nothing i find is straight

Guessed, I can't take credit for the straightness of the shafts. They were professionally made shafts. I just stained, nocked, fletched and cut them. Some day I'll tackle my own shafts. I'd like to try red osier dogwood.

Ain't it great to see one of your own arrows fly straight to the mark?!  Great job.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone! I have one that is flying very wonky. The shaft is straight so it's not that. It must be the fletching. one of the feathers has a cup shape to it, maybe that is grabbing the air and sending it into a funny spin.
