Title: Rawhide dog chews
Post by: basil_brush on September 23, 2007, 03:16:22 pm
Most rawhide dog chews are translucent brown, yet natural rawhide is opaque white. What do they do to the hide to make it translucent like that?

I think a lot of it has to do with how it is processed. There are ways to make the opaque hides transparent but someone else will have to tell you how.    Pat

I'm not certain basil, but I soaked a coupla deer hides in crystal drano/ water solution to make the hair slip. One batch was a little stout and I had translucent patches all over the hide - didn't seem to hurt it though.
