Title: Hickory Selfy
Post by: Ryan_Gill_HuntPrimitive on September 14, 2012, 01:03:12 pm

Yesterday I finished up a Hickory bow that I am particularly happy with. It has just enough character to be interesting but still has clean lines and great finish work. Its 66" long and 66# @ 28" chocolate deer leather grip & walnut tips. the top and bottom tips are different to accommodate a knot in the lower tip. I did some gentle heat treating on the belly, but not enough to scorch it. just wanted to share it with you! thanks- Ryan

Real nice Ryan.  Classic tiller.  I love the character on the back of a nice hickory stave.

Yup, great bow, clean and cool. 66# I'll bet that packs a punch.

Another twisted beauty!  Need to get my hands on some hickory staves, i've only been able to do hickory boards so far, though i'm loving my hackberry and elm staves.  Love the natural look to it.

Keep posting pics of bows like this one and people on here are gonna start thinking that you know what you are doing!

I've said it enough times, but these simple-straight forward bows must be tillered perfectly.  There is just no character to hide any tillering errors.  In that way, a simple bow like this is a difficult bow to produce.  Once again, you nailed it but good.

Really nice! Elegant lines like that made me think it was one of GMC's bows for a second.

Really nice job! ;)

Tell me how you gently heat treat without scorching. I got a white oak molle that is to that point and as much as I would like to heat treat, the oak is so pretty, I would rather not scorch it.

Really nice job. Good weight too, wish I could get that out of a hickory flatbow. :embarassed:

Very nice Hickory bow! I am not the biggest fan of hickory but that beauty is definitely tempting me to try again :)

Excellent work as usual!  I am a huge fan of hickory and that one looks like it will last you through a mile of bow strings.

Real nice looking hickory bow Ryan. You just know by looking at it that it will take down anything worth hunting.
