Title: 'Wingbone' a turkey bow
Post by: Badly Bent on September 02, 2012, 03:17:03 pm
Been a few hackberry bows on lately and heres another. Made this for my brother Steve as a gift on his 50th b-day. Steve loves to try and put a stalk on turkeys even if it means leaving his deer stand to pursue em'. Now two seasons ago him and I were leaving our stands
one early oct. morning on a trail out when he whispered turkeys. They crossed the trail ahead of us and went down the woods headed for the bottom of a draw. As they worked their way along the wooded side hill parallel to us I took a shot and missed. they backed off but
wanted to continue on that path. Well I went down in the woods with them to see if I could push em' back up to him on the edge of the woods. Three missed shots later by me and they hit the edge on the run. One hit the clearing running dead away from Steve at about
20 yds and he put an arrow right through the back and dropped it. His first turkey and an incredible running shot to boot, best thing
i've seen while hunting. 22 yrs of bow hunting and I'm still looking for my 1st turkey but man I was thrilled to see him get that one.

He used one of my old longbows to kill that turkey but now he's ready for one with a selfbow, and maybe a deer or two to boot.

Hackberry selfbow, 62" ntn, 57# @ 28", deerskin grip with a feather from his kill. Wish him luck this season, thanks for looking.
Greg

Thanks for the compliments guys, I appreciate it. Eastman, the stain is combo of black leather dye, ground charcoal and acrylic paint.

Thanks again guys for the kind words. Sorry raghorn but he shot his turkey right handed, he'll shoot either way. He's actually right handed but left eye dominant so he's been shooting a little left handed lately,he swears he can miss from both sides equally as well.

Greg, that is a sweet bow.  Your finish work always stands out to me.  Another stunning meat making machine.  Hope your lucky bro brings some winged ones down with that one.

Thanks once again folks, it's nice to get these compliments on the bow from a group of such great bowyers. Since I started posting here a couple months ago everyone has been very friendly and outgoing, I really like this group and posting bows and getting feedback has been
as much fun as building em'.

I like it alot as well. I have a few pieces of hackberry in the shed I been eye ballin and you may have just made up my mind for me on which stave to start on next. I have yet to do one in hackberry but have one to floor tiller and it sure seems elastic. Has that been your experience too?
I realize that my next question can vary from tree to tree, but what type of dimensions in terms of belly thickness and fade width works for you with a 50-55#  hackberry bow at about 62" length?

Danny

Hey Danny I just measured my hackberry bow that is 62" and its 1 1/2"  wide at the fades & 1 3/8" mid limb width. Thickness is 3/4" at
fades to 5/8" at midlimb. This isn't the bow I have posted but its the sister stave to that one and looks nearly the same. The posted bow
that my brother has may be 1 5/8" wide at fades. I think many guys go wider with hackberry . I've only built four from hackberry and
the other two were about 1 3/8" wide bendy handles. Hackberry will be thicker in the limbs per pound of draw weight than you would
expect so I would start a little thick and work down. Hope this helps you.
