Title: Yew Longbow
Post by: Weylin on August 07, 2012, 08:54:31 pm
This is my latest bow. I got this one tillered out and shooting at the Oregon boywers gathering in Sisters with some help from Keenan and Gordon. I've been shooting it for a while now and I really like how it shoots, it's smooth, stable and hits pretty hard.

It is 67" ntn, 60# at 26" pacific yew harvested 30 years ago by my dad in the California coast range. The tips are ebony, the string is fast flight and the leather hand wrap is a strunk style. The lower limb had some natural deflex that makes it look a little weak but that's just how it wanted to be despite a few attempted corrections. It has a big knot in the upper limb that hasn't given me any trouble yet. There are lots of wind shakes along the belly but they have been harmless so far as well. I have one more stave from that 30 year old haul waiting to be made into a bow. This was the ugly stave, the other one is much cleaner. Here are some pics. Thanks for looking.

That bow looks great! Just one problem, though. You put the shelf on the wrong side.

Too cool you could finish that stave you dad harvested so long ago.  Great looking bow.

Mmmmm...creamy smoooooothness.

Careful where your pulling, your hand is too low on the string, which makes the tiller look a lil funny. But brace looks good, and the draw with an arrow looks good.

Beautiful bow Weylin. I like the character in her, the kinks and knot. Side and braced profile show the natural shape the tree must have had, I always like those details and that handle wrap is just perfect. Great bow.

Thank you for all of the kind words, it means alot coming from you folk. I sure do love working with yew, though my next project is tackling my first ever osage stave... we'll see how that goes.  ::)

Blackhawk, You're right I do seem to be holding the string a little low in that picture. A hazard of drawing without an arrow I guess.

Glad to see you get her posted up Weylin. I bet your dad never envisioned his son making a bow from that wood when he cut 30 years ago.  8)

I have had the pleasure of seeing this bow in the flesh several times now. The pics don't do it justice.  It shoots an arrow with some authority too.

Good looking bow. I like how you handled that knot.
It must have been cool working a stave that your father had cut down.
