Title: How is the tiller looking?
Post by: wvarcher on July 25, 2012, 07:46:27 pm
This bow is 72" TT and 1.25" wide to midlimb and then tapers to 3/8" nocks.  It's the same bow Tim Baker describes in TBB4.  "Your first wooden bow".  pulled to around 22".  Thanks for your help!

Looks great! You didn't say what your draw length is though. You can begin to take some wood mid  limb on to the nocks.  Don't forget to round the edges. Keep up the good work. Jawge

George, prolly going to tiller it out to 28".  My draw length is 27".  I should mention that the limbs start to taper right at midlimb to 3/8" nocks.  So,you think the tiller should be more elliptical?

Are you working with a short string (full brace height)? You should be, by now.
What's the drawweight currently at? Is it red oak?

If the limbs have a parallel width from the fade up to midlimb, you'll need to get that midlimb bending some more. I agree with George that you should take some wood midlimb on to the nocks. Both limbs bend very equally, which is a good thing! Take is slow now, only scraper, file and sandpaper from this point onwards.

6" brace in the pic.  Not sure if the wood is hickory or sugar maple.  I did heat treat this one after i floor tillered it.  That's helped a lot with set.  Wanna end up with no less than 50@ 27".  draw weight at 22" was 42lb.

wv, it is already elliptical. I was thinking of getting more wood working mid limb to nocks. That would make it more rounded. The tips do appear thick. I'd see how it looked as I proceed  in draw length. I'd be using a scraper now. All this is just a suggestion as I sit in my recliner LOL.  It is tough to assess a tiller from here because we don't see the limbs bending and returning. Take your time and trust your instincts regarding wood removal. But that is what I do when I make bows of this type. Check this out.

George,i was looking at that build-a-long yesterday!!  :)  That last pic on your tiller tree is great.  finally got around to narrowing and thinning the tips and rounding the corners.  removed some wood with sandpaper 6" above and below the midlimbs.  i heat treated the 5" handle last knight so i can't bend anything for a couple days until the handle takes on some moisture :(

Both middle third look stiffer than it should be.

Tiller looks nice and even...but how can people judge if its tillered right with no profile picture? If its a pyramid front profile then it looks spot on to me;-)

Cheers

You see my wheel bow!  I'm busted!  Was hoping nobody would notice that.  I narrowed the tips and removed wood from the mid limbs.  can't wait to put another pic up.  don't want to brace it now because i heat treated the handle yesterday.

Back at it.  Don't know what happened to the pic above.  Here is a another pic.  I narrowed the tips and removed wood from the mid limbs.
