Dunno if this is really the right place to post but it seems appropriate.
I'm working on the sculpture in Yew to show the flow and movement of drawing a primitive bow.
The bow(s) are Yew pyramids, 8" long, haven't strung 'em yet ;D
When it's finished I'm hoping to enter in a big exhibition next year.
I did sketches and a cardboard model first, and I've taken a lot of trouble with the low hand position so it would actually all work with the bow strung and an arrow.
I'm sort of trying to capture the cave painting feel in 3D with added movement.
Hope you like him.

That is very nice indeed. Would be happy to have that on the mantle. Actually an ornament i would be interested in for a change!

Very cool stuff Del.

That is awesome Del! nice work
-
Man that's awesome! I know there's not enough space but it would be neat to have one more position, braced but not drawn. Than it would be like stop motion film. Way cool Del.

Ha! That's exactly what I'd planned! ;D
But once I'd made the cardboard model I could see it would end up looking like the goddess Shiva with loads of arms.
There is still some detailed work, like do I put the arrow into the low position too? There's also the possibility of adding maybe just one extra arm or one more bow, it doesn't necessarilly have to all add up. That's why some of it is just taped on at the moment.
It's good how viewing it at different angles gives some interesting effects.

I like it!!!

Super nice work! It's impressive how you've given a sense of motion to a stationary object. Great job!
-
Awesome Del! I think you captured the motion perfectly. Does it stand balanced by itself or will you have to fasten it somehow to it's base?
-
It'll probably be on a chunk of Yew or a rock when it's finished.
I'll post a pic when it's finally finished, that'll be next weekend some time I expect.
I've shortened the arms a whisker and increased the curve on the full draw bow, the right foot needs some work as he's off balance at the moment, he's s'posed to be aiming slightly down as if aiming at a hog about 20 yards away ;D.
It's looking better and better as I'm cleaning up the details and improving the finish.

Maybe that'll be the next sculpture. Little wooden man says he wants a bigger bow for that ;D

Thats Awesome!!

That is very cool, Del. Except for finish work I'd leave it just like it is. To me it gives the full story. 8)

Very neat Del,and unique. God Bless

Del, that's beautiful! Quite a masterpiece. Jawge

Brilliant, just brilliant.....as with most exceptional art pieces I can slap my self for not getting that idea first:-)
Cheers

Cheers guys, I'm really pleased it meets with the approval of those who really know what it's about.
I've just about got it finished, I dare not sand it too much as it's V fiddly, so I quit at 240 grit.
I've just applied Danish oil with a small artists brush (it belong to Toulouse Lautrec ;D ) and it's reall brought out the colour :). By next year it will have darkened a shade too.
I'll post a finished pic on Thurs with any luck.

Looks like a fun project !!
Good work !!!

Does this little guy have a name yet? If not, I'd like to suggest he be called "ARCHIE"! A replica of this guy could be commissioned as a mantle top award for high levels of accomplishment in Traditional Archery and Bow Making kinda like the Oscar's and Tony's of that more violent sport called Entertainment! We could establish an International Academy of Traditional Archery or some such thing...

Here is the finished article an the original sketch. I had a block of Oak which I sliced for the base I think it looks a bit like a rocky outcrop.

Thanks sooooo much for that comment, it really sums up what the piece is about.
I may even need to quote that!

Very nice, Del. As you look at the figure, you just knows me means Toulouse that arrow.
I like the idea of giving out "Archies" at a redcarpet event...but it would be like herding cats. We PA's are a pretty independant crowd. Half the crowd would be wearing duct tape and camo tuxedos, the other half shirtless with bib overalls.

That is pretty darn awesome. Your effort and attention to detail in that work show strong.
