Title: Black Walnut Sapling Bow
Post by: Badly Bent on July 08, 2012, 02:53:42 pm
Heres a bow I made a couple years ago. Black walnut sapling approx. 1 1/2" wide, stripped bark, roughed in bow and clamped on bench to dry in natural deflex/reflex shape that sapling already had. About 5 weeks later tried to dry heat more reflex into outer limbs and tillered. Cracked belly side of levers when trying to heat reflex in, patched cracks with rawhide and sinew wraps. Has kind of a wonky unbraced profile and tips/outer limbs are a little wide and heavy but is a pretty accurate bow and shoots fairly nice. Longest bow i've made at 64" , approx. 53# @ 26", deerskin handle wrap, beaver fur at arrow pass, dyed and spar varnished finish. Thanks for look'n.

Another nice looking bow.  Good save with the sinew wrap.  I have a couple that I shoot often that have one of those "wonky" things going on... good word :D.  Tell me about the puff of fur around the arrow pass.  How does that work?  I have never seen that before.  You have me looking everywhere for some black walnut trees! I bet that one is a great shooter.

Thanks for the nice comments guys.
Yes Blackhawk it is smooth drawing at the long length and I can easily shoot it all day.
Howard I put the beaver fur at the arrow pass to quiet my arrows, I hunted with this bow a couple years ago and the two fletch arrows I was shooting seemed noisy until I added the fur. Also seemed to get perfect arrow flight out of those arrows after that. Sent a broadhead completely through a mature does ribcage and into the leaves behind her and she never knew it was coming. Not a real fast bow either but good arrow flight does wonders.
