Title: New to Selfbow Building
Post by: hunter255 on July 04, 2012, 11:09:53 am
This is my first attempt building a selfbow. I have built bamboo backed, Board bows, Laminated bows but the selfbow is by far the most challenging to build. Here are a couple of photo's of the stave and rings. Please let me know which ring i should chase. I appreciate the help.   Thank you Steve

All of those rings look good to me.  That looks like a fine piece of osage.  Good luck with it.

Pick one and go for it.....they look good.  Just be very careful around knots.  Use a scraper there.  You will get they hang of it with the drawknife.  Take your time and don't be in a rush.

Yep.  They are all pretty similar looking.  Scrape away the top ring from end to end for practice.  Then the next one the same, and so on.  Stop at the point where you have one continuous ring, unviolated end to end.  Looks like a really good stave!

The same rules apply - even thickness and width tapers :) Easy.........

I'd go to the first clean ring you can get to.

That is a nice consistent stave from the looks of the end shown. I agree with everyone else that you could take your pick but if the stave is deep enough I'd shoot for what looks like the 5th late wood ring, the one just under the marks that look like dots in the pic. That choice might change depending on what the view from the sides and the other end look like.

Thanks Everybody. I stripped the bark off. Now go down a ring for practice.
