Title: Is this tiller ok?

Hi Guys,

i've been carving on a piece of spindlewood lately (Eonymus europeus).
Unfortunately i discovered a tiny crack in the back of the bow after about 100 shots. I tried fixing it with 3 layers of cloth (hope thats the right word..). Starting with a small piece, bigger piece, biggest piece then hemp windings over it. Before i sanded out the crack, in this place the upper anual ring ist totaly removed in an area of about 3x4mm. Only lots of shooting will tell if the fixing was succesfully.

If the tiller is ok i will finish this bow an spend her a handle wrap.... and always be afraid it explodes at full draw ;)

A sinew, flax fiber, or linen cloth patch will hold that together paired with sinew or linen thread wrapped around in and soaked in a good glue. What is the draw weight?

I put 3 layers of linen cloth on it, wraped it with hemp, soaked with waterproof white glue (every layer).
Draw weight is 42#@28", propably drops a little after sanding/finishing.

Well if the tiller is ok, i am gonna finish this one the next days ;)
Still afraid it might explode....

Spindle is such amazing bow wood but mighty hard to find around here.
I personally would have used rawhide but it should hold ok. Your patch is all that needed as long as it's well glued on well - wrapping as well is probably unnecessary.
The unstrung picture tells you all you need to know about your tiller. ;)

IMHO wrapping a tension crack, in addition to a patch, does help.  Wrapping wont' help compression fractures, but a sinew, or linen wrap soaked in hid glue will hold splinters down.

New Indian, there is enough usable wood, thats right, but an exploding bow could hurt the archer... :o

Hi Mickeswick,

in my area I can find enough usable Spindle, lucky me, still hundrededs of plants produce oly one nice stave. I chose linen cloth because it doenst strech (much).
I am not jet experienced enough to judge the tiller with help of an unstrung picture  :-\ but in my eyes this tiller looks fine. I know you guys over there are way more experienced thats why I asked.
