Title: Pre-formed by nature setback, recurve bow in the works.
Post by: dwardo on June 22, 2012, 05:24:02 pm
Got lucky with this one but it aint a bow yet.
The profile of this stave is all natural bar a little limb twist that i have heated out.
It has a whopping reflex and recurve at the tips so its hard work keeping it on the board. The
stave was gifted me from a good friend who likes to give me a challange. It was fast heading towards the firewood side of the pile due to twist and and lots of black damage/recovery wood.
Roughed it out to floor tiller and it is incredibly heavy in the hand for its mass. Who knows how it will go but its a nice free bit of natures work to start with which doesnt happen often
oops its elm, smoothleaf UK only ever triedf wych elm 62ntn

Hope you post up your progress on that one, I've worked a couple staves that looked like that before and somehow managed to get to much bend concentrated at mid limb. Never really happy with those two and didn't even finish them out, sent them to the corner to punish em.

Staves like that are nice. I go and search them out specifically. They never catch your eye like the pipe straight ones do when your walking around in the woods. I have 2 hackberrys and one mulberry with way more set back in the handle than that. I have been meaning to make a thread just to show them off! :) I bet it will make a really cool bow when your done, (especially if you flip or even recurve the tips!  ;D).

I have the fades working a little now and just need to even them up.
I think I will flip the tips some and then try and reign in the outer third.
If anyone has any ideas please chime in.
