Now that I'm a paid advertiser I wanted to let ya'll know that I released the world's first full length hunting DVD using only the primitive bow and arrow! It's called Primitive Instinct, Volume 1 and It's available for $22.45 (this includes domestic shipping) from my website: www.primitivepathways.com (http://www.primitivepathways.com). This DVD took 4 1/2 years to film and produce. I did ALL the filming including all but two of the kills. I also did all the editing, narration, cover design and write up on the cover. Those of you who've seen my YouTube videos or read my articles know I don't produce garbage.
In this DVD you'll see me take large and small game with my primitive bow and stone tipped cane arrows. I shoot a rabbit at 40 yards but also shoot deer at 6 yards. I also have a segment showing the construction of the entire bow and arrow, from collecting the materials, to drying the stave and shafts, and then shaping and tillering. I collect rivercane and make arrows out of it, I find flint and chip it into arrow points and then assemble it all. Then I go hunting with it!
I've posted some trailers on YouTube and have included the links below. You'll see that this is no thrown-together garage video. It took a tremendous amount of time to make because I Wanted to make it right. There are 7 kills on this video and I've gotten rave reviews from people who have ordered it. IT is 91 minutes long, so it's basically the same length as a Hollywood movie....but a whole lot better!! :D :D :D
Trailer 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpKR6HsSwWk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpKR6HsSwWk)
Trailer 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GS1XzkY0WGs&feature=relmfu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GS1XzkY0WGs&feature=relmfu)
Teaser Clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jddf-fPcnf0&feature=relmfu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jddf-fPcnf0&feature=relmfu)
Any of you who enjoy shooting the primitive bow and want to see what these weapons are capable of in REAL hunting scenarios, here's your chance. You'll get to see the hunts and kills as though you were right there with me looking over my shoulder. For those of you who order the DVD or have already seen it, I also welcome any feedback because I am already filming for Volume 2. And Volume 2 is already looking like it will be better than Volume 1. It has some incredible kills (including a 10-point buck that I shot right through the heart and yes.....I filmed that on my own too). I hope you enjoy the trailers...

Oh Billy, why did you put the "viewer discretion" label on. It is hunting and reality, nothing graphic about it. Graphic is all these filthy video games the kids are playing today. 8)
Sounds like a great video.

I don't post on here much if any,but im on here all the time looking at the great bows. Ya'll need to get a copy of billy's dvd and watch it, its great. Its all primative hunting gear and fun to watch.I purchaced a copy at the NG nap in ,its cool stuff.
-
Let me know if ya need some good comedy footage....I'm usually good for some log trips....bank falls... arrow rattlin...sleeping as the deer goes by etc.... ::)
-
I put the "Graphic Content" label on it because I Wanted people to know that it shows animals being shot and killed with a primitive bow. It also shows me in the beginning stages of skinning a deer with a stone knife, and some people get a little grossed out by that. You know how people are these days...they'll complain about ANYTHING.... I wouldn't be surprised if there are people who complain to the homeowners association that flowers are blooming in their yard. That's how ridiculous it's gotten nowadays. I just wanted to cover my butt a little bit and warn people right off the bat that it shows shooting and hunting and killing. But if you LIKE that kind of stuff...well.... then that warning label would instead look like a golden seal of approval for AWESOMENESS!! HAHAHA
-
Looks sweet billy ;) hope to order one soon
-
This does look sweet, Infact I just ordered it

That is actually what I thought of. I hate the shows that eliminate any blood or dead animals. I want to see it in slow motion so I can see just how good the shot was and how the arrow penetrated. ;)
-
Looks really well done, Billy. I'll have to make my way over to the site and order one!!
-
I hope you included the dragonfly hunting footage ;)
-
Well since I can't seem to harvest anything with my bows, I think I'll wander over to your site and at least enjoy someone else doing it. ;D
-
Well I just received Gordon and Mitchell's orders, along with a number of other people. I'm on my way to the post office right now to ship them out. You guys will also be receiving an e-mail from me confirming that they have been shipped. And yes, I did include some dragonfly hunting footage! ;) ;) ;)
I'm really excited to get these out, I can't wait for you guys to see the DVD! I also would like you guys to respond on here and give me your feedback, both good and bad. I want to know what you liked or didn't like and what you'd like to see in the next one.
Gotta run, gotta ship these DVD's out. Thanks guys for your orders I really appreciate it!
-
DVD's AWAY! I sent out a bunch of videos at the end of last week to those of you who ordered it so you should be receiving them very very soon if you haven't already. Keep me posted on when you guys receive them so I can be sure ya'll got them. I have to keep all my primitive archery friends! :)

looks like a must have video...will be placing order soon!

I watched the DVD the other night and ejoyed every moment of it. What I like about it is that it shows hunting as it really is - lot's of misses, blown opportunities and frustration with a sprinkling of some really fabulous successes. The 40 yard rabbit kill shot was unbelieavable. I'm so looking forward to Part 2. Now if we could get Billy into some elk...that would be fun to watch!
-
Gordon, I have been trying to entice billy to come back to oregon to hunt with me, maybe we just need to up the ante a little, maybe a pack in trip next year?
-
Just ordered the DVD! 8)

Hey Tracy and Auggie,
I just got your orders and will be shipping your DVD's out to you today. And Thanks Gordon for the feedback, I'm really glad you enjoyed the DVD. I wanted this to be something different, far from the typical hunting shows on TV or hunting DVD's (which are usually just the same boring shows regurgitated with a different label). I didn't push any products, advertise any services, or try to influence the viewers. I just wanted this to be a pure hunting adventure and a story that ya'll could be a part of and share. So I'm glad you all enjoyed it!
And yes Dave I would love to come out to Oregon and go on another elk hunt.....that would be awesome! I'm going on some wild pig hunts this summer and my video camera will be with me. I'm hoping to get some shots on some pigs and capture it on video so I can put it on Vol. 2. I'll let ya know how I do!
-
Gratz on getting your DVD out! Unfortunately I'm going to have to throw it on my birthday present list for the moment since I stumbled across your youtube videos a couple months ago and am now buying up everything I need to make bows and arrows. :) Thanks for getting me addicted to a fantastic hobby!
-
I just ordered it.
-
Got your order Kenny and I just packed up your DVD. It'll be going out tomorrow! :D :D :D

I finally got some TV time, this evening and got to watch Billy's DVD. Folks, if you haven't seen it I highly recommend it. Get yourself some popcorn and prepare for a treat. It was obvious to me how much work went in to making it. I know your Dad would be very proud.
-
I had a chance to watch the video a couple times now and like others, I highly recommend it to all outdoors people. Billy did a great job putting this together! It really reminds me of my own journey into primitive hunting.
The rabbit footage/shots were just awesome!
The fox squirrel shot still puzzles me.
The deer hunts were truly great.
For volume II: more knapping, more arrow work, and more knapping >:D
Tracy
Oh, and THANK YOU for not using the hardcore head banging metal music for the video!!
-
I too enjoyed this video very much.....I have a question for Billy. What was the tree that you made the out of? And also I thought the part with the hornets was very funny.
-
HEy Guys,
Thanks so much for the feedback and I'm really glad you guys liked it.
Tracy- Putting that cheesy heavy-metal crap music on this DVD was NOT going to happen. I've watched a lot of high-quality productions by Discovery Channel and BBC that I really liked (Ray Mears, Neil Oliver, and Dual Survival, among others) and I noticed something.....they never, EVER use head-banging music in their work. And it shows. Their quality is much better and much more professional than the crap that airs on Outdoor Channel and Pursuit Channel. So I copied the higher quality TV shows and did my best to NOT do what the hunting shows do. I look at those hunting shows now and I just roll my eyes because to me they are very amateur, unprofessional, and in my opinion embarrassing. What's so ridiculous is that EVERYBODY does it!!! All the hunting shows are the same, the format is the same, they use the same stupid music, and they constantly push their products. When I see that I go in the opposite direction. And a lot of my friends can't stand to watch those hunting shows anymore either. I don't do any flashy graphics, advertise any products, or push any agenda. I just want to produce something that's entertaining and real without any advertisers pulling my strings and telling me what to do. So I'm glad you saw that and recognized it.
James- I made the bow out of Osage. I just wanted to show the process of making a bow and not get bogged down in details. You have to be ruthless sometimes in what you cut and edit because it is very easy to lose your focus and start going down all kinds of rabbit holes. I wanted to show a brief overview of how the bow is made to give the viewers a glimpse into what goes into making a bow, and then get right back to hunting. I have plans on making more DVD's that are instructional, and those will be much more detailed and specific.
Thanks again guys for your questions and feedback....
-
Looks really cool. It when have been neat in the second trailer to have an airplane flying and then "morph" into the eagle that was filmed, the whole modern to primitive theme. Anyway, I think I'll buy it. Keep up this style of hunting, we owe it to ourselves and brothers living in the woods.
-
Just stumbled across this billy, watched those utubes and think i'll send ya a check. Look forward to seeing you in action.
-
HEy Paul,
Got your order today and I have one copy of the DVD packed up and ready to send out tomorrow. I really think you'll like it!!
-
Just watched it for the second time Billy, this is an awesome production! Can't wait for number two! Very inspiring!
I love the bow making part, do you always cut your feathers rather than pull them apart? Is it just as good?
-
Thanks for the reply Billy.
Tracy
-
HEy Arrows,
Yes, I prefer to split my feathers in half instead of pulling them apart. You can pull turkey wing feathers apart but the quill that is removed is so thin and weak that I've had the quill break when the arrows are dragged through the brush during the rigors of hunting. SPlitting the quill and then sanding it down a little bit still retains the inner pith of the quill and more of the main quill, making a much stronger fletch that can withstand the abuse that arrows undergo when hunting.....
-
Great DVD Billy! But I now question your common sense. Throwin rocks at a hornets nest? I hate em too,but thats a fight I don't want. Hope your next is ready soon!
-
I haven't heard from Cowboy....I just wanted to get his feedback on the DVD and whether he liked it or not. Anyone talked to him lately? Where you at Cowboy??? ;D ;D ;D
-
Am still here, haven't figured out this dvd player yet. lol..
-
Billy: The Wicki family sat down and enjoyed your DVD. Can't wait for the next one! Very well done, sir. Like everything about it. It also took me a few years for my first bow whitetail. When I ditched the compound 20 years ago and went straight to my selfbow, my luck changed. :)
-
Will be ordering my copy very soon.Sounds great...
