Never seen a tree ooze sap that wasn't a pine or maple so I'm confused. Here's a pic of the leaves.

A pic of the bark

Last pic of the sap

black cherry.
seems I've read that cherry sap is not useful for pitch as it's not resinous.....
going by memory on that though so take it with a grain of salt.
-
All the cherry trees that I've found have been smooth barked and have the distinctive horizontal slashes.
-
Here's another plant I found
-
The tree is definately black cherry (Prunus serotina).
The plant is one of the milk weeds. Possibly Asclepias syriaca.
-
being a plant man of some sort sounds good to me Pat.
-
Thanks for all the info guys its much appreciated.

I love them Ben and live where there are probably more plant varieties than anywhere else in the US. Here in the Southern Appalacians we have both Northern and Southern varieties. My wife and I have found 7 or 8 varieties of orchids here on our 25 acres.

I seem to remember from somewhere that you can use the plant fibers from milkweed for rope or string or something. Am I correct or just being hopeful?
-
You are correct about the string.
Milkweed makes a super strong string. Good bow strings.
It is hard, well more time consuming that hard, to make a good string from it.
Leave it alone until the frost kills it. A day or two later cut them and lay them out to dry.
It will take a while for them to dry. Once they are dry the fibers have to separated from the main stem and the outer bark has to be removed from the fibers. Most time consuming.
ALL of the outer bark has to be removed. After all that is completed making the string is quite easy. :D Cut lots of stems. You will most likely need them for practice. ;D
