Title: Some primitive bows from Africa
Post by: coaster500 on June 06, 2012, 04:56:31 pm
I just got back from a hunt in Africa. While I was there I took some pictures of bows my host had on his dinning room wall. We seem to be in awe of the dressing but here are some real tools of the bush...

Looks awesome very different from our style of selfbows are those bowstrings supposed to be that far from the tip, or is it just unbraced?
Ever got the chance to test them :D?

I think the bow at the bottom is the only one Lammie said was braced and shot...  the rest have been decoration for a long time

I'd like to know what type of wood it is that they make those round cross section bend through the handle bows from.  Was there a good explanation in that African archery chapter of TBB?  Dunno...

Not sure of wood types Parnell ... most of these were gifted to Lammie.  I wish he had known??

Mullet, don't think its a point but with the covering I could be wrong???

Pappy I had a great time and took Impala, Nyala, Blesbok and a Red Duiker!! The Duiker was the real suprise of the trip. Lammie my PH said it was a first for him to have a longbow hunter take one. I his words "do you understand what just happened? This is something that is more sought after than a Kudu" and the list went on!!! I was extremely fortunate, right place right time and pulled off the shot....  Sorry to say I did not hunt with a bow that I built as my confidence level is not quite to that stag and this hunt was 8 years in the planning. I will go back some day with one of my own and hunt Bush Pig and the warthog that eluded me this trip :)
