I posted this on Life is good but for those that don't go there, here ya go.We cut this, this passed weekend,it was 29 inches across the stump and got 3 75 inch logs and several smaller ones.We estimate it will make about 75 to 80 bow staves,it was about as clean and sraight on the first 2 logs as I have seen. The bark as you can see peels very good this time of year. Got the ends sealed and 2 coats of poly on the back as well as sprayed for bugs, you don't always have to do that with white wood but it is good insurance and not worth taking the chance. :) :)

Now thats a load of lumber. Nice work!

Looks like you guys are set for hickory for a while. Nice job on the processing too. Never Harvested hickory but the bark poping on em like that sure makes the processing sooo much easier than having to drawknife it. Congrats. Danny

Nice haul Pappy. Looks like you had a fine crew helping you.

Ya had BigA ,GregB ,Jon and myself most of the day Saturday,Will,Allen and Jimmy came in on the short end but were well recived,we were worn out by noon Saturday and the extra help was really nice. Sidewinder maybe 2 years depending on how many scouts and such we do.It usually takes 30 to 40 for the Classic. We really need to cut somemore but after Saturday they want me to look for some smaller trees. ;) ;D ;D ;D

That is a lot of hickory! Nice work. Ive never cut a hickory that big myself, I tend to stick to the smaller trees. Do the belly splits split off pretty clean?
-
I love hickory.....even in Ga...I keep it inside and work it then bring it right back in till finished...then seal..and its as good as osage....great haul there Pappy....fine stuff...gut

Boy, those big sheets of bark would sure make good roofing for a yurt or wigwam.....
-
Pappy, is that pignut?
-
Makes the little hickry tree I cut down this weekend look wimpy!! :-[
-
NICE Haul......I'm jealous.... Not much in the way of hickory in this part of Kansas :P
-
holy cow, what a blessing...you said that it might give you 75-80 bows BUT if you did some belly cuts maybe more...great work...and i am glad you had some help with it...john

Seriously if you boarded that and sold it in the UK you'd have a tidy amount! Prices are going up here and a 6 x 2 x 80 is around £70.00 or about $110....
Anyway GOOD HAUL :)

Thanks guys, yes it is pignut,it is defiantly worth more as staves than a log,the log sold to a logger would be worth $150.00 to $200.00 so I never sell Hickory to loggers. The bellies usually come off pretty clean, this one was a little tougher for some reason but we don't use it for bows, tried it but just to brittle for me so we use it to cook with. Don't wast much. ;) ;D

Wow! Thats a lot of Hickory! I have a tree about 12" in dia too close to the house. It may have to come down. When it does, I'll peel and seal.

Looks like a lot of hard work - great pictures!
-
Wow! That's a good day's work, Pappy. Nice haul! Just the firewood from the branches would probably heat my house next winter. :)
-
Nice haul Pappy. You've got a heck of a gang there at Twin Oaks! 8) My back went out on Saturday. Must have been in sympathy for you guys. ;)
-
Wow! That sure is an impressive hickory tree. Nice staves. Jawge

Thats a nice haul of hickory, Pappy. Thanks for posting the pics. Have you ever milled backs from a hickory log? I just came across some some nice pignut logs and I was experimenting with how to have them cut so as to get a good supply of backs for laminated bows. Any thoughts or experience in this? Also, I always thought that you wanted the log cut after a summer growth so that the summer wood is on top after peeling the bark. Is this the case? Thanks, Jon

This is why I miss Tennessee. Tons of Black Locust, Ash, Hickory , and Hedge Apple from where people started bringing it in, and now it grows wild all the way from Johnson City up to Butler and Mountain City. But now I live in the land of the pines.
Amazing haul.

Yes Sir Pappy!
Beauty of a Haul!
Shame I don't live closer, or own an aircraft, I'd love to come split wood with you. :)
