Title: stingray hide for bow handle

New to primitive archer , and wanted to know if anyone had any info on tanning a stingray hide

Welcome to PA rodeoj!! I've never tanned anything myself, but I do recall seeing some stingray being used as handle wraps. Maybe do a search.

Looks like the stingray hide will make a great bow grip and a matching pair of boots. Appreciate the reply thanks.

I used it for a handle wrap on one I made last year (the link to that thread is below).  The bow unfortunately didn't last long, but you can see another example anyway.  This skin was was bought, so I'm not sure how to go about tanning them.

 I've tanned a stingray and shark skin after they were caught. All I did was scrape the flesh off and dry it. After about three days there was no smell at all. When I used it I did it like rawhide or gator belly skin and soaked it in water and wrapped it after applying TB3 and then sewd it in place. It's like wrapping your handle with sand paper.

Thanks for the info. I've got the skins scraped and  in the freezer so I guess I will dry them and try to keep the dog away from it. Appreciate the reply I'll post some pics when I get it done.

Hey fellas!  I love stingray skins....My buddy has a pair of boots and they are cool!  The one in the pic looks like one of the ones like Big Jim sells, they're acid tanned and a bit thicker IMHO.  I like the rawhide ones (selftan/dry) like mullet is describing, thinner and easy to work with....B careful though, they can tear if you pull your stitching too tight..... :o

Hey Clint!  It was good to see you at the Classic....Malcolm and Bud beat me to those killer staves you had....Keep a good one for me next year!  How's the HHB coming along?

Eddie and Dave are right on.  Use them as rawhide.  They do not need to be tanned.
