Thought I would share my newest caul. I wanted a caul to do it all in one shot. This one will reflex, flip tips, straighten in any direction and can be used to temper. This particular bow is mulberry, I did my "Good Friday" osage bow on this caul and it turned out nice. This bow is 5" longer so the tips get more reflex. So far "Im lovin' it" like Mc Donalds....tm..... ;)

That's nice. I need to make one like that.
-
Consider it copied!! ;)
-
Nice form, Pearlie. Is your heat gun attached to a mic stand? Leave it to a drummer! ::)
-
All my cawls are 1/2 cawls, after the classic I decided to build full cawls like the one you posted.
-
Nice Drums!
How did you come up with that design???
-
Thanks for sharing that pearlie! I just made my first caul a few weeks ago following the design of Gary Davis on his rattlestick DVD. I haven't even finished a bow off it yet but I was thinking of making something along the lines of this with flipped tips. I'm just curious to see how that bow looks. Guess I'll do a search on it. Ok it was your Friday bow right not one of the two ya made on saturday right? Lol well thanks again I'll hopefully be making one similar soon.

Very nice, that should do a nice job. :)

Thanks for showing and sharing with us a new part to the Pearl Drums mass bow production assembly line ;)......take her down to marshall to so i can make a mock imitation of a pearlie production bow ;).....luv ya buddy :).....looks sweet n well crafted by a great craftsman 8)

4) drywall screws
1) 36" aluminum yard stick
1) pencil
I found my center and just flexed my ruler until I liked my reflex. Then added the flipped tips with a shorter bendy ruler. Its perfectly symmetrical as a result.

Its just too easy to get all your corrections and reflexing done in one heat on one full form Badger.

Thats a desk lamp stand I hi-jacked Pat...ssssshhhhh dont tell my wife where it went.......

Thats nice I have a couple also with a backing. Cut a top peices the same way to match the bottom. I put mine in while green cut it down to simi bow fourm. When you clamp the top to the bottom the bow between the too a lot more uniform. It's done with no heat.
-
Show off! jk, that's nice Chris, what's a brotha gotta do to get one of those? ;) Gonna grab some materials and do one up like that after school's out for sure. Glad i havn't done it yet, cuz now i get to make the "advanced" form instead of the intermediate ;D
-
Very nice! I see one in my future!
-
Looking like a real trusty setup there !
Nice one !
-
Now I like that Chris! Well done fella ;)
-
That is what I am going to model mine after. I have some 2 x 8" handy, and that is just the caul to base one on. Thanks for sharing.
-
For Charlie to view.

I'm on it! heading to lumber yard at lunch! I've done very little heat bending on my bows but am getting started on it so i have been thinking about this recently.
A more general question, I things will likely change from bow to bow, but as a rough estimate how long did it take to bend that bow pictured from start to finish?
One thing i struggle with as a new bender is if i am getting the wood hot enough. What i have bent stays put but i'm not sure if i could have gotten by with less heat?
-
Real nice Chris.
-
Awesome. Now all you have to do is trace it out on a long piece of butcher paper or something and send it to me....lol... That would be way to easy right? That is very slick Pearl. I see another form in the making already. Thanks man.
-
Thank you pearl drums. I'm making one tomorrow and now I don't have to search far.
-
Just use an aluminum yard stick and screws Charlie. It will flex evenly and give you a nice shape. I will take pics this weekend and show you what I mean exactly. Actual measurements arent any good at all. It doesnt have to match to the 1/8" to get a good caul made. Avoid numbers and keep it simple buddy!
-
Pearl Drums, Thats what I had in mind when I asked the questions earlier. The only thing I have'nt done is the part with the flipped tips. I still need to add the back splash to it for side to side stuff. Thanks for posting it. Its gonna help us more than you realize. Some of us are just too darn dense to visualize it by ourselves.
Clint, I stil haven't taken pics of the jig to hold the heat gun but will get to it soon, although I like the idea PD has if I could find something like it cuz I like its adjustability and swivel action. Mine is just 2x4's with a 2 1/2" hole but in it to hold the heat gun nozzle. Danny

Nice. I like the "heat gun on a stick". Smart idea.
-
blueprints stolen! ;D
-
Pearl,
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I can see one of these in my future.
If only you had gotten a little more of that light stand in the picture..........
-
Enjoy. Its nice to be able to reflex, straighten laterally and temper in one heat. I believe it to be better for the wood as well. This is just one of 5 or 6 I use. It depends on the style of the bow and the length. On this particular caul you dont have to flip the tips each time. You can stop the heat and clamps there and just have a straight reflexed blank.
Work smarter, not harder!
-
What is the term 'flipped tips"? Is that the curve at the ends, like a recurve?
-
Yes sir
-
The poor stave doesn't stand a chance with that set-up >:D
-
Genius! Ive been using a half caul. The whole lateral straightener idea at the same time is a real sharp bit of design! Thanks for sharing, I'm going to make one.
-
Is this how you did it Chris?

Winner-winner Chicken dinner! Take more pics and post that in the build alongs.............you will be appreciated muchly.
-
unfortunately I can't take any more pictures of the process it's already done as soon as I finish my stuffed peppers I'm going to start bending a bow. I could take measurements though, if people wanted
-
Well save that pic then. You will see the question pop up regularly. That pics says it all.
-
Thanks for posting this Chris. I have been messing around with a half size caul and ones that I have knocked together to either reflex or straighten a stave, and have ended up having to heat an area more than once, which has led to to weak spots and some broken bows. I am going to build me one like yours that will do it all in one heating.
I have a quick question about your heat gun. It looks just like the wagner that I just bought. How far do you typically keep the gun away from the surface you are heating and do you use the high or low setting? I've only used mine once so far and it looks like 25 bucks well spent.
-
Howard 3-4" on high when tempering. 6-8" on low for shaping.
-
Thanks for the advice. :)
-
Nice job.
