Title: A new bow for the Classic, hopefully
Post by: osage outlaw on April 17, 2012, 06:14:15 pm
Since I have my trade bow and a sinewed hickory bow basically finished, I thought I would try to get another one done to take to the Classic.  If it rains  ::) I want something to shoot that doesn't have a sinewed back.  I pulled out this bow that I roughed out last spring.  It had knot hole in the limb.  When I cut out the bow on the bandsaw, I was suprised to find this lodged in the back of the knot.

A bullet!  That is what caused the hole in the limb.  The tree had grown around it.  It was a major pain to chase a ring around it.  I left some of the early wood on it to be sanded off later.  Here is how the knot looks after I thinned the limb down.

This bow has thin rings to begin with.  The spring growth rings are thicker than I like.  The wood has a different feel to it than the other osage I have worked with.  It is not as dense and it feels kind of crumbly, if that makes any sense.  I have a bad feeling this bow will break once I start bending it.  I'll try to take it easy.  I would be happy with a 40 lb target bow out of it.  Anyway, today I used a ferriors rasp and worked on getting a good limb taper.  I got it to floor tiller.

The other limb has a big whoop-de-doo coming out of the fade.  I'm sure that will give me some trouble while tillering.  After I got it floor tillered, I heated some twist out of one limb and straightened the other to get the string lined up with the handle.  I'll let it sit for a couple of days.

I have two weeks to get this thing tillered and smoothed out.  I know for a few guys on here, two weeks is enough time for 3 or 4 bows.  Not me, I'm still trying to finish bows from last year  :P   I'll post updates as I go along.

OOOH!  what a cool piece of wood.  I would try to re-incorporate the bullet into the non-bending handle area... Like when you have it shaped dish out a recessed area in the handle and put the bullet back in it.  Good mojo with that.  :)

:-\ This looks pretty intimidating to me...

but I'm sure you know what you're doing. Good luck with this one!

Josh, I already thought of that.  I saved the part of the bullet that was stuck in the knot.  It is a pretty thin slice.

Jodocus, I have no clue what I'm doing

If thin enough would make a great arrow pass  8)

I've never heard of a bow getting shot before it ever had a string.  Pretty cool!  I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.  If the good Lords willing and the creek don't rise, maybe I can see it in person at the classic.  Slim chance, but a chance none the less.   Josh

That is really cool and will make a really unique bow.  I can't wait to see it when it's finished.

That's going to make an interesting bow and conversation piece :)

Going to be an easy one to name, maybe something like "Bullet"   >:D

I know the moment you saw the bullet lodged in the limb you were gonna take your best shot at it.  Maybe this one is named "Pat".  NO, not for Sasquatch Brennan!  For Pat Benetar...."Hit me with your best shot!"

The name Bullet has stuck with me ever since I cut it.  The tree this came from was growing next to a country road.  I guess it was a victim of a drive by.  Could have been from a poacher.

I filed in some rough nocks and put the long string on it.  I pulled it to 40 lbs and was pretty pleased with the bend.

That whoop de doo out of the fade is making it look funny.  I did some serious scraping and shortened the tillering string to a tight zero brace height.  It still looks decent.  I have a lot more scraping and bending to go.  I hope to get it to a low brace height by this evening.

I think I have it about tillered.  It ain't perfect, but I don't want to push it.  Turns out scraping is a good relief for stress and anger.

It is at a nice brace height.

#45 at 25" which should make a nice target bow.  The limb on the right is a tad stiffer and will be the bottom limb when she's done.

I've uncovered some nice red in the grain.  It's on the tip of one limb and the fade area of the other limb.

It has a hairline crack on the handle that goes into the fade.  I filled it with superglue.  Tomorrow it will go back to the chiropracter for one more little adjustment.  Then its time to smooth the edges.

Those blue squares have my eyes screwed up! It seems to look okay. the right limb just past the kiny fade 2-4" could bend a little more and give some relief to that kinky fade.

Right past the kinky fade is another kink in the oposite direction.  Right out of the fade it goes up then back down then straightens out.  I'll try to get a better picture of it tomorrow.  And I like my blue squares.   ;D

i agree with pearl, and i personally wood also loosen up the big hole area, you want it slightly stiff but not that stiff imho   i tillered a stave out thats exactly like that hole you have, and i got to slightly bend,it should take it. i have a pic of it somewhere but cant find i right now

OK, I'll say it. HOT DAMN!!  :o
I would have never gotten it to look this good.

PS: I like the blue squares myself. 8)

I'm nervous about it.  I might tinker with it a little bit after I straighten it up.

Thanks Bevan.  It took me a year to get the nerve up to start bending it.

Not to jinks you or anything but are you going to skin it with anything?

I think I'll let the natural beauty of it show.

Clint, that sounds like my approach on all my bows.    Looking good Clint, Bullet sounds like a great name however I did get a kick out of the Pat Benetar comment. Just something wrong when you have Pat Brenneman in mind and JW explains he was referring to Pat Benetar. Than the picture of Pat Brenneman belting out "Hit me with your best shot"    :o   Still trying to erase that image ::)

Staves like these are like those one kinda girls... Like,...    ...They're like that one chick that you just can never help but give in to and you love it, but at the same time you hate em as much as you love em!   ;D  Or that's how it is with me when I work a stave with a big kink or knot or other problem like that. Cool build along osage outlaw.

That is soooo good, you've just gotta make up some tall talefor the campfire about how your great grand pappy dodged that bullet in a gunfight and the tree became family folklaw until one day you saw it being felled etc.
Heck even I believe it already ::) ;D

Thanks guys  :)

I worked a little more on the areas suggested.  I don't want to go to far at the knot.  When I split this stave out, it didn't split even on each side of it.  So one side is wide and less thick, and the other side is narrow and thicker.  So far it seems about even.  It doesn't twist when I draw it.  I think I'm going to leave it alone.

Here is a better shot of the woop de doo fade.  I scraped some just past it.

Here is the crack that I filled with superglue outlined in pencil.  It seems to go into the bow at a 45 degree angle.

I exercised the bow and checked the tiller one more time.

I heated one limb and moved it just a little to line the string up on the handle.  I'll leave it until Tuesday, my next day off work.
