Title: Plains style Osage bow
Post by: Ryan_Gill_HuntPrimitive on April 13, 2012, 01:04:08 pm
It's no "replica" but it's of the plains style. I'm kinda outa my element doing this kinda bow, but I had a piece of wood that lent itself well to being a short bendy handle bow. I normally dont like colors on any of my bows..but this was an exception.  so like I said, certainly "out of the box" for my standard bow making.
its 48" long and 40# @ 23" draw  unbacked.  has some decorative sinew wraps, some pigments and some higher detailed pictographs I painted on.  All in all, I'm pretty happy with it and may do some more... but I like my old style the best still!  thanks for looking-  Ryan

Gorgeous artwork and detail on that one!  Wouldn't look out of place at all in the hands of a Native.  Very nice curves :D

I haven't seen an original that well decorated!  If you could get yourself a time machine that bow would be worth two wives and your choice of horses!

Twister:  My son was looking over my shoulder while on this site.  When I opened your post he said, "Kooooool.  Dad, you should do one like that!"

Really nice.  I'm into the shorties and your bow sure fits the bill.  I like a lot about it but, especially like the detail in your buffalo drawings.  I like how you "shaded" the chest forward portion.

Good on ya!

thanks a lot guys.  they seem pretty easy to build overall. I did this one in 1 day with just hand tools.  lol  just not as much wood to worry about when you lop a 3rd of it off..lol
I'm still not sold on the artwork.  I know it's not "period"  but if i was going to paint on it, i wanted it to stand out.  next time I think i wont do much for decorations.   I really despise decorations on my longer bows, but these shorties do lend themselves well to color

Fine job, TL. I like the color combo. It looks like you left the osage natural. Will it still darken over time even though it's been sealed?

yup, no way that i know of to keep osage from darkening...fine by me too, cuz i like it better as it ages

Cool little bow, always fun to work on projects unlike the normal stuff we do. I wonder if the Indians had bright blue? LOL.
