Title: Limb thickness, and tillering questions
Post by: Tortoise on April 07, 2012, 10:32:37 pm
Hi
A couple things:

1. I'm progressing ever so slowly on my first osage/hickory longbow. I'm trying to go for around #50-55. I don't know what the proper limb thickness (not width) is for this weight on a pyramid bow. Could someone please help me sort this out? The current stats of the bow are:

2. Also, should I tiller the bow with the limbs the way they are, or tiller it after I thin them? Thanks  ;) I just want to do it right the first time instead of dealing with the stress of an issue.

what is your front profile/ measurement's at fades and tips, will make a differance on finished thickness, Bub

Sorry I forgot to put that in there  :P The entire length is 72", the limbs are 31" at the end of each fade.

The back (and belly) is 2 1/2" wide across. The limbs are 3/4" thick at the moment with a 1/8" hickory backing strip. The tips are 1/2" wide. I'll add all this info to the original post as well.

most of my pyramid's are 66" ttt, one and three/quarters to two inches wide at the fades and i start with a limb thickness of 1/2" even thickness from fade to tip, 2 1/2" is really wide for osage and you might want to reduce the fade width to 1 3/4", at the present width it's gonna get real thin and you'll probablly end up side tillering anyhow, Bub

But 1/2" thick is good for what I have currently, right? Also could you tell me what side tillering is, I'm not sure

1/2" should be good to start, side tillering is when the scraping to drop #'s is done buy scraping from the side's of the bow, but i rarely do this myself, Bub
