Title: smooth sumac?
Post by: turtle on March 31, 2012, 01:24:25 am
Today while huntig mushrooms with my uncle we found where someone had thrown out brush they had cut.
It was cut into 4 to 6 foot sections neatly stacked. We loaded up the bed of my nissan almost level gor fire wood. Most of it was pretty small diameter but i saved out a 4 foot section 5 inch diameter on small end. I believe it is our local sumac which is smooth sumac. Apeared to be fresh cut so i peeled the bark split in half and sealed with shelac. My intension when dry is to use as billets and splice together. Just cant resist trying to make abow from it and wondered if anyone else has tried.

People have tried, and people have done it. That doesn't mean they were happy with the bow. Sumac takes a lot of set, it is like making a bow with willow or cottonwood.
