So after my divorce and selling of my house I am in the process of looking for another. With the lack of room now my work benches are in storage and I can only work on my bows when I get the opportunity to use a local school shop at nights. With warm weather hitting NH I figured I needed a way to hold a stave so that I could work outside on my bows... Here is what I came up with this weekend....

This was made out of 2x2 square tubing 1/4 thick... with a 10x10 1/4 thick steel plate on top.
I am no way shape or form a metal working machine but for about $60.00 and a weekend my brother who works in automotive repair helped me turn this cool tool out in a weekend... Now when I teach my bowhunter education courses i can bring some equipment to the class and show some of the students who continually ask me how I make my bows some of the steps... Maybe have some students get into bow making and hook a few more into this great craft... Hope you enjoy!!!

That is very cool! Great idea. I was trying to figure out how to have a vice with my ridgeline and that solves it. Thanks!!
-
Forgot to mentioin that when the vice is placed in the hitch there is a slight bit of play.... I just put two shims on each side which are on my bumper and the play is taken out.. I think I will add two washers to each side when my brother can weld them on and that will assist with the very little tilt when the vice is turned

I made one of those couple years ago. they are handy to have, id peel staves in the woods then you have alot less mess in the shop

That is outstanding! Jawge

That would be cool to take to a shoot

A wise man would fab up a detachable tiller tree............
-
Very Cool! you could mount a jack stand to the bottom to really stiffin it up for hogging off wood. The tiller tree idea sounds good 2 Pearlie ;) All in all what you made is AWESOME!!! Good job ;)
-
Thanks for that, it's much appreciated!
-
Nice! You could set on the tailgate with a cooler beside you and do some scrapin' 280 (?) horsepower shaving horse ;D
-
Tonight my brother stopped by to see how the whole thing worked out... I showed him the little play in it and he said we could fix that real quick... Out came the welder and some banding steel... about an hour later there is no play in the thing and it is tight as hell... will touch up the paint in the morning and grease where the vice goes into the reese.... then its time to chase a ring!!!

Awesome! now all I need is a truck... :-\

I got one real similar I put a cross piece at the bottom with a trailer tongue jack on each end to help with the jiggling around in the reciever just screw them down against the ground and it pretty steady. Ron

Man defines problem, devises plan, impliments plan, over comes problem.
Great stuff.

Thanks for all the kind words fellas... I have a travelling tillar tree that I already put against my garage post... So all I have to do is take the stave off the truck vice and turn around to the garage pole where my tillar tree is... My outside shop is under way 8)

I like it!!! ;)

That is outstanding! Jawge

Ingenious! I wonder if you could rig something like that up to the recliner >:D
-
Looks like it's all that chevy can do with that much weight on it.. :)
-
could be just as handy for someone who has a small shop and not enough room for a permanent bench.
I used to keep my box of handtools in my focus and at lunch, i'd go to a park, clamp a bow to the top rail of a fence and work on bows. i'd get some strange looks, but i'm used to that.
-
thats pretty nifty. I like the idea of the portable tiller tree too. Way to adapt and overcome. Danny

Like it. I filed the picture away for future reference. 8)

That will do it. Good job & thanks for sharing.

That's slicker than cow shot on a porcelain doorknob.
Now just beware of thieves.

When you mount a receiver hitch in front of the truck along with a winch, you are set-up for a power-tillering tree for building warbows!!!
