Title: Cane Arrows (by a Master Arrowsmith) (pics)
Post by: ber643 on August 16, 2007, 07:12:37 pm
Thought you folks might like to see some pics of some Cane arrows that Art Butner made for me. Trust me, these are works of "Art", no pun intended (well maybe a little  :)). I am so pleased with these fifteen arrows. I have made Cane arrows and love the way Canes shoot and hold up, but Art's put mine to shame in all aspects. Bless your heart, Art, and your skill and patience.

Three are "Hunters" with tied on fletching, and headed with his own handmade Trade BHs also.

These arrows are "Spot Seeking" buggers, as long as I do my part properly. They make me want to be better -  :)

They are great looking arrows.  Sometimes I wounder if my shooting would be better if I got someone who knows what they are doing to make me some.  :-X Justin

It probably couldn't hurt - unless one has the knack for it or really works at it. Most any of us can make shootable arrows and get a really good'un now and then - but guys like Art strive to make all of there arrows "Real Shooters" - or the don't become an arrow - IMO  :)

Very nice!I'm lucky to have a few Art made me.His arrows are so nice I told him I hated to shoot them. The next ones ,he wrote on them"for making meat only, not for display".I shot the first hog on the hunt with one in June.

You are a lucky man. I am also lucky to have a set Art made for me last year to use on a Colorado Elk hunt with Pat. Never got to loose one last year but test shot them recently and they are ready for the August 25th  elk opener. Truly a work of art and love. Thanks Art, and you have Elk steaks coming as soon as I connect.   Kenneth

I have the set Art made for my elk hunt with Kenneth plus a few others he made and gave me. Art knows the ins and outs of arrow making and executes it perfectly. I've learned a lot about arrow making in the few years that I've known Art. ;D
Bernie, welcome to our exclusive club! ;)        Pat

Thanks, Pat, I'm very pleased to be in it, for sure. I have lots of special arrows from special folks (including you, and Dano, etc.) but never a "set" of "shooters" like this. I'm blown away. (I did ask Art's permission to "show and tell" a little bit - LOL)

I have 4 from Art with (wood) selfnocks (one is a Japenese Bamboo). He asked me if I wanted these plastic or wood, and told me the selfnocks are fine for hunting but not for 3D or practice. I agreed that one wouldn't want to have others (or themself) destroying their selfnocks in subsequent shots - on purpose or by accident -  ;D

Thanks again, to all.

Here is the Japaneese Boo (with the selfnock) that was one of Art's personal "Shooters" that he gave  to me at ATAR in July.

Here is a couple close ups of the Trade Points:

and here is a close up of the little symbol that Art puts on most everything he hand makes. Those who are blessed with something he made, have probably seen it. He calls it "Stalking Man" and it adds a nice touch of primitive (and art). The bowman is kneeling and there are three little birds above the buck - neat, huh??? His nephew even copied it onto the back of his uncle's favorite cap for him:

I would be afraid to shoot them so nice. Of course if I had arra's that nice maybe I would the target once and awhile.

I also have some of Art's arrows, and a bow!  I've been fortunate enough to be one of his many apprentices since Pat B gave me his name at the ATAR shoot last summer.  As beautiful as all his work is, he makes it to be used.  In case you're reading this, thanks Art!

For those of you that don't know Bernie, well, he's rather special around these here parts. He puts in a lot of time and effort for the kids at our rendezvous (ATAR) each year so when he asked me to build him a set of cane arrows I jumped at the chance.  Just my way of showing my gratitude for all his hard work. Glad those worked out for you Bernie.

Kenneth..... yeah, haven't forgotton about those elk steaks ;)!

Eddie, way to go one that hog!!!! Hope my arrow is OK ;D!

Pat, a big hello from my bunch! We sure missed you this year at the rendezvous :'(!

Hi Danny, good to see you on-board. You making any shavings yet!-ART B

I just noticed on the trade points they appear to be shapened on one side only and on oposite sides.
Is there a reason for this??

Fix 'er up and send 'er back out Eddie! No danger in the air if'n there's no arrow in the air you know!

Dana, I use both the single or double bevel edges but I'm starting to prefer the single edge better these days. After reading Dy Ashby's report on single bevels I pretty much sold on the concept of greater penetration if bone is encountered. Notice the right hand bevel along with the right hand fletch. If I use a left hand bevel then I'll use a left fletch. Single beveled blades twist or rotate as they travel through a target unlike double beveled blades which plane true. Match the rotation of the arrow up with the blade's bevel and this supposedly creates a greater spiltting/separating effect of bone. Or something to that effect.-ART B

Thanks for the answer art, it never dawned on me that one bevel would affect rotation. I'm doing some trade points and
found its easier to sharpen just one side I would never have considered the spin factor.

Art is full of  pieces of (useful) wisdom and info like that and it rolls out of him so natural and unassumingly that no one ever feels like he is "talking down" - just sharing knowledge. He really is a great asset and well liked person to listen to, meet, and/or know. Thanks for the arrows and for the too kind comments, Art.

BTW - On a couple of other forums folks have asked about whether you sell and/or trade your arrows. I told them I couldn't answer that with any amount of assurance, but perhaps you or Pat B would be along with more definite info on that subject.

Eddie, Eddie, Eddie............... now don't make me have to send Jason down to see you for the purpose of stretching all your bows out LMAO :-*! Oh, did I tell you I give bonus points for using my arrows? E-mail me some stats. Never did repay you for those feathers.

Bernie, no, I don't sell any of my stuff but do occasionally trade.  Don't think I'll ever get caught up on all my "promised work". And getting slower by the day!

How did the shoot go yesterday? ART B

Thanks, Art. I didn't think so (now) but wasn't sure enough to answer them for you. Now I know what to say. Your arrows did much better than I did at Burlinton (Sissipaha) but I will improve!

There are a few folks who sell Cane shafting. In the current issue of primitive Archer there is a gent in Okinawa that wrote an article and offers shafts. You also could put in a search on e-bay. We have them in the lower parts of NC (growing wild) as they do in some other states. Some places are complettely devoid of any signs of them. I notice on your bio page it simply says overseas. Will you be "back" from there (as in military or civillian worker) or do you live there? If you will be coming back do you klnow what State/area you will be going to? i haven't (because i harvest my own) but you also might check or place request in the classified on forums like this and/or paleoplanet.net Hope this helps. Cane shafting is not always easy to find but it is available. If you make it to Southern, Coastal, NC I could help head you towards some perhaps.

Check out nurseries or plant stores for bamboo plant stakes, used to support plants. Some of them make excellent arrows and usually they are inexpensive.   Pat

I see your problem, wanbli. Here is the email addee of the chap who wrote the article on Japenese Cane Arrows in PA (untill you get your copy). He said he welcomes all inquiries regarding shafting materials he has. I think he has Cane, Boo, and Okinawa's equivilent to Sitka Spruce.

My pleasure. I spent two tours in Okinawa - but wouldn't you know I wasn't into Archery (and Cane & Boo) back then - LOL. I remember seeing it all over the place though.

Good! Let us know a little of what you find out. Nope - too old for anymore "tours" now. I retired from Marines in 1972 - LOL I'll be 72 years old in Oct - and still learning about making arrows, bows, and stone points - what fun! Just wish I had started younger.

LOL - that might work, Arne, but for now I guess I'll just harvest a few here (during the winter months, Nov. to Jan., as Pat B. suggests).

Yes indeed, bless his heart. I will have to wait for mine to age after I harvest them - but that's all right.

I'll do that, thank you. Maybe even some pics when I first harvest them also. I know when I first started looking, I was always interested to see pics of the raw Canes.
