Title: P.I.T.H. March 2012
Post by: gstoneberg on March 05, 2012, 02:42:09 am
Point in the Hat - March 2012:

Here's the list I have so far:

Tower -
Bubby - 2
Rileyconcrete -
Jimbob -
Mullet -
Sparrow -2
Iowabow -
Cowboy -
Bevan - 2
Lee Slikkers - 2
DLH -
Tracey F -
Nativenoobowyer86 - 2
Bowtarist -
Stringman -
Gstoneberg - 2

If there's not a number by your handle, it means that I either wasn't sure you had decided to join in the fun, or I didn't know what number of points to put there.  It would help me if you'd post here and clear that up.

This is gonna be fun.  I expect some good broken points on my shop floor before we're done.  Nothing like a little excitement to bring out the mis-hits. 8)  11 days till you know who you're chipping for.  Get your friends to sign up. :)

George

In the art world sometimes a group of artist get together and make a suite.  20 people 20 point.  We should do this sometime.

Done Paul.  It must be contagious, I broke one and got another one so badly out of symmetry that I gave up last night.  The one I broke was a beautiful root beer piece. :'(  I figured it would go downhill as soon as I had to make a couple.

Nah, the 15th is just the cut-off for signing up.  Here was my arbitrary rule on finishing the point....

Mail your point(s) to your recipient(s) by April 1, 2012.

There's no magic to that either, other than we don't want it to go on for months.  If that's too restrictive we can push it out.

This is the last day to get in the Point in the Hat (PITH) point trade.  The cut-off is midnight tonight.  We will draw names tomorrow morning if we have time, tomorrow evening for sure.  You will be sent (via PM - make sure your mailbox is not full) as many names as you put in points.  You'll need to PM that person(s) and get their address(es) to send your point(s) to.  Please send points as soon as you can so this doesn't drag on.  Also, please post pictures of the points you receive and who they're from.  Do your best, but don't sweat it if your skills are not equal to those of the person you are sending to.  (That's for my benefit as much as anybody else. :))  I've suggested April 1st as the cut-off date to have your points sent, let me know if that is an issue for anybody.  Above all else, have fun.

Wow, is building a table fun with this tool. :o  Give the table a quick once-over to be sure I gave you the same number of people as you said you'd make points and that your name shows up under other guys that many times.  I'm a little bleary eyed. Knap_123, I gave you one point and set you up to trade with me.  I hope that's OK.

I almost changed it to April 15th when I put out the list.   As long as you communicate your schedule with who you're sending to it's all good.

I tried to work on some of your coral raw tonight.  Goodness that's some hard rock. :o

Looks like I'm the first to get a point..or two.  Stringman was more than generous and sent two and a nice reply back to my PM.  Man, I have just sat and looked these babies over and over.  Mezmerized by the flake scars.  The grey one is so sharp it would take very little pressure to cut my finger and it's pointy as heck too.  Fellas, this site and you all are awesome. Thanks again Scott!!

  ;D ;D ;D dpgratz

Eddie, you're supposed to have it in the mail by the 1st.  ;)

I just got home from Twin Oaks and Cade's farm in SC. I had two nice points from Bubby, scarey thin and a great looking Hornstone hunting point from Tracy. I'll get some pictures up after I get unloaded. Thanks guys, they'll be in a special place in my case.

The first two are from Bubby, a fancy jasper and a nice, thin obsidian. The Indiana Hornstone was made by Tracy. The big Andice was not part of the PITH but gifted to me by WillH while I was in Tenn. They will all be in my best of the best case.

After looking through this thread, I gotta say you ALL do incredible work.  I've got to learn how to do that.  I'd love to go completely primitive and give up my modern heads.  Definately gonna spend some time in the knapping pit at twin oaks this year.
Title: Re: P.I.T.H. (Point in the hat)
Post by: Stringman on April 12, 2012, 06:53:52 pm
There is nothing more satisfying or frustrating than going primitve. The very reason mankind has evolved away from it is laziness. And it is that laziness that dilutes the pure emotion associated with true acchievement. Put simply: the amount of effort you put into something equals the reward you take away from something.

Having said that I dont mean to scare anyone away. Just prepare yourself for the  road you travel. Ask anyone who has walked that road before you and they will tell you it is the journey, not the destination!

Welcome to the addiction!!

Where do I start?
What part of the country you in? Finding a local person to sit with is priceless. Also get or make yourself some tools, and start breaking rock, glass. Whatever you can get your hands on. But pay attention to how the breaks and flakes are going. You learn by doing.
There are some good learning vids on youtube. That will help. Online sources for tools.
Ask questions of the guys that know what they are doing (Hint, I ain't one of them!!)

Those two are awesome.  Thats what I want to learn to do.  How long did it take you guys to get to this level?  Where do I start?
Oh, and sorry for the off topic.

Which level?  There are lots of levels represented here and we all learn at different rates.  I'm not convinced I'll ever do some of the quality points that are churned out here all the time.  I hope so but I'm not so sure.  Heck, I just whacked my thumb with the mallet doing indirect percussion a couple days ago so hard it brought tears to my eyes.  You'd think after this long I could at least hit close to where I want. ::) ::)

The important thing is to jump in and start working through the learning curve.  I've been at it almost exactly 11 months.  Bevan's right, sitting with somebody who knapps is huge and helped me a lot.  Can't wait to get more lessons this weekend.  At the end of the day you just have to break up about half a ton of rock to get the hang of it.  It sounds like a huge amount, but it happens a lot faster than you think, and at some point while doing it you'll begin to turn out points worthy of hafting up and launching at game.  One warning, it is horrifically addicting.  It has really cut back my bow building and I never thought that would happen.

And now, back to the PITH trade.  Great pictures guys. ;D

George

Sorry bonepile, I didn't get the chance to snap some pics, i was late so they basically went into the mail off the production line :P  The jasper point is a local variety called Taconite,  there is lots around but unfortunately is very fractured due to the harsh cold canadian winters.  The flake I made your point from was the largest solid flake we have spalled (Baldmoose and I).  Glad you like em :D

Not sure, Don. Looks like this is the right time for it though. Maybe start a new thread and see if there is any interest. I would be willing to throw a couple "in the hat."
