heres a fine specimen of pennsylvanian yew i got bent over tonight for ya guys. its also my first yew bow. my scale maxes out at 85 pounds, and its 85@26". the photo here is it being drawn to 30". so im guessing its at least 100@30". the bow is 71"ntn. i tried drawing it and im a wuss and cant get it all the way back to 30 yet. :-[...maybe my buddy rob(pahunter) can draw it and shoot it tomorrow when he comes over for another lesson...hes a strong lad. im extremely humbled and amazed and have the MOST respect for guys drawing and shooting these things....anyways here it is on the tree at 30"
-
Ok, a question 1st...do you EVER sleep Chris??? Sheesh, you mass production builders leaves me feeling so lazy and inadequate!!!
On to the bow...WOW, Blackhawk is in the house with a War Bow!!! Congrats buddy! Can't wait to see some pics of you at full draw with it >:D
-
Very nice strong. Bow there ;) If you decide to put tip overlays on it let me know and I can send you some mesquite or a wild. boar hoof.

Man that is a sweet bend you have there. But if that bad boy lets go your heat ducting is going to be toast for sure.LOL :o
-
Great looking Tiller! I have broke a few on the tree and I know one of them would have taken out that
duct for sure! Awesome bow!

Absolutely gorgeous bow, some day I would love to tiller an ELB.
Kyle Snow

also should mention at the arrow pass its 1 1/4 wide by 1 1/4"....yeeeesh
lee...you already know the answer to that question 8)...and thanks for the compliment, and it might be awhile before i can muster up the stregth required to pull it.
thanks cipriano...ill think about your offer..i just got wenge overlays on it right now and not sure if ill leave em or do something else to them...i still need to reduce the ends and tips down before i "try" to shoot it.
thanks keenan...oh i know...it crossed my mind and dont care if it does....i use to work hvac and its an easy fix if it goes ;D
thanks jboyd...yikes...i cant imagine one of these things going boom
thanks ksnow...it was fun to make n tiller, adn im sure one day youll get to feel the same thing ;)
-
that's an amazing bow, but as you can probably guess im a sucker for a yew warbow, if you ever want to get rid of it let me know >:D ;)
-
Now I'm just jealous! I don't like you anymore Blackhawk ! >:( ;) ;D. Of course , you could ease the animosity by sending that bow my way >:D. Seriously though, that is FREAKIN' AWESOME!!! Josh
-
That is a beautiful tiller. I dont figure ill ever build a bow that heavy. Ive built a few 70 pounders and they scare me more than enough.
-
It does not look like a blackhawk bow !
It causes me much pain just to look at it !
The only ting to go boom wood be me , so please keep it away from me !
Good job my friend !!
Guy
-
That is sweet I want to shot it I think I can lol I will send you my 96 pound at 28 to help you build up your mus lol you build some sweet bows I love it I am glad we meet take care my freind build more bows
-
Holy crap man that thing looks sweet!!! I mean really sweet! The tiller looks awesome! Heck ya I'll shot it!! As for being strong; yes I am but after 2 back surgeries I'm cautious as well. and If you think I'm strong you should see my brother, he has a good 50# on me and a few inches. I'm the "little" one. :) We'll let some wood soar tomorrow! ;D
-
Really nice tiller.
I'd have thought that at 71" long it may take some set if it's used at over 30" draw.
Mind I gotta admit I do love to see a bow working hard and making that nice full compass curve.
Great bow.
Keep doing the exercises! I managed to work up from 70 to 90# over two weeks of exercise, but it's the finger, shoulder and elbow joints which stop me going further. If I was 30 years younger I'd be be doing it (and drawing heavy bows ;))

Sweet, very nice bend you got going on,Love looking at it but that's as far as I go. ;) :) :)
Pappy
-
Now your getting me all antsy to start my yew bow. I want to shoot that sucka'! I bet it launches an arrow.
-
thanks noel..im gonna work on trying to get her back to full draw...if i cant ill consider it finding a new home ;)
thanks gun doc..lol  im sorry to hear im not your friend anymore :'( ;D
thanks okie...yeah i would be lying to say this doesnt scare me :D
thanks guy..lol ;)...ill bring it to marshall and shoot it standing next to you...i dont think your ole legs could run away fast enough ;)
thanks rob..yeah ill let ya yank on it...but ive given yo fair warning...discretion is advised ;) ;D
thanks del...the stave did have 3/4" of deflex to start with ,and atfer i unstrung it,it had 2" of follow...not bad considering the width ,length, and weight...yew rocks...now i know why you blokes like building these mostrosities with it. and i went full compass tiller because of its shorter length. ill keep exercising and trying to get her back...i wanna shoot this thing at its full potential so bad.
thanks pappy...sure ya dont wanna give her a whirl? ill take it to the classic for you to try ;)
pearl...glad i could stir up some fire in yewr belly ;)
-
Blackhawk, I just cut some yew from a house my son just bought here in Pa. I am not sure what I can do with it. The larger staves have a very low ring count, the smaller ones are better but still not what is considered good. What is your ring count like? I always hear elevation with yew, these I cut were around 2000 feet.
Your bow looks great.
-
Beautiful tiller, full compass yew ELB don't get any better than that! :)
-
Bob...this stuff was cut a mile from my house here, and the ring count on this one was about 35 rings per inch. some of the other staves i harvested were a lil lower around 25. but if i can get a full on deep n narrow elb(and on the short side) warbow out of it im sure you could make anything you could pull draw weight wise. my little experience with yew(this being my first yew bow) thinks that ring count isnt as finnicky as some folks make it out to be,unless you were going for super high weights..but im never going there. thanks for the kind words ;)
thanks for the great compliment eric ;)...i could stare at that full draw all day 8)
-
Ummmm nice :D
Come on dude a young chap like you should be able to pull that back!
Get cranking on it and give us a photo of proper full draw ;)
-
Thanks mike...lol...I thought I would've been able too...I used to be pretty strong back when I lifted weights and rock climbed...I used to be able to do a one arm pull up.....man I got weak...im gonna work on it...im sure my form ain't that great either...im getting stuck right on the hill 3" short :-[
-
That's a beauty for sure Blackhawk! Can't wait to see her finished AND that full draw pic! Maybe take a few sniffs of ammonia salts just before lift-off like the powerlifters do lol :o
-
Nice! That sould look pretty good once stained! ;)
-
Sweet looking bow porn there Blackhawk.
Don't settle for tip overlays, that thing needs horn nocks!
-
Thats lookin very nice blackhawk. Didn't know Pennsylvania had yew. Hey, your out in indiana, right? There were some pretty bad tornados out there today, I hope that yall are ok.
-
Really nice bow, impressive weight for such a short bow. How long did it take you to tiller, did you follow any set of dimensions for the bow or just tried to get the most from the stave.
-
Awesome looking bow. I also didn't know you had yew out your way. Love the arc to the tiller. I could send you some horn tips if you want to do the horn nocks on it eventually. We have piles of them around here ;)
Looking forward to seeing some pictures of actual people drawing the bow >:D
-
thanks k hat...not sure it will be anytime soon for a full draw...at least from me. i worked on pulling it a lil bit again tonight, and let my buddy rob try,and he couldnt get it back either >:D..now i dont feel so bad ;D
thanks monative...no staining yew...its already naturally beautiful wood with the sapwood and heartwood contrast
thanks bernal....maybe horn nocks...i dont know? i need to be able to pull it back first
thanks toomany...im in pennsylvania...it was from a big tree i got some staves from that was planted here loooong ago next to where there used to be an old farm house.
thanks ian...not sure how long it took me to tiller,i long stringed it one eve, then heat corrected it weds night, then finished it off thur eve. ....i didnt really follow any "set" dimensions,i took what the stave could give me. i think when i laid it out and faceted it,i tried using some similar dimensions to one of dels bows he posted with his widths and depths at several points along the bow. the stave didnt allow me the same width and is only 1 1/4",because this came from about a 2 1/2" dia branch top of a trunk.
thanks gaur....sure ill take some horn nocks if ya got em....as long as it isnt to costly to ship....how bout some horn bow belly cores too ;)...ill send ya a pm....im hoping either myself or finding someone to draw this thing for a real full draw.
-
Sweet looking yew yew have there ...send it to ff401 i think that is his starting weight >:D
-
i think i will have to agree with soy ;D ::) ;)
-
inspiring! Great looking bow. Love the clean, simple lines - and at 100# too. wow.
-
warbow 1, Rob 0 (though my pride may be a -1). God my back is still sore! I don't know how those guys do it. Time for another beer... But what really impressed me where your flight tests of another bow. I mean holy &#*$!! I'll let you tell that story. I'm letting my elm rest until Sunday but I'll be chasing that Osage ring again tomorrow! ;D ;D thanks for everything brother! Awesome lesson on heating / bending. I'll be gettin a heat gun tomorrow!! And bandaging my burnt finger. :( lol
-
thanks soy...i might have to if i get sick of being young n dumb again trying to pull my arms out of my sockets 8)
keep wishing noel..you never know ::) ;)
thanks danlaw
yeah rob..that thing kicked our rear... :-[ :-\....maybe its stronger than what i think it is,or our technique is all wrong...stumping n flight shooting was fun,and even in some rain and wind my elm bow shot better this time pushing ~ 230 yards....patience with the ring chasing and dont be so gun shy ;) find that sweet spot with the knife in the early growth and itll peel like a banana, well almost ;D
-
patience with the ring chasing and dont be so gun shy ;)
So I should go slower and faster, got it! ;) I guess that is kinda true it's just learning when to do each. Even though I'm strugging with the technique a bit, I found chasing the ring enjoyable. Almost calming to focus so intently on one thing. I think i like it!
not sure if you got my text but you'll have to hang on to my bow until next time. thanks!
-
My kinda bend for sure.
Gosh, my shoulder hurts just reading the post.
Well done.
-
keep wishing noel..you never know ::) ;)
wish, wish, wish, wish, wish
-
Good bend here man!
-
Very cool! I was going to ask how you pull it, but realized that this is the bow in pahunter's thread. Can't wait to see it finished!
-
Sure thing amigo ;)
