Title: dog names
Post by: n2huntn on February 25, 2012, 10:41:41 pm
My little terrier and best tracker died in October, broke my heart. I was finally able to walk into the shelter and maintain my composure.so today I adopted another terrier mix . Little boy . Brownish with a black face. He passed every temperment test and was cool around loud noises, even gunfire. Walked him in the woods and he showed a lot of drive. Walked back into the shelter and made the proper donation. I pick him up Monday. He's around 2 years old. I need suggestions on a name , preferably outdoors type. The shelter calls him Denver and my wife likes camo and jaeger.
What do ya'll think ?

Don't let the kids name it.  You might end up like me and have dogs named Princess and Sophie

Archimedes?  He looks pretty smart, might even be able to speak Greek.

The other name that came to mind looking at that wonderful mug of his is "Chuck".  He kinda looks like a Chuck to me.  Or Steve.

I like Chuck too, but with a relative name Chuck it seems kinda wrong to call the dog that.
Thanks for all the replies. Sorry bout your lil bud Bubby.

When naming my dogs in the past I went this a weather theme (my German Shorthair was a whirlwind in the house) so I have went with:

Storm, Thunder, Rayne, Storm II Skye

And for all my hawks I usually end up going right to Mythological names for some reason...

How about Orion, was noted as a great huntsman/hunter?

Was taught to name outside/hunting dogs something short that could be hollered without
mangling the sound of the name. Held true to that til I started using a whistle.

Nice looking pup. Looks like a Willie to me.

I agree w/ these guys.  Jaeger is good.  My four year old said "PAW", and my 7 year old said "Barley".  ;D  My old dog names, all girls though, Kyt, Ebba Hedwig, Dottie, Ka-zie-a, and now Nala.  All killers in their own minds. I had a stray I named Kevin one time in college too.  ;D

Looking again, he looks like a one sylable name kinda dog IMO. dpgratz

A friend of mine once had a dog named Barley, big ol' yeller lab.  He was the definition of a good dog.  Subsequently the old barn cat was named Hops.  I guess both could be counted on to follow along you were doing chores no matter the weather.  They once joked they should get a parakeet and name it Yeast.

Yeah, Barley would be a good name.  But honestly I don't think it matters what you call that dog, cuz he looks sharp...he'll know what you want him before you do!

Seems like when we give a dog a name they end up being called something else all the time anyway.  'cept for Louie.  Good 'ole Lou or Louie.

You could name him Shaft.  Ha! ;) ;D

The names Koda or Kota were suggested. Supposedly means friend, I'm not sure.
J.W. you are correct. Lots of terrier in this boy and he was a nose to the ground guy in the woods.

My uncle had a German shepherd/Labrador mix that he named dam-it.  Every time he called for the dog it was come here dam-it  or get in the truck dam-it . People who didn't know that was the dogs name thought he was always mad at the dog.  When that hound passed, it broke my uncle's heart.  Despite the name, he never had a harsh word for the old pup.  Josh

T-Bone?    Terry?    Badger?     Never had terriers....

Definitely change the shelter name - our kids thought our "Sookie" would run away if we renamed her after adoption 3 years ago.

Now everyone thinks my dog's name is "Snookie"   >:(
NOT happy 'bout that.

My brother, and I have several Cathoulas (sp) anyway his first is named Camo he runs a hydrographic company ....I think I can post this northwest hydroprint. com  If thats a problem MODS delete it. His second is named hydro. Had a heeler I named "yote". The first time I seen one of these dogs at a distance I was predator hunting, and seen what I thouhgt was a coyote, had my figer on the trigger (keep in mind this is the middle of nowhere) Then I heard a whistle. I told the guy he may want to put somethng on his dog so it won't get shot! So that's how he got his name
