Heres a hackberry bow i started tearing into back at martys(one of several staves worked on that weekend),and i got around to wrapping it up a few days ago. This was a stave from pearly, thanks buddy ;)...and now i pass it on to my bro-in law. Its a lefty, but can be shot well from either way due to perfect string tracking. Its 67" ntn, 43@27".

where is our brace and full draw shot?????????
-
thanks for looking ;)
-
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!! amazing work i love the big knot in the limb.
-
Sahhhhhhhweet bow Chris! Maybe that gnarly knot will help K-hat relax a little on his knot issue! I love me some hackberry. I still cant believe you got a bow out that crap stave. It was joke I swear!
-
THANK YOU
-
thanks guys....if you look closely each limb has a big knot, and each are the exact same distance from the center of the handle. i laid it out like this on purpose..i think the unbraced shot shows them the best.

Super cool bow BH, thanks for sharing the pics and inspiration...knots, hmmm....you'll see why I say they in a few when I post up a pic of an osage stave I just lay'd out and cut out 5 minutes ago.

That's a sweet bow. I have to try me some of that hackberry.

Great Hack job Hawkman!!!!
That was definitely not the easiest hunk of wood to make a bow from... Man you turn out some crazy bows!!!

-
Like it nice... :D
-
Blackhawk: I have some seasoned hackberry in the garage. Just haven't got around to building anything out of it yet. How did you bend it, steam or dry heat?
-
thanks bubby
thanks ifrit617
thanks gun doc...hope you dont mean literally ;)
thanks stave master keenan ;)
thanks vinemaplebows...one of these days i need to get me some of that wood
@clint...what are you waiting for....get to bending boy. the deflex in the working limbs are natural from those two knots, and the handle area was slightly reflexed,so i took advantage of this and made a 5 curve and flipped the tips with dry heat as i heat treated...kill two birds with one stone ya know
-
Oh my! :o. I meant to say it really makes the grain stand out! There's been enough wood popping this week. :'( ;D. I hope I didn't jinx your stick! Josh
-
These 5 curves are always interesting bows to me. Very nice work
-
That is sweet brother I love how you took nothing in the shop and made a piece of art work. That is sweet looking bow brother good job a nother fine looking bow.

That's a beauty, love the symmetrical knots!! Believe me Pearly, i was eyeballin 'em soon as the pics loaded ;) Kinda has a similar profile to the hackberry character stave i just finished. Love it! Nice work as always Blackhawk :D

Sorry guys I didn't take any pics of giving this one away to my brother in law,or of him shooting it,cus I was too busy shooting alongside him with my new trade bow :D
He was surprised and stoked...he's a wheelie shooter..I'm hoping he takes it out hunting at least once...I think he will. :)
-
great looker......I think hackberry will be one of my next tries.....
-
Great bow, hope you get the bro in law converted. I got my daughters boyfreind to put down his compound after I put a hickory bow in his hands. The problem is now that he has made his own osage bow, he is eyeing up my wood supply!
-
Great bow buddy.. I hope ya converted another one.( To real bows) ;D
-
thanks country...give it a whirl...its super easy to work stuff :)
thanks bob....slowly but surely ive been trying...hes shot my bows before...n now he owns one,so maybe this will keep steering him in the right direction ;)
thanks buddy bill...cross your fingers...were def stirring up a lil movement here in pa ;)

-
Awesome!! Got to love those knots in the dead freakn' center of the limb.
-
thanks pappy ;)
thanks scowler
thanks monative...lets hope they hold ;)
-
That turned out sweet Chris! Looks like you worked well with what the wood would give you on that one. As for a a PA shoot, heck ya, call me up! Bill and I tried to make it out on the farm on Sat but it was 29 degrees in the morning (and I was a bit hung over). I aired some out later in the day. The latest bow was shooting em about 165 at my draw length. fun fun! I'm ichin to let some more fly! So what you up to Friday after work? Want to kill some stumps and heat up some wood? >>------------->
-
Cool! Those knots would scare me to death! It amazes me to see what some of the people on here can do!
-
Thanks rob...easy on grandpas cough syrup buddy ;)...sure come on over anytime after three,n if the weathers cooperating n my dog don't slip the chain again we'll go let some fly, then come back n torture some wood >:D
Thanks frank...wood is amazing stuff and can take more than we give credit for :)
-
Nice job Blackhawk. I am working on my first hackberry as we speak. Should have it tillered by the weekend. I'm hopeful it will prove to be a good bow wood as we have an abundance of it in our area. I'll post something on it when its done. Danny
-
Sounds cool danny...thanks....I hope you do post it....its been awhile since we've seen something from ya ;)...oh and just make sure to give her a good heat treat.
-
Man I love that braced pic and the full draw pic. Way to get creative..
Cipriano
-
Blackhawk, I intend to heat treat it and once its done will post pics if I can remember how, lol. I'm really excited about the possibilities of hackberry. I have qutie a bit of osage but most of it is going to require significant work with the heat gun and not that I mind, but when it comes to just knocking out a bow for someone, if you start with good stright , knot free wood it sure speeds up the process. Thanks for the inspiration and encouragement. Danny
-
I think you'll like it danny...especially if you don't have to make any major corrections like you do with character hedge...with a nice clean hack stave you can spit one out in no time with good results too. Funny thing is I've never harvested a hackberry,my hackberry dealer always hooks me up fat >:D
