Jackcrafty, you say dry heat on dry wood. Am I to assume that I should steam green shoots or can I heat straighten also, and should I use oil at all?

Gary, the rule of thumb is to use dry heat on dry wood and wet heat on wet wood.  You can bend the rules if you want, of course, but I don't recommend it.

As for using oil, all I can say is that I do not use it unless I'm going to apply an oil finish on my arrows as the last step.  I have used oil before, but I've ended up scraping off the oil before I could paint or stain the wood.  For me, it's an added step in most cases.

Patrick, do you find that youpon holly harder to work than the privet in the video (watching part 3 now)?  I have been pulling my hair out with that stuff.  It doesn't take to my heat gun very well at all.  I visited GaryR's place a couple weeks ago and it had more youpon holly than I've ever seen in one spot.  Some really big stuff too.  Wonder if it makes good sapling bows?  Some was splittable.

The yaupon holly is harder to straighten than the privet if I don't do a lot of preliminary straightening of the yaupon before it dries.  Yaupon will crack during straightening very easily when it's dry.

I have a couple good saplings of yaupon for bows but I've never gotten around to trying it.  It probably works fine.

George, I was just down there this weekend with my Mom and kids. I walked the place with a can of spray paint to mark some trees that are possible bows. Saw plenty of holly 4-6 inches at base. I would love for you to work a bow out of one so we know if it's worth it. Just let me know.

Pretty sure I'll be heading out to cut next winters firewood soon. I'll get you some Youpon and me some Hickory, Elm, and a Cedar I plan on backing. I was just there and went to cut Youpon shoots for shafts when I realized I forgot my loppers. I tried the cordless circular saw and quit after about 5.
