Got the op. to hit some rock today. I spalled these from bigger pieces. The ones on left are from Tower, I think the keoke(?) I got from Iowabow. This is about the hight of my skill level right now. I don't have flake scars like I see on others, so I know there is a basic skill that I am lacking. I'd say angle of pressure when flaking. I'm beginning to get some pretty good spalls now, when I really concentrate on it. ;) I had to stop pretty big on these cuz of that lack of skill too. From L to R, 191 grains, 179g and 153g. Thanks for any input and all comments, derik

Those look pretty good Derik! Its not so much lack of skill as it is lack of inward pressure ;) Are you using an Ishi stick or just a hand flaker?

Today I used both, w/ this tougher stone I started using the ishi w/ a flat head on it. "Inward", towards the rock, I'll work @ it. Thanks, dpgratz

Looking real good, Derik.

What type of Ishi do you have? I really like the 3/4" flexible Ishi for driving long flakes. You can run flakes 2 to 3 inches with the proper technique. Its all about buildup of inward force before you try to detach the flake. ;)

"What type of Ishi do you have? I really like the 3/4" flexible Ishi" ...ahh a broom stick and a smashed piece of grounding wire, 10gauge I'd say. flexible ishi...go figure... ??? Like I said in the first post, got me a basic skill lackin' here. I'm fixin to learn it though. Thanks guys, dpgratz

Those look good Derik. Lot better than my early ones. We should've got together today, cause I built a big fire and did a lot of sorting and pressure flaking with the Ishi stick. Keep at it and you'll be there soon.

Really good points. Keep it up! It took me a long time to make points like that.
