Howdy, Osage Outlaw started a cool thread asking about day jobs. Now what have you got to say about hobbies other than making bows. Yeah I know, bows, hunting and fishing and knapping. What else is there?
Well for me there's martial arts (Aikido), bonsai (I'm tempted to make a really little bow if one of my trees dies), vegetable gardening, music (clarinets, tenor sax, recorders, mountain dulcimer), cabinetry and remodeling. Oh and reading!

I am a fairly decent golfer. I played my best 9 holes ever last year at 2 over par :) Before I got married, I was into a lot of sports leagues; bowling, softball, and 2 different basketball leagues. I enjoy reading but most of my books are either bowbuilding/knapping or native american related. Really, if I'm not doing something bow related, I'm spending time with the wife and kids. I don't have much time for anything else.
-
Blacksmithing, fishing, making stuff go fast pull hard or slop around in the mud, cooking I'm actually pretty good at it, got a fifteen foot jon boat with a 25hp motor pretty fast with just me and a tank of gas lots of grins there.Ron
-
Landscaping, taking care of our property (pine plantation), playing farmer on my tractor for the wildlife, used to coonhunt but put that on the backburner for now (with my young boys taking up my time), love to duck hunt and turkey hunt, working on my truck, collecting books, and skeet and trap shooting.
-
i do alot of bowfishing.i am a carp killer.i also collect guns and antique fishing gear.i work alot so that is about all i have time for.good thread by the way,Steve

Other than making bows from WOOD.... I like to make anything I can think of out of wood.
With 2 grandkids I have made wood blocks, a shadow box for a small bow and arrows for grandson, an airplane swing for hanging in a tree, built a custom door for a tree house, a doll cradle, a rocking horse.... made 2 small canoes (10-12 inches long} a couple weeks ago just to see if I could ....and just for my kicks.......I'm working on a klopotec >:D ???
I like to cook too...smoke meat, grill, wood fired pizza!!!!... and eat!! 8)
I always have a trail camera out...and will look for shed antlers tomorrow with my son.
-
Lowell, I'm taking my son out shed hunting tomorrow too. Good luck.
Can I ad making tiny bows and arrows from office supplies to my list :D This little thing is wicked.

Good thread Ron. Most of my time is taken up with work (school), but on my free free time I love spending time with the family. Fishing, camping, cooking, and working in the yard. We collect and gather flint together with is a lot of fun.
I make wooden crosses. All types and shapes out of all different types of wood. I love to read, but don't get to much. Hunting takes a lot of my free time because I spend that time with Diego. I write for fun. Short stories. I like cooking and gardening. Love going to church with the family.

Other than flintknapping, I enjoy spending time with the family, fishing, hunting and throwing the ball for my labrador.
-
I put in about 30 hours a week working with birds of prey and giving wildlife education programs at local schools, civic organizations, sportsman's groups, weddings, bar mitzvahs, and birthday parties. I get to gut rats and mice, de-yolk day old chicks, scrape bird poop, an get bit by a great horned owl that is coming to trust me one bite at a time. I do fundraising, public relations, blog, write e-newsletter articles, and anything else to keep this tiny little non-profit needs. All for no pay.
Hopefully soon this organization will have aditional volunteer staff to give me the time to become an apprentice to one of our local falconers. The knowledge is invaluable for the non-profit, of course. But hunting a redtail hawk on cottontails makes me all kinds of excited!
I also like long walks on the beach, intimate candlelit dinners, and poking dead things with a stick.
-
JW As a only somewhat reformed Hawker I can say that catching rabbits with a bird you trained is a thrill that few other things can match. Falconry is a full time life style though. You and the bird both do best with a routine of daily hunting. I, sadly, no longer have time or daily access to adequate hunting spots. Good luck though. Ron

Osage Outlaw, Congratulations with the golf score. I could never get into it, though my Dad was really good. I tended to spend all my time looking for lost balls. I now joke that I was training for cryptorchid surgeries. (That's really an obscure "in" joke. Look up cryptorchid and it should become obvious.) Ron

That's funny. In 12 days I'm having my vas deferens disconnected :o Guess I'll be shooting blunts from now on ;)

Welcome to the club. I fancied myself a golfer for awhile, but then reality set in. I flew radio controlled model airplanes for years, but got tired of it. The only thing (besides hunting and archery) I have done my entire life is singing in church. Love it.

Great thread. Past hobbies include, Tesla coils, jacobs ladders and anything i could find super high voltage. The obvious ones are making bows, flint knapping and making arrows. Lately lots of reading and drawing. Just purchased everything i need to start bladesmithing when i get off of this smelly island and back home. Have not been on in ~9 months because the sat. com internet blocks "weapons related sites" now i have my own 3g stick and can once again add perusing P.A. to my list.

You kinda said to take hunting and fishing for granted so... I shoot. A lot. Handguns, rifles, shotgun, bow, sling just whatever.Used
to enjoy competing in firearm matches but just plain got tired of all the reloading. It is more fun now.
My wife and I sing in a couple of choral groups, a few weddings every year and way too many funerals. I am so cute in a tux.
Trail cams, woods walking, mules, and lately, rehabbing from hand surgeries. Only one of those left, though.
Oh, one of the most enjoyable is keeping up with this PA website. I don't do well with people so this is my social life.

I teach HS English...so I am an obsessive reader and bibliophile......I play a lot of table top miniatures games, I watch rugby when I find it on cable and ESPN3.
I am a father of two and married for 12 years in May.....but they are my life...not a hobby.
I haven't been hunting in years.....unless you count hunting my fellow man with an airsoft gun.....what a rush, but it doesn't have that "doing something with it all the time feel", know what I mean?
I am an avid golfer.....about a 10 handicap......as a teacher.....the summers are the only real time I get to play...and a day off every now and again.
Hopefully I will get back out hunting this fall, but I really never want to hunt with a gun again....I like the quiet.
So hobbies? Hmmmmmm, archery and everything that goes with it......reading.....movies......table top mini games.....golf....and a bit of airsoft!

Besides the obvious archery affliction I have. I absolutely love my band and playing out every chance we get. I lived on the water since I was 5. Then selfbows got ahold of me badly and it was time to choose fishing or bows because my family time suffered. I sold the boat and just fish when I can. Maybe 8-10 times a summer now instead 4-5 times a week with B.A.S.S. federation tourneys sprinkled in.
Golf Clint? Come on! Golf is for dudes that cant fish..........;) Now I have to form a different opinion about you, I dont like doing that buddy!

I can fish too. I've been golfing since I was in the 3rd grade. I only go 3 or 4 times a year now. I fish a lot more than that.
-
Nice cover up pal, real nice....Im just messing with you anyhow. I went through my golf phase 15 years ago. Dad loves it so I thought I would try it for a few months.
-
Was a serious runner until I fell out of one too many trees deer hunting, now I am a serious walker. I walk 12 miles a week, work out with weights 3 days a week and do back stuff on my off days to keep the demons from my last fall at bay.
I was once a very good duck decoy carver, carving quit being fun when I turned my hobby into a business, put down my duck carving tools in 86 and never touched them again.
Took up bow making in 96, I can tell it will be a lifetime affliction.
Started building flintlock rifles three years ago, another lifetime affliction I am sure. The rifle building has the potential to keep me learning for the rest of my life, first building and in the future, forging metal parts, carving wood and finally engraving.
I garden a good bit, can cook almost anything and being retired, I can hunt every day if I feel like it.
My wife and attend all the traditional tournaments within 200 miles of our home in NW Alabama. We have a nice 5th wheel camper so we go a day or two early and stay a day late to make every event a mini vacation.
-
besides making bows and arrows and quivers n such
i make lots of other stuff.
working on something most everyday.
current project is a cupla masks for fat tuesday/madri gras parade.
also collect knives, old, unusual and handmade. the older the better.
always looking for new places to hunt artifacts. my pops was an avid collector/hunter.
i used to follow him while growing up. never lost the passion/obsession for the find.
though i dont have the time these days like i have had in the past.
read lots-mostly non-fiction, history related.
ride a bicycle almost daily.
long distance runner for many years till my knees and hips started screaming at me.
thats when i took up cycling. walk a cupla miles most every morning too.
another passion, vintage/antique bicycles, parts and ephemera.
also collect art. mostly from local artists i know.
grow as much of my own food as i have room for.
hiking camping backpacking. tho i dont seem to get those things done as much as i used to either.
-
...almost everything everyone else said. Picking something and sticking with it is the hard part. So far archery and archery related activities has the best hold on me. I like to hunt, fish, hike, camping, artifact hunting, most everything outside, gardening, landscaping, collecting and studying native plants(haven't lately) andc any wild crafting I can learn. I never liked playing team sports or golf or tennis.
I'll at least try most anything.
-
Had a nice day with my hobby and my son and even found one....
-
Between the "Honey-Do" list and grandchildren I do not have much time fo rthe hobbies I would like to pursue. I am a maker, player and collector of international flutes. I have about 30 now. I have about a dozen walking sticks in the garage that have needed finishing for sometime now. Tore out the back patio years ago with the intent of re-doing it in native slate (still a mudpit in the winter). Always need to find time to keep the wood shed filled. My son is after me to put a concrete base down for haybales so we can shoot the modern recurves that are in the closet. With out the concrete the grouns squirrels and gophers would chew it to nothing in short order. My wife and I like to go to auctions where there is NDN stuff up for bid. Seems like the last 7 years or so between children and the wife lots of my "off" time has been spent going to various doctors. So - I would like to get into bowyering and smithing. All a matter of time I suppose.
-
Nice find Lowell. You had a better day than we did. It was nice to spend some time hiking with my son even though we didn't find anything.
-
Beer and Wine making are my other passion.
-
I am gonna try to give you the short answer , I hope someday to right out the adventures of
(Guy from Ohio) one of these days soon! But till then !
I have been known as a collector of hobbies ( about anything out doors related you can think of ) At one time or another I have had antique tools for all aspects of the great outdoors !
About 1975 I no longer enjoyed the direction archery was headed so I switched to black powder exclusively for hunting for awhile and had a blast! but my heart kept drawing me back to archery!!
If you name something that can take place in the backwoods of Ohio I have been involved in it!
My wife and I have been serving the folks that come thru the doors of our church for 40 yrs that is how God brought us together and we have been married for 35 now!! just about anything anyone needed we have done our best at helping them , now a days the grand children get a lot of our time !!

I play the ukulele and ukebanjo ;D, keep a few bee hives, make stuff out of metal, spend a lot of time outside w/ my boys trying to get them as connected to nature and the ways of the outdoors as I can while they still want to hang out w/ Papa. Knapping is my newest hobby and arrow making I like a bunch. Haven't made a bow yet, I just shoot a lot. dpgratz

Like most of you guys, alot of things interest me and take up spare time. Not really a master of anything, but can grow or build most anything.I take alot of pictures (sometimes),garden up a mess of eats or flowers, orchardist, keep a big flock of chickens, try to stay on the good side of my bride, sometimes I write.certainly hunt and fish.read, walk good country, work fine wood, dream. need to make fresh new gear for a primitive deer, elk, bear, turkey, etc. gonna work on my tan this summer,do all my outside work in a loincloth. Hunt this warm early season country right. ' Frank

Out side of trying to keep my self and family in bows and arrows Hmm! Any thing aside from what I should be doing. >:D My wife will vouch for that. ;D Hikeing, shed hunting and spending time with family. 8)

Thanks Gus... I forgot to mention that I'm a professional "gatherer" and "trader." ;D ;) I gather raw materials and sometimes I gather and make neat things that no one that I know of has ever thought about.
I was given that big redfish on a pier on the Texas Coast last July. Gus got the slabs of meat and I kept the skin. Well when we came home I washed and cleaned the scales and set them out to dry. One day it hit me that they were naturally shaped like a guitar pick. I don't play the guitar so i don't know how that happened.
Anyway, I made guitar picks out of the scales. They work great according to the guitar playing folks I have given some too.
Gather and disperse... And trade... I enjoy that ;)

Dang Cipriano, at first I thought you caught that thing. That would have been a heck of a catch!
-
Jimbob it was a huge fish. It swallowed the hook and was going to die, so the guy that caught it gave it to me and I tagged it. He caught 12 this big and tossed them all back.

Thats a fine red. I cant imagine the fight a red that big would give you. Nice hat Cippy!

Tao style Ti Chi, professional woodturner/ sculptor, woodturning teacher, USMC combat vet, gardening, following a Lakota spiritual path, fly fishing and tying flys, flint knapping, creative writing, black powder shooting and blowing stuff up, learning new stuff, tracking, kayaking both sea kayaking and kayak fishing, pretty good cook, and I like turning over rocks of all kinds as you never know what you will find. And no I don't want a date with any of you bums.
-
Been doing martial arts/boxing for about 25 years now. Also fishing, hunting, video games, working out, hiking, painting... Before my back surgeries I golfed and snowboarded regurally.
-
Awesome thread! Well, I do still occasionally do tattoos. I used to do it for a living, I really enjoyed it, but needed a real job. I am about 20 credits shy of my 2nd bachelors degree in art education. The first degree is in fine arts, painting and sculpture, so I do a lot of that also. I also do a little pottery, wood turning of bowls and turkey calls. All that along with my two beautiful daughters and my wonderful Wife, keeps me pretty darn busy.

This is a great thread! Im glad i found it! Well other than making bows and flintknapping (which has really got a hold on me right now) Ive been getting in to brain tanning and other primitive skills such as friction fire and cordage. Also music has been my greatest love! Im a multi instrumentalist. I play just about everything including Guitar, Piano, Banjo, mandolin, flute, trombone, drums, cello, accordian, the list goes on. I was a singer in a rock band for most of my twenties and had the opportunity to play shows and tour with bands like Alien Ant Farm, Saliva, Disturbed to name a few. I have since gone on to pursue my own music as a Singer/Songwriter. I even had a record deal in Nashville for a while... these days I enjoy being married and staying in one place with a daly routine. :) I am working on a new album that I hope to have pressed up before the classic though. ;) If anyones interested you can google Tomorrows rescue to see some old videos of my band on you tube...or Will Harrison. theres a few things out there still with my music on them.
-
Practiced Japanese Martial Arts for over 40 years, but have slowed down doing it lately. I've worn out the knees, hip, and shoulders. I like to collect old Bear recurves and other odds and ends I find at the Flea Markets and I scuba and snorkle the rivers here for artifacts, fossils and Agatized Coral.
-
I love mature bucks just not the hunting. But the getting ready it's 365 days a year for me. I LOVE MANAGEING the farms I hunt. And 3 others for other people and all the work that go's into doing it. Most of my hobbys are in some way related to mature bucks. I love makeing shoot arrows make trade points ,knap hunting heads as well as make a knife or 2 every winter.
I have a couple indain camps I check out everyyear before green up for heads or artifacts. I never miss shoom season and have sold and eaten them as long as I can remember. I use'lly camp a time or 3 with my sons. Fly fish every chance I get. When AUG, SEPT rolls around. I have a little ginsang bissness going. My hobbys are season related mosty. I guess you can say my whole lifes a hobby. It is to me. If you like what your doing you never go to work.
-
I make short walking sticks that look like broken left over bow parts. Sometimes I make jig saw puzzles that look like bows that have been blown up,,,,,,,,,,, Other times I make very small pieces of fire wood that resembles kindling but is often sanded and shaped. You get the idea.
OK for the serious side. I've surprised how many of us are into martial arts. I was a gymnast for seven years, through high school and collage. Competed against some of the greats like Bart Conner and Kirt Thomas. Mostly rings and high bar. It was those years that I was in the Martial arts. Now years later the flexibility is gone and It's hard enough to get the foot above the waist let alone up at head level.
for years was into building and flying RC planes, scuba diving, dirt bike racing , snow skiing, water skiing, and just about any other adrenaline filled sport. These last few years my life is adjusting to low impact sports. Taking up photography again and fishing and even back to the RC plane stuff.
Of coarse the hunting, working hides, making knives, flint knapping and all the primitive stuff is first on the mind. Always! And this leads to the other hobbies of collecting animal parts,,,,, piles of sticks,,,,,and bad driving habits when going through the forest.
-
I make fireworks from scratch.
-
OK, I like hearing about everybody's interests, but homemade fireworks has got to be first.
Some of my bonsai are blooming. I just had to bring this plum inside for a couple of says.(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc270/May-Pumphrey/IMG_0304.jpg) Ron
-
I don't see any staves in that thing.
-
well back in the day i grew up rodeoing and did alot of saddle bronc and bull riding, and some dogging, and a ton of leather craft, used to windsurf every chance i got, Kenpo, Tae kuan do and Chinese Kempo, but now that my knees are titanium and my wrists only bend about half of what they should just been building bows arrows atlatls and chipping rock, camping and hunting, fishing, i'm a poor excuse for a fly fisherman but i keep at it, shoot some blk powder and refinishing some guns, just regular stuff, Bub
-
The similarities here are pretty amazing, guys write stuff and it's "Oh yeah,..I like those things too ! " Ha ! What a great village we have. ' Frank
-
I don't see any staves in that thing.
Amateur!!!
I see three different ways I could go at that tree! Gstoneberg just fainted with joy!
-
I build short bows, but not that short. Would be fun to straighten that one though. ;) Thanks for thinkin of me JW... but I never faint with joy. Been known to get teary eyed over a nice stave. 8)
George
-
Howdy, They'd be some pretty short bows! Ron
-
Nice specimen Ron, very similar to the style I prefer to do.
-
Thanks Badger! When I bought my house there were a couple of seedling plums growing in the back yard. They were too small for bowstaves, so what else was I to do with them? Ron
-
For several years I competed in strongman contests and managed to do fairly well in them. I was working hard on winning my pro card when I realized it was taking too much time away from my family and other things. I would fly out of church each Sunday to drive an hour to meet my training partners, train for 3-4 hours, and then drive an hour home. Then there were the weekends I would drive 2-3 hours to train with other guys. On top of that I traveled to most of the states in the southeast to compete. I still train pretty hard, but not quite that hard.
I too carved decoys for a while. My dad has been a decoy collector for a while, and carves some himself so it was one of the first things I took up. I don't care much for the painting though. I just don't have the patience that it requires.
I also love to fish, especially saltwater. Unfortunately my favorite fishin' hole is about 6 hours away, and not always accessable now. I still love slow trolling for crappies, and soaking some baits for stripers, hybrids, and big flatheads too.
-
First and foremost for me is martial arts... I have been doing them since I was five and don't plan on stopping till I'm 90... >:D After that I love making weapons of any sort... Started when I was 3 or 4 with cardboard knives and swords, but now I have made and continue to make and practice with just about any primitive weapon there is. I love shooting just about anything and practicing survival and self reliance skills. Also love kayaking, backpacking, and fishing, especially from my kayak..
Jon
-
I make fireworks from scratch.
Huh? ??? ;D

Parnell, with different fuels and different oxidizers you can produce all kinds of colors. My kids and I love it.

I really love fishing and hunting, but my other hobbies are woodcarving and leather working.
-
Hobbies, well my wife sais I have too many lol. I'm a black belt in Karate and teach a karate class 2 x per week. I'm also a student in Jui Jitsu usually hit the mats about 3 x week. Love to hunt and fish. Other than that I enjoy making bows and arrows. Working on my first antler handle knife.
-
Fishing and hunting of course. I'm also an amateur gun smith. I used to race motocross until I got fat, lazy and married, now I ride big cruisers. I'm in the process of writing a book (need to get back at that). I'm also a firearm instructor for our 4H region. I love shooting and using all weapon systems I can get my gritty hands on. Well that's enough for now. Josh
-
Fishing, fly-tying, cooking, and with the new scalping knife from M-P i am looking for things to use it on!
-
Building bows and arrows has dang near eclipsed some of the others..... but....
I love to paddle a canoe. I truly love to see what's around the bend on a little river or creek I haven't been down before.
Catching catfish - limb lines, trot lines, rod and reel, jugs..... I love it all.
Picking the guitar and singing old country, bluegrass, and folk music.
Painting landscapes... acrylics usually. If I can't actually be in the woods, I will paint a place to go!
Hunting and fishing, of course. oh, and lurking on PA.
-
My life is boring compared with some of you guys.
Talented cook, love especially Thai and Indian cuisine, and anything you can toss on a bbq grill. Dieting is I guess a temporary hobby, I've lost over 30 pounds since around September, and want to get down to about 140, my 22-year old weight; only 27 lbs to go.
I play the concertina, I guess my love of nautical history, and used to be an oboist through college.
Atlatls and overall stone age technology are big interests, and sometimes life drawing. I model as well as draw, though I am not particularly a good artist.
I guess my most unusual talent is I am a fully qualified motorman for a restored 114-year old combination trolley car, a Wason with GE controllers and motors that operated in this area until 1926 for the Shelburne Falls and Colraine Street Railway Company, when it was converted to a chicken coop for many years.
I also build furniture when I can find a place for a new piece, and am writing a book about my great uncle's WWII B-26 bomb group, the 391st (Medium). Tracey flew 65 combat missions, including D-Day and against German V1 missile sites.
Dane
-
Dane, boring??? surely you jest...the book sounds like an awesome tribute to those who came before us. Cheers!
-
I hunt, fish, travel, write, play guitar and songwrite, record, and a bunch of other stuff. I self-published two books last year that are memoirs of my time in the Army. My wife and I love to travel. I also love gardening and playing around outside. I love anything to do with history, too.
I did Civil War reenacting for years, but haven't for a while. I plan to get back into living history after I retire, but it'll probably be black powder rendezvous.
I have a bunch of hobbies. The only reason I work a job is to pay for my hobbies.
-
Lee, thanks. The 391st project has consumed me for almost ten years. The documents i have been priveleged to study alone are such an honor, information that has not seen the light of day in six + decades. The tactical air war is nearly forgotten, too, so to keep this history alive and remember those guys who fought and often died to keep the world free should never be forgotten.
Pepe, how is going bro? Id love to read your two books on your (I presume) Tower Rat days. I am guessing that my time with the 74th USAFAD will be similar to what you guys experienced. I've hooked up with the old unit and my old bros through a facebook page, and man, it is great to relieve those times in Germany.

Yes, the oboe, aka hotboy. An ill wind nobody blows good. Bet you were a tuba player and jealous that I got to tune up the entire group. :) Oh yes, making double reeds was huge work, but I got to cary around sharp, dangerous scalpel-like knives and tiller cane into reeds.

You know it brother. You were a DAT, eh?
Charlie Team "Headhunters", 74th United States Army Field Artillary Detachment, 512th Group, 59th Ordinance Brigade. We were south of Augsburg, attached to a German surface to surface missile wing, and our job was custodians of the Pershing 1 warheads. Great duty, the beer was amazing! Just ordered a case recently of Augustinerbau Munchen Edelstoff, the beer of the gods, still as great as when we were faced most times. :) And in winter, you had glowwine.
As for the frauleins...yup. :) And when you couldn't sneak them on post or were on alert or whatever, you always had beer and Ansbach. :)
-
I hear ya Brother Dane.
Some of my closest friends are Arty Folks...
Even though we didn't let them drink in our Gasthauses and Bars back in the day... >:D
I do miss me some Germany from time to time!
When I got home to Houston I was Ruined when it came to Beer and Hot Weather.
In retrospect I should add Brewing Beer and Mead along with Aging FINE Tequila to my Hobby list...
Though the Tequila Aging is more of a Passion than a Hobby.
Oh, and working on and firing Crew Served Weapons, Squad Based Weapons, and Civilian Weapons of all kinds.
And scratch Skydiving off the list for a while...
Had to give it up till my boys are old enough to make it if I don't... :)

Gus, I wasn't a redleg, to clear the air. I was an 11 bullit catcher. The unit was a combination of infantry, artillary, MPs, and various commo and other riff raff. The grunts were outnumbered, but were the cream of the crop at Schwab. :) You probably would be surprised at how much hell the artillary guys can cause given enough motivation however lol.
I was ruined too regarding beer. Nothing in the states compared to even the worst German brand. A black label or a Bud just wasn't the same anymore. :)
I guess we share another hobby, tequila. Nothing else like it. :)

The first one's about the Tower Rat days and the second one's about my IRR recall a couple years later. Both of them have been really popular. I'm sure you'd like them. Erich on mil.com read both of them and loved them. There's a facebook fan page for the first one that has a bunch of old tower rats from all over Germany and a bunch of German fans, too. A lot of MP tower rats have read it and liked it, so I think it was a similar experience anywhere. It's sold quite a few in Germany. You should check it out! If you put "SAT & BAF!" in the search thing on facebook, you should see it. I have an author page on there, too.
If you click "like" on there, you can see updates on the books. The "SAT & BAF!" page is kind of a hangout for old tower rats.
It's good to see you!

Got a regular 50 hr a week job but the wife and I like to travel once in a while. We also live on the ocean and I do a bit of Kayak fishing here,

Add me to the tequila hobby list, too. I love fine tequilas.
I have a hard time keeping it around long enough to age it, though.
;D

I hear ya PepeLep!!!
But when it comes to aging Tequila, I have the Iron Will of Vulcan and the Patience of Jobe!!!
We will serve NO Tequila... Before its Time.
:)
Hey Coaster!
Nice Flounder... :)
Just kidding... have you though about saving the skins off of Halibut for Backing Bows?
Halibut Rawhide!
Planning on Laying down a Mead or two to ferment this Spring.
1 gallon of the Honey of your choice, I like Clover Honey or Orange Blossom Honey.
4 gallons of Spring Water.
And the Yeast of your choice, I like to use a Champagne yeast to insure a good high Alcohol content. :)

Dane, I just remember something else you should check out on facebook (besides my fan page for the book). There's a Pershing group on there, too. I think it might be called "Pershing Professionals" or something. It's filled with people from all throughout Pershing. There are a couple more groups I'm in, too, but that one's where you're most likely to see people from where you were.
In case the rest of you don't know, Dane and I were both infantrymen who did a really unique job in Germany.

Never new you guys used fish skins until I joined PA... that one hit the bow before I ever built a bow... This spring you can bet I'll be looking at fish skins different :)
-
I do a little fly fishing, cooking, and some stereo photography. Mostly just go to work and go to sleep most days....
-
Fly-fishing for salmon, trout and steelhead. Tipi camping. And bow-hunting of course.

Doug, just got back to this thread. I will look for your books. Erich and I did OSUT at Ft. Benning together. He is a great guy overall. He was the tallest E1, I was the shortest.
I've checked out that group, btw. And I will find your fan page and join, as well. Good stuff.

Aborigial living skills, blacksmithing, mma, hunting of all sorts(except for sandhill cranes) and any kind of fishing, I dabble in western martail arts, Im also into boyscouting, backpacking, blackpowder shooting, and I also cook(however I cant bake). Not bad considering im 17!! ::)
-
I don't do much else other than take rides on the motorcycle and occasionally bicycle even though i live in a congested area. And i read a lot of books until my eyes are too tired then i go outside and sit down and stare in to space. I was into the primitive skills but after it took me like 5 months to figure out friction fire, i haven't done much other learning. Still haven't figured out(identified) the good plants to make cordage out of and the rest of that. I'd like to take up gardening, but i'm 17 and don't own my own place and the parents are against backyard gardening, don't ask me why
-
What with work taking me away from my family so much, I don't have room for many hobbies that don't involve the family. Bowmaking is my primary one and I have very little time to devote to that. I mostly spend time with my wife and kids. We like camping, fishing, hunting, gardening. We spend a lot of time playing with our wiener...dogs >:D I used to make knives on occasion, before I got into bows. Working on my house used to be a hobby, but after blowing my entire last summer renovating, that became more of a chore. Our camper hasn't left the yard since 2010 :'( When I'm deployed, I spend time reading, going over this forum, drafting house plans, playing the occasional video game, and spend a couple hours a day at the gym.

What type of western martial arts? I was a fighter in the SCA for several years before I got married. Mostly specialized in polearm and spear.

What is it about this forum or this hobby that attracts bass players?
Whadya call a guy that hangs with musicians? Bass Player
How does a bass player break up with the band? "Hey guys, I wrote this song!"
Whadya call a bass player when he breaks up with his girlfriend? Homeless
Whats the difference between a bass player and a large pepperoni pizza? The pizza can feed a family.
All the aforementioned jokes can be modified to drummer jokes as soon as Pearl Drums shows up!!!
John Halverson
former Bass player
P.S. What does bowmaking and bass playing have in common? Both are fun and will never make a living for you.
-
John, You so do not want to start musician jokes! I've got a whole repertoire! Since I'm a reed player I'll start with
How many alto saxophone players does it take to change a light bulb?........ Only one, but you bet there are at least six more standing around to talk about how they would have taken that solo different.
How many clarinet players does it take to change a light bulb?.......Only one, but it may take him all day to find exactly the right bulb.
What do you call a bass clarinet player with 1/2 a brain? ..........Gifted!
What do you call a clarinet player that owns an Alto Clarinet?.........A nerd.
But my favorites; How many bass players does it take to change a light bulb? .............1...5....1....5....1.....5!
Way were pianos invented?.............The bass palyer needed aplace to set down his beer!
Ron
-
Ah, musician jokes.
How many guitar players does it take to change a light bulb? Four. One to actually change the bulb, while the others stand around and say "I can do that."
What is the difference between a violin and a viola? Violas burn longer.
An oboist and a violist got into a huge fight during rehersal. The conducter broke them up, and demanded to know why they were fighting. The oboist said "he broke my reed." When the conductor asked the violist why, he said "Well, he broke one of my strings, but wont tell me which one."
What does the blues musican's tombstone say? I didnt wake up this morning.
What did the drummer get on his IQ test? Saliva.
What is the differnce between a SCUD missile and a bad oboist? The bad oboist can kill you.
Why are harps like elderly parents? they are both unforgiving and hard to get in and out of cars.
Why do claranetists leave their cases on the dashboard? So they can park in a handicappped spot.
What do you call a person who hangs around with musicians? A vocalist.
Use an accordian, go to jail.
-
;D :o Enjoying those music jokes. I played the tuba in hs and transitioned into making playing and collecting flutes from around the world. around thirty in my collection now. "broke my string and won't tell me which one..." ;D
-
You know it's the Bass Player that holds down the Groove.
And the rest of the band follows...
But then again I'm a bad Bass Player.
Cause I got TOO many hobbies!!!
:)

Ha haa JW,but the joke is,what do groupies and DRUMMERS have in common ...they both hang out with musicians !!! And whats that "former bass player" CRUD???
-
Omg,so many comedians! At first all I saw was Jw's post...lmao!! Ya some times it is 1....5...1....5,but not when we do the lemon song or tom sawyer, right Ron? its even more fun when the drummer, the key player, and the guitar player all switch off during YYZ(I take the skins!!).We play out about once a month,so if you live near mass check out SuckerPunch!
-
Dron, What do I know? I just stand around and pretend to play the tenor.
Unfortunately I'm nowhere Mass.(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc270/May-Pumphrey/Scan.jpg)

Years back I googled my name and found about a dozen or so. When I looked at facebook profiles and such I learned that 7 of them, including myself, played bass. One in Australia and another in New Zealand once played in the same band!!!
Whadya call a band with two bass players? We Play For Free.
-
lol..Jw,thats pretty weird!
M-P,I must of miss-read your reply,I though you played the bass! tenor sax is nothing to shake a stick at,kudos!! I would love to incorporate sax into the band or bands,I'm actually in two.
