Title: time to call it a night
Post by: iowabow on February 17, 2012, 02:56:15 am
Just want to share my good times.   I flat knapped one side and on the other I did a base to center flute then a tip to center.  It is only 6 to 1 but what fun. I did this when I got off work tonight and thought I should call it a night and finish it this weekend. Tower this is some of that flint from Texas.

That side is flat alright. How does that stone work?

Nice flute. Now if you could flute the other side and build ya a clovis around it...

Tower I love the way this stone works

Cowboy hehe I wish I could but I am only practicing the fluting while making points so that I can understand them better.  On this one I really want to keep driving these sheet flakes off. The thinner the preform the smaller the platform is getting. The challenge now is how to work a flatter surface. I would like to get to 7:1 ratio.

I watched a paleomanjim demo on fluting and learned something that I am using in the flat flaking. He made a point (statement) while preparing the nipple to remove the ground (abraded) surface on each side of the nipple, he did this so the stone could break clean in that area and not rip out the other side. Soooooooo when preparing a platform I make real small pressure flakes to each side where I want the flake to detach. This has made a big difference in the type of flake I get and reduces the digging that can occur when a flake releases. Does that make any sense?

Makes prefect sense, it works well in percussion thinning.

Lookin good John. Basically what your figuring out is isolated platforms. It really makes all the difference if you wanna get em real thin ;)

Ok this is getting fun.  I am starting to really build some prdictable and consistant flake removal patterns without steps yet.  I must have been switching too soon to a smaller bopper before.  Also I am really powering into the stone at an angle.  I marked the 5 flakes I took early this morning that create that collateral flaking pattern look. I plan on thinning this till it breaks or it is better than any others.

Maybe I could shoot a few flakes from the base and thin the center but I am going to set it aside and work on another and try to beat it. You cant see it but I am jumping up and down doing a victory dance.

Hey I did this with just my large bopper is there a tip for taking futher? Should I sand the ruff surface of the bopper or change the angle ? I always wondered how people could to that 10:1 stuff.

I really like your Knapping Threads IowaBow...
You do an excellent job talking your way through the process.

Haven't had much time lately to knapp but still learning watching your threads.

Thank You for Sharing!
