I finally got to do something today I've always wanted. I took my 10 year old Grandson squirrel hunting in the Green Swamp along the headwaters of the Withlacoochie River. He was hunting with his Christmas gift this year, a .410 single shot bolt action Sears & Roebuck shotgun, the first gun I ever owned. I had let him shoot all of my shotguns and he was the most comfortable with that one so I took it to the gunsmith and had him clean it up, add sling mounts and replace some screws with what was supposed to be there.
I slayed the squirrels yesterday and last weekend but they weren't cooperating this afternoon, but he had a real good time, shot a squirrel but didn't knock it out of the 60' maple tree. I shot it with a .22 and it hit the ground and crawled into a hole before we could get to it ???, Robo squirrel. But it was a great afternoon and nice to see him away from the Video games for awhile.

You're a lucky guy, Eddie! I don't have any grand kids yet, but I can't wait!!
-
Cool Eddie! What a place you live in, huh? Looks like yu should have on hip waders. 8) dpgratz

Adam, I feel really lucky.
Derick, actually it is bone dry, that's why we are down in the river bottom. Usually those Cypress knees are barely above water during the rainy season. If you look close on the cypress trees you can see the high water mark. The only food for the squirrels is in the Water Maples, they're eating the seed pods. Yesterday I found 8 to 10 in one tree and shot 6.

Eddie,
Like was already said you are a lucky guy......But "I" can wait, and wait...oh, did I mention wait!
Sounds like grandpa trained the critters before taking the youngster.....ya I know, got to teach the kid hunting is about the "hunt" not the kill!!! Good way to save shells to! Looks like fun either way! ;)

Eddie,
There is something special about a kid hunting or fishing with grandpa. That had to be a great day and hopefully more fill follow. My 8 year old granddaughter says we're going hog hunting when they come to visit this summer. I'm looking forward to it, though I don't think she'll be old enough to shoot a pig. I do plan to start on a bow for her so we can shoot together when she visits. Her 6 year old sister will need one too now that I think about it. I better get busy...

Eddie,
Thank you for sharing. That is one blessed bow. To own his grandfather's first gun and to hunt with it with his grandfather next to him. When he is a grandfather himself he will look back on this day with a grin and a bucket full of memories.
I don't own any guns from my grandfathers or my dad, but I'm changing that for my boy. Maybe one day your grandson and my son will get to hunt together.

Thanks Guys. It was special and I was proud of him. I walked him quite a bit at two different places and told him to keep track of which direction we were going. He did good, when it came time to go back to the Jeep I told him I'd follow. Both times he got us back with some coaching on what to look for.
-
Good going Eddie he's got a good teacher for sure. Great kid it's hard to find one who will listen like that. Ron

That is so cool Eddie. Mine are just a wee bit small for hunting now. A couple more years and they may be ready. What is really nice is he can wear your camo with no adjustments. O:) Couldn't resist. Sorry ole buddy. Only 6 weeks from Friday til we'll be heading to God's Country to shoot some gobblers. Let me know if you're flying and need a pickup from the airport.

Yea Ronnie, he's a good smart one. Almost perfect grades in school. He wants to be a gunsmith when he gets older.
Dave, yea, yea, he's wearing my leaf suit. It has elastic cuffs and wrist so it can bunch up on him. And more then likely I'll be driving. If gas goes up to $5 a gallon airline tickets will too. :'( ::) Can't wait to play. :)
-
Sounds like you two had a great time. Him not getting anything this time will make the time when he does get something even more special. That is the perfect shotgun to start out on. Hope you get many more time like that.
-
God to pass on traditions like that, also nice camo suit. It is like where's Waldo in that thing
-
Man that looks like fun there Mr. Eddie ;). I gotta wait a few more years before i can take a grandson huntin, if i ever get one, ha. I bet just walking around in there is a purty good workout..
-
It looks like you guys had a ball!! My only 2 grandkids are girls and the oldest is almost 2. I think she is going to be like her dad, though, and love to hunt with papaw. I can't wait till she's old enough.
-
It was fun and my 69 year old buddy I hunt with had his two grown Grandsons down on the river, too.
-
Good stuff Eddie. Those pics are great. I bet he lays in bed at night dreaming about what he will shoot with that gun. ;)

I can't wait till mine are old enugh to get them out.The older one loves to go out in the boat and is content with playing with the bait I net. The younger one ( 2 weeks) ain't much bigger than a squirrel himself.

Ronnie, you have to keep in mind, that you only think that Eddie is the same size as his Grandson. Actually he is using the Ninja mind trick, which makes him seem much smaller than his 6' 6" Arnie, body actually is, and the camo suit is elastic in the seams. That is also why, Eddie always comes away with a bargain at the flea markets, they can't figure out why they just let that guy get such a great deal. Ninja mind control, quite similar to the Jedi Knight mind control. ;) Next time look at his shadow, and not at him directly. ;) ::) Good going Eddie, I need to do some squirrel hunting, I haven't been since the mid to late 70's. You should have had him make a bow drill, or such, fire while he was there. Good job on the back trail. ;)

I really think you're off base on the ninja or Jedi thing, you do know leprechauns can do the same stuff somehow he has even made poor Cathy believe the 6'4" stuff.

Ronnie,
She'll believe it tonight, it's Valentine's 8) Day. :D
-
You might have something there Ron, but he would have to be from the south end of Ireland. However he has never offered me any fine whiskey, except for some so so moonshine, and some South American Lightning. :P Neither were too bad, but nothing to write home about. If I were to be snake bit, I guess, I would have to wait till I got home in a couple of hours, to administer the proper dosage. ::) ::) So I think I will stick to the Ninja mind bending. As he does feed me quite well at times, plus the beer. At least I think he does..... hmmm Ninja mind bending.....save on beer, and food that way..... ;) Well I hope Cathy had a Great Valentines Day. ;) ;) I hope he got her something besides, some wine, a box of chocolate, and a Harlequin romance novel. ::) ;D

George
But George, "you always hurt the one you love"...... ;) Well I am sure you made up for it, by attending to her needs, with tissues, hot tea, decongestion meds, back rubs, hot showers, a supply of Calgon bath salts, ...... Chocolate, a bottle of wine, flowers, and a harlequin romance novel,...... so you can go back to the shop, and check on those staves..... ;) I am sure that Eddie took good care of Cathy, he knows it could be a cold summer, if he doesn't treat her right. Besides he knows he has it good! As long as he doesn't make any Turkey noises ::)....... right Eddie? ;)

That is great Eddie. Lucky kid and lucky grandpa.
-
The Grandson better not get too attached to the .410, as he has a Sister, whom Eddie is grooming to be a hunter, so when she starts hunting, that .410 will change hands, and everyone knows that Granddaughters, get preference over Grandsons! ;) she is only around three, or so I think. But she can shuck an oyster! 8) But by the time she is old enough to hunt, I am sure he will have moved on up to a 20 gauge, or 12 . ;)

my littlest grandson just turned one and the other is two. Be a while before they are shooting anything except the bak end whilst filling a diaper!
-
Right on Eddie, Nothing can compare to quality time as a mentor.
-
Just right Eddie!!
My old Grandad, started me off with his old Iver Johnson 16 Gauge single shot.I killed alot of game with that old scatter gun.Even more than my buds with their pumps.I learned to make the first shot count n i had to buy my own ammo.LOL
