The truth is I give away all of my best bows, one way or another. The eight or nine left on my rack are not near my finest work, but shoot good. I finished up Ruddys bow for the TG trade and got cracking on a stave Matt Wiricki swapped me. Correct me if Im wrong Matt, its an oldie from 1994-96 I think? The below pics are on the brink of floor tillering and still can be whatever I want in draw weight and draw length. Its 64" ttt prior to bending the 9" tips in. The limbs are 1 3/4" out 12" from the fades then straight taper to 3/4" for now. I plan on 7/16'ish when Im done. As it stands now it has about 4" of reflex. The veneers on the handle and tips are mesquite and osage lams about .060 thick each. Im not a fancy pants bow builder usually, but the stave was thin there and had to be built up. So I went all fancy on it :P!The stave is clean as a whistle and quite straight now. This one is staying on my rack when she is done! Its JUST FOR ME! this time!......................................................................or maybe I should just set it aside to be finished for my PA swap bow......hmmmmm.......??????? What do you guys thinks I should do? Sure is a fine blank just sitting there hollaring to be finished.
-
I vote to make it for yourself.
-
I really like the way you made the riser. I may have to try that myself sometime.
-
I say keep for yourself bud.....
-
Get that beautiful looking piece of wood to shooting!
-
Keep it. You deserve a good shooter.
-
Give it to me >:D Nah, keep it for yourself, looks great.
-
I'd say keep it for yourself. You might as well enjoy some of your own work...before you give it away! ;D
-
I say keep it and shoot the crap outta it, till ya build another one you want to keep and need to make room in the rack >:D, Bub
-
I do the same thing Pearl, I have started trying to keep at least on good shooter a
year for me. Keep it. :) Nice looking start. :)
Pappy
-
I do the same, and on top of that i never finish my own?
-
I say get her bending and firing asap...and if it shoots like a dream for you then keep it,but if there's some lil nuance that bothers you then give her away.
-
lookin good pd.you dont mess around. i dont understand how you build bows so fast. rv
-
Good hand tools and good dry wood Ruddy. So what is it? A recurve or a flipped tipper? Or a reflipped bow?
-
Geesh that's a purty bow...If ya just can't keep it I know a guy who will take it off your hands!
-
I'm Just like you on the give-away thing....working on making myself a small collection right now.....ya may want to keep a good one for yourself (just once 8)) fine lookin start by the way.

You can keep that one Pearly cause I like 'em with a cut-in shelves ;)...........Art

I think a guy needs to keep at least one really good shooter he has made but I understand giving them all away. I was impressed with the number of responses that say they give away most of theirs too. I currently only have 1 bow thats made by me and I recently finished that one ( 1 mth ago).Time will tell if it remains in my possesion. I have given away everyone I have made with the exception of the first and that one will never leave me. Its been retired to the wall. Danny

Yeah, it's easy to find that other people have all your best work. Gotta keep a couple of your finest.

Once it became "easier" to build bows it was easier to give them away. You realize, "hey I can build ten more just like it, just give the damn thing to him!". I dont keep track or count of what I build or where they all go, but Im guessing I will eclipse 100 bows this year. I cant even imagine where I would store them all had I not given them away. It was refreshing seeing all the other folks giving theirs away and telling me to keep this one, I think I will do just that!
-
>:( Hey I thought that one was for Me !! ;) ;D
-
I gave you a bow in "kit form" Guy........remember?
-
Some of the pieces seem to be missing ! ;)
-
I gave you a bow in "kit form" Guy........remember?
Now that's funny! I don't care who you are! Josh
-
Well you need to get one sent my way.....lol Great looking bow as usual Pearl
-
Thanks Charlie! Somebody in this years swap is going to regret telling me to keep this one for myself! I got the tips done and its tillered to a low brace. WOW she is going to be a stunner if she holds strong.
-
... but Im guessing I will eclipse 100 bows this year.
Hang on, that's one bow every 3 1/2 days.
You obviously need some trickier staves >:D.
Del
-
Good for you, PD. Unless I gift a bow to a friend or family member all my bows are for me. :) Jawge

Not 100 in a year Del, just my 100th bow total.

I added a few more pics. The drawn pic is 40# @ 20". Thats exactly where I like to be when Im shooting for 50-52# bows. I havent drawn it beyond 20" yet. I havent drawn it past 40# so far either. I like super baby'ing bows until I think my tiller is cool, Im getting close to a cool tiller now. The tip pic stinks, our 1/2 mp camera doesnt like getting closer than 3 feet!
-
Looking good Pearly, so don't screw things up now >:D! Bet you keep that one. Some you just don't give away.
-
Looking really good, I love that style. Tillering is on it's way to perfection.
-
Great looking bow. Once in a while you got to keep one for your reward. Looks like a keeper!
-
Awe come on ya wuss...pull that thing back more.... ;) 40lbers are for wussy's
-
looks like sumphin wrong,,better send it to me so i can fix it,,,,,,,, ::) ::)
-
Looking very good, that should be a nice one, looks a whole lot like a shooter and keeper to me. :) :)I was thinking the same thing Del,he is a machine that looks like a man. ;) ;D ;D

That is a beauty, PD. Looking good. Jawge

Its official. I have a 53# @ 28" healthy, baby bow. I shot it last night 30-40 times, she is a super screamer with a 10 skinny string on it. Wowser. I still have 3" plus of reflex. I will post some finish pics in the coming days.
-
I really like the tips and handle work on it. Can't wait to see the finished pics. I bet she's a beauty.
-
Here are the stats. The bow is 63 1/2" ntn, 64" ttt. Its 1 3/4" wide out 12" from the fades. It gradually narrows from there to 1/2" tips, they are flipped the last 9" of limb. Besides the unusally stiff lower limb....do you see any other flaws taht my eyes dont...BE HONEST? The extra stiff lower limb is intentional. After seeing every one of my bows take a little extra set in the lower limb, I changed my tune. I will go a 1/4" positive at times. 3/16" is common. Thanks for the eyes. The pics are different, but look the same.
-
Could be my bad eyes, but it seems to me the top limb has a really nice smooth arc, while the lower limb goes curve-straight-curve-straight. Kind of 'stepy'. As I said, it could be my eyes looking at a small image.
I am not talking about a stiffness in the lower limb, it just does not seem to 'flow' in a smooth arc.
-
The back is quite wavy right where your talking Bevan. Those eyes still work good!
-
OK, then I would say 'shoot the snot out of it' as someone else said on here.
(or start chasing a ring. you should have a name before long)
-
My ring chasing never ends buddy. I hope I never get that "name" you speak off.
-
How does it feel at full draw Pearly. Feeling even limb strain? That's the important thing.
I've always maintained that it's not so much about making the lower limb stronger, but rather where. And that is the lower fade area. So if you do any more work on the lower limb do so closer to mid-limb.
Another thing, upright shooters as yourself do require greater positive tiller over those that cant their bows IMO. So looks like you're just about on the money. Good job....Art
-
That's how I like to see the tiller, looks perfect to me.

I appreciate the honest opinions guys. Im getting to where I dont trust me anymore! I will shoot it a hundred more times and finish it off. The mesquite grip worked down so well I dont really want to cover it up.....stipple grip maybe? Never done it, but it seems simple enough.
-
Looks pretty darn good to me. I copied the image and flipped it in photoshop, then made it a bit transparent so you could see the mirror image/symmetry what have you.
-
I just kept starring at the pic trying to figure out what the hell kind of string you had on that sucker when I finally read you photo-flipped it, LOL.
Gosh, I'm pretty slow sometimes...looking really good to me bud!
-
Actually Lee he made the little known reverse penobscott. Instead of 2 bow, you use 2 strings. >:D
-
Looks great to me,I would shoot it. :) :) Good piece of wood ,well tillered,I doubt it will change much at least that has been my experience. :) Nice Job. :)
Pappy
-
Your GOLDEN buddy ;) perfecto tillerino :)
-
Shoot it and call it a bow.
-
Thanks guys. I shot it last night for quite a while. Wow she is screamer, very fast and stable at 1 3/4" wide. Thats a cool trick foot! I can dig that. This may sound crazy and even a bit silly. My tillering got much easier, faster and better when I started using my eye's and arms and not any other tillering aids. No more sneak pics until I get this one dolled up.
-
Looks great, PD. Nice tiller. Jawge
-
No nit-pickin here. that is a sweet looking bow. nice curves and tiller is spot on.
