Title: HHB trade dissapointment!!
Post by: DRon knife on January 28, 2012, 06:07:05 pm
:(Well guys its like this,In my opinion the Hophornbeam log and staves looked to be straight with no twist(and still appear that way),sadly there is some twist and I also found a worm hole in the stave I've been working on too! I don't think I'm going to trade anything from this log, unfortunately I did make a deal with someone, I will make good on it,but It wont be from these staves!!

I am very sorry,my motivation was to share(and possibly getting some yella wood)what I thought was sound HHB and really not to profit from It! I have access to more HHB and I've already been looking for more!  I will hand split the next log and make sure There will be no 'surprises'!!  :-[ Ron

Sorry to hear the HHB got bugged, tough break.  I don't think anyone here would feel slighted if you backed outa a trade because you wanted to protect their interests.

I had a look at the staves when you posted pics and was going to tell you that I thought they looked like they had a twist to them.  You have to examine HHB very carefully and sometimes even if the bark looks like it is going straight, up the tree, you can find it has some twist after debarking.  A bit of twist won't bother HHB though, even a lot won't but if you get one that is like a corkscrew then you may have to consider not using it.

How many degrees of twist in a 72" stave would you consider "corkscrew", Mark?

With HHB's reaction to heating, I'd think you could get away with quite a lot of twist!
