Title: walnut trial
Post by: soy on January 14, 2012, 03:04:18 am
Hi all, a while ago I posted a question (can I use dead standing walnut /red elm) well I tried walnut first...the bark was mostly missing and the sap wood was punkey and the first few growth rings were littered with bug holes...well I got under all that to some solid wood and bam!
This one is 68" ntn4" handle 3"fades 2"wide and tapers to 1/2" knocks 16.5"from the tips.
it was a good weight but murphey and his stupid law(not my mess up ;) ) happens
Bringing it down to a lesser draw weight than I had plans, but the wood is beautiful and it held together so the test was a success! I will post pics as I get them from photobucket. Thanks for any criticism.

Dead standing red elm is my next project after I finish my current heat tempered white oak.

Beautiful bow!!  Love that grain pattern on the fades.  If that tiller is off, it isn't far off.  I wouldn't take off the finish to change it if it were mine.  Good work!  That one qualifies as bow art in my book.

Very well done! Trying to convince a friend of mine his walnut needs pruned.... ;D How big in diameter was the original log? Grain pattern looks great.

That is stunning!  I can't imagine attaining that level of skill.   I almost quit trying to make my own bow after I viewed the post about the five year old making a bow, while I am having so much difficulty.  But you have inspired me to endevour on.  Beautiful!

38 lbs is still a good shooter in my books, good luck with that elm! Elm in the UK gets absolutely covered in bug holes that can go all the through the stave as soon as it dies, so there is no way i could use dead standing elm in the UK.

I think some of the issue is how it is being held and drawn. It is not as bad as you think.

Did u do that on a computer or a phone Bevan?
Title: Re: walnut trial

Adding the ellipse works better with a picture from a tiller tree. I think the holder is torking up the bottom limb with holding that elbow that high. and if it is canted toward the camera the top limb will look straighter. Just a couple of thoughts.

That is an amazing looking bow!  I love walnut.  I'm new to the forum and to bow making.  I wish I could make something that looks half as good.  Maybe one day.  Anyways Walnut obviously it must make a fair bow.  How did you do your handle?  That looks amazing!

Post by: soy on January 17, 2012, 01:03:18 am
Oscar, thank you and welcome to pa. You will no doubt be building top notch bows in no time, as far as the handle I glued a piece of walnut to the side for the arrow shelf and than removed wood from where it was uncomfortable until it just fit ...hope that kinda makes sence cause its hard for me to describe without showing you  ;)

Tru oil and black walnut go together like oreos n milk...both are tasty good. She finished up real nice. I dont think you can edit an ellipse on the phone unless its in one of the preset images you can edit into a photo....

Absolutely gorgeous bow, soy.  How does it stack up, performance wise, against the other major players in the bow-wood department?

I've shot some real nice shooting 35# bows before. "I believe" (just my opinion) that a 35# bow can shoot even better than a typical 50# bow if the 35# one is very well made.

I don't disagree tmk, I was however going for 50#but working on the thing in the headlights of the semi turns out not to be the best of ideas ...fixing flaws drops weight every time >:(

Working in the headlights of a semi ?  That sounds a bit dangerous! :o  ::) Seriously though, that is beautiful.  I'm trying not to get discouraged, but it seems I keep making firewood instead of bows.

I have a question, did you chase a ring on that thing? I've got walnut all over the place and it sure is a pretty wood, kinda wonder what is the best way to establish the back on it. Treat it like a white wood and just pop the bark or chase a ring like osage, black locust and mulberry?
  Very nice work indeed.   Danny

Yes it is very dangerous (don't try this at home) ;D as far as fire wood goes, they say here if you ain't braken you ain't maken, stick with it and good things will defiantly show up
Dwardo thanks I guess I need to take straight pics
Rkeltner And EricWard thanks I have found others on here that made me do the same
Sidewinder I had to chase several rings as the outside was rotten and full of bug holes
after you do one walnut chasing osage seams so much easier but I've been told the sap wood works also or a blend of the two...

Thanks again all for the kind words :)
