Got the skins on the snaky Osage I have been working on a while,I shot it a bunch Friday evening and again Saturday before I commented to the skins,A nice set of Timbers, the other stave's that came out of this tree didn't make it so I was
a little worried,I had one issue in one of the heavy snakes but got that problem fixed,it seem to be doing fine.It tillered out 46 @26 after shooting in and held about 1 1/2 inch of reflex. ,just right for me,very sweet to shoot.I hope to get it all finished up in a few weeks. :)here is a little peek. :) I also blacked the back of the bow,it really makes the skins stand out.I do this to most of the bows I skin. :)

This easily could become the most beautifull bow I have ever seen.................. :-X
-
That thing is insane. Cant wait to see it finished up..
-
Wow, that's a stunning bow!
George
-
Pappy- what do you blacken the backs with? Sweet bow!
-
Bow!? That REALLY does look like a snake! It is obvious a LOT of hard work has gone into that piece of wood. Absolutely incredible!
-
Seen a lot of snaky bows in my time but yours is the the most spectacular I have ever seen. Never seen one with that much character.
-
awesome bow.
-
Extra extra beautiful bow.Outstanding labor of love. Not to downplay this any but I was just wondering what a bow like that weighs mass weight wise at your 46#@26?How long is it?Super hunting bow.A person ought to get within 5 yards of a whitetail with that one LOL.
-
Great work as awlays Mark.
-
Beautiful Pappy. WOW!!! 8)
-
Thanks guys,HoBow I usually just use a large magic marker. Beadman I am not sure on the mass weight but I will check it and see, It is 62 n-n I think ,maybe 61.
It shoot a 600 grain arrow pretty quick, usually bows like these are not the greatest performers [Plenty good for me] but not the best if that is what a person is after but I have had really good luck with longevity if they make it through the
tillering and shoot in process. :) :) :)

Is it a snake? Is it a bow?
Brilliant :)

Good lord :o.....I wanna see that thing bent over....sweet pappy ;)

Pappy that is one of the nicest snake bows that I've ever seen. Didn't know that I was going to fall in love when I got on PA this morning. Incredible bow, Can't wait to see her bending. Great choice on the skins. After looking at some of your bows up close I'm sure it's very detailed and top notch as always
-
I like it.
Very well done.
-
That is one slithering good looking bow Pappy. awesome job!
-
I have to say this is probably my favorite bow of yours Pappy! Looks even better in person ;) and the way nailed the tiller on such a snakey bow is astounding! You are my hero man! :o
-
That is a good one for sure Pappy !!
Bring that thing to Marshall this spring for Norm to see he has not been very impressed with the snaky bows of late !
But I bet if he sees you with that thing we will see a glimmer in his eyes once again !

That's a beauty!!!!!
-
Pappy, never having dealt with Osage I am wondering how these "snaky" bow's come to fruition,do they split like that? They really are amazing!! Nice job!
-
Pappy that's got to be my favorite snakey bow that i've seen, hope it go's for bom, cause it'll have my vote, Bub
-
Looks like an aerial view of a meandering river. Holy guacamole. Looking forward to this.
Gabe

-
Now that thing really does look like a snake Pappy.
I had a feeling it was going to really turn out to be something special. I like how the skins turned out. Great job buddy.
-
oh my god pappy that is the stave my dreams are made of. I really cant wait to see the finished pics amazing work pappy.
-
Pappy, that thing is a work of art. You are truly a master bowyer. Congratulations on what I would consider a bow of a lifetime.
-
Dang Pappy that is one awesome bow.
-
Oooooooohweeeeee!!!!!
-
Pappy, my gOsh, you have really done it. That radical bend on the top limb is so realistic, I dropPed my IPhone and ran. It looks like it is slithering right there on the screen. Outstanding workmanship, my friend. What a pleasure you provide to all of us who love to craft bows. Is there a Bow of the Century category?

WOW!thats about all one can say...WOW!-Hammertime
-
That bow is a masterpiece of tillering, and finish details. Thank you for sharing your work with us.
-
You have to speak parseltongue to shoot that thing?
-
WOW!!!!!
I got one I'm working and it's giving me some fits.
-
That thing gives me the willie's just looking at it. I wouldn't want to wake up and find that next to my sleeping bag :o. Hmm, then again maybe I would ;D
-
Thanks guys, a bunch :) :) It means a lot with some of the beauties you folks turn out. :) :) Beadman you ask about weight,I don't know what any of that means but it is 63 Tip to tip 61 n-n 47@26 and weighs in at 18.832 ounces. don't know if that is good or bad, Some of you guys that study that stuff can let me know. :) :)
DRon they grow and split that way. :) :) Sometimes you can see it in the bark and sometimes you don't know till you split it. Stiks they can do that, just take your time especially in the curves, they will give way there sometimes, kind of like the fads I leave them a little heavy until the last few inches of draw. :) Dan where you been hiding,I have been wondering about you, cool Christmas card by the way. :) :) :) Thanks again.
Pappy
-
What a fantastic piece of 'sage. You could paint eyes on the tip overlays and no one would come near it!
-
That is one of a kind for sure. Got a stave myself that is real snakey to work on someday. I was wondering how do you find the center on one of these snake staves. Do you measure straight across or do you follow the snakey limbs to find the center. Dean

You draw your center line while following the grain. Then measure out from the center line creating your profile as you go up the stave.
Or at least that's how I do it.
AMAZING bow BTW!
Please post a bunch more pictures when its finished up.....I can't wait.

Oh my Pappy, that, that.... I'm dumfounded... That bow is mesmerizing!!!!
Don't want to steal your pictures but that bow just became my screensaver, WOW!!
-
Pappy I guess the final mass weight you said it is means to me that a snaky bow really does'nt carry that much more mass weight than a straight stave bow.All variables being equal and all like MC & design etc.I've been making bows here monitoring my mass weight along in the process[I need all the help I can get LOL.]and it usually does come out according to mass principle in TTB4.Too heavy in mass means too much draw weight at intended draw length all things being equal or intended draw weight at intended draw length and too much mass weight means a much slower bow.[Hope I said that all right LOL]I've been making hunting bows with a little more draw weight and length of draw even though I don't trust myself to take a shot at a deer more than 20 yards. There seems to be a shot of 10 yards or so come along if I'm patient.LOL.I'm doing some white woods here. It's hard to beat old hedge that's for sure.Maybe I'm thinking wrong here but I just thought your bow might actually be longer like a river with all the snakes in it being longer than a straight line stretch of river covering the same distance.LOL.My thinking might be all messed up.I've done a couple of snake bows but not to the extreme your beauty is.You measured your length in a straight line I presume.Just the length of the string must be the determining factor here.Again beautiful bow Pappy!!Oh Roll Tide!!!
-
Yes I measure in a straight line. I see what you are saying about like a river, never really thought about it like that. :-\ Dean ,just what tenbrook said. PatB has a little tool that will help to do that also.I usually just free hand the center line ,then depending on how much snake and how close they are togeather will help decide
how close/or far apart I will draw my lines to measure side to side for the profile and how much I need to drop in fractions as I go down the limb to make it work out at the tip. What every you decide on one limb you have to do the same to the other, snake or no snake.. :) :) thanks coaster500 that is quite a complament. :) :)

Pappy asked me to post pics of this handy little tool for determining the center line down a snakey bow stave. I started off with Eric Krewson's Gizmo and to the back side I added two dowels and turned the pencil around. When making the stave you may have to cant the tool oneway then the other. This will give you two lines in some areas but if you split the difference it will get you pretty close to the center line of the stave.

Pappy, I think I gave you the one in the pic at last years Classic.
-
Wow - that is amazing! Looks more like a timber than a bow! Hard to believe :o
-
Wow thats very cool! Is it hard to come by these billets? I sure would like to get my hands on a couple billets like this but im sure they go fast when you find them :D.
Josh
-
I didn't say that right by saying center line. What I mean is you mark where your handle is going to be then measure the length of each limb following the snake or just measure straight across to the tips. If one limb has a few more little curves wouldn't that limb have more wood in it? Dean
-
Thanks Pat,A little hard to come by Josh. :) :) Dean I guess you would be right but I always just measure from center to tip/lay out and cut the profile as close as I can and let the tiller take care of all the rest. Until now never really thought about a snaky limb having more wood than a non snaky one. On another note I got the first coat of sealer on the back and handle last night, hope to have it ready for a grip by the weekend. I wished I had blacked the sides of the limb but it's to late now.It looks OK but I think would have looked better if I had blacked them, altho it does kind of favor a snake as it goes around toward the belly getting a little lighter. ;) :) :) This is the first one I have done the sides on,I usually just skin the back. :)
Pappy
-
WOW :o.
Pappy, you are MASTER!!! I like all your snake bows.

Yep I was working wood in the woods and not around the shop this past weekend. :-[
I was able to look at my Osage but not a bit of work got done. Now this Friday I might get something going I hope. Saturday may not be a bow building day either. After the Club meeting I believe Pappy will be once again cracking the whip in the woods getting firewood ready for the upcoming year, so the guests who need it around their firepit during the Classic and IBO Worlds will have enough.
-
This one is beyond even in your standards!
-
POOR ,POOR Jon. ;) :) :) man has to have fire, and yes we have to be ready for our guest . Thanks Soy/Frank appreciate that. Will you are welcome, sewing sure ant my thing.I got the belly finished /cleaned up and the writing done last night and plan on starting the sealing today, hopefull get it finished this weekend. :) :)
Like Jon said we have a meeting and working Sat. but still should be able to find some time for the bow,if not it's not like I don't have something to shoot or have been in a hurry to get it done. ;) It's name will say it all. :) :)
Pappy
-
all I can say is wow! A bow like that is the sign of a true craftsman
-
That's a beauty Pappy. Can't wait to see this one finished. God Bless
-
That is a great looking bow. That must have been real hard to tiller.
-
The man could tiller a stone I tell ya. O:)
-
Thanks guys, iowabow sometimes they are and you just have to be satisfied with
what you can get. Not always the prefect arch but shoot fine,if you can except that[some can some can't] then these are fun to make. :) :) :) Putting the sealer on now so should be finished soon. :)
