Title: Northwest NA arrow, something different

While researching the subject of using sinew for bow strings in wet climates I ran across this arrow example so thought I'd make me one for the collection....they are pretty cool.

These arrows come from southeastern Alaska to Western British Columbia and down into Oregon. The arrow is a cedar main shaft (barrell tapered), with a hardwood foreshaft and a small rankling steel arrowhead. The specimen was collected by G. Catlin and then given to the National Museum ( Otis Mason's report of 1893) He describes these types of arrows as having the smallest metal heads of any arrow in the world.

Anyways the first 2 pics are from the report, then some of the arrow in construction, and then the finished arrow. Just thought ya might like a look.

That's way cool, Rich.  What type of joint did you make between the cedar and hardwood?

Here are the other pics.

Also there are minor differences in mine as follows:
my arrow is 31-1/2 instead of 32"
the head of my arrow is set in pitch then sinew wrapped, original is just wrapped
my wrappings are covered w/ fish glue and the original not.

well done! like that arrow lots. have numerous tiny stone points(old ones) and have been wanting to make some replicas of historic nna arrows.

Good looking arrow Rich, pretty cool to see some of the arrows in those book come to life.

Thank you for the comments....Jonathan, the foreshaft is tapered into a round "pin" and inserted then wrapped with sinew. I put fish glue on it to try it out after reading the reports of weather tite stings and bow glue used in the area.
