Yesterday I decided to take advantage of having the day off and hit the woods. In a stand of osage I found a once in a lifetime single-trunked tree--pole straight, no knots, no limbs for nearly 8 feet. After topping the log I discovered the core had divided within the trunk at some point. Anyway, rather than trying to get 1 perfect 6 footer I choose the safe way and ended up with 4 54" billets and 4 40" billets. No complaints.

That's a nice haul!!! Good work..

There's nothing better than finding a nice osage tree. Looks like you got some good stuff there.
-
i dont know any thing about yeller wood...but,that looks like a great find and really clean wood...john

Nice osage there. It always amazes me how a straight tree on the outside is so crooked on the inside. I used to call 54" chunks billets, but now I call those staves and make bows from them. Make sure the ends are sealed good so they don't check bad.

You guys over there make me sick hahaha very nice looking billets they look really clean.

Well done! Jawge

They are nice nows the time to add a little deflex It's not hard. It's far easer and safer and way better than adding it by heat later. I'VE BEEN ADDING DEFLEX TO ALL MY STAVES FOR 12 YEARS THERES NO QUICKER OR EASER WAY. BLOWS HEATING AWAY.

Good, clean wood there. Take it when you can get it! I THINK I have more than I will ever need, but I will take all I can get until my wifey says "thats enough!"
-
Wow Pearl! More than you will ever need? Perhaps you can forward a stave or two to a northern boy ;)
-
Perhaps I could new guy........? You aint from these parts is ya'?

.... but I will take all I can get until my wifey says "thats enough!"
Nonsense, my wife said "That's enough" 15 years ago and it hasn't slowed me up a bit. 8) (She didn't mean it though....) ;)

No prob, as long as she doesn't have my home address... :) It's good we don't have a HOA here, I have osage all over the driveway and have for at least 2 years. :-[ My wife is a saint... ;D

Sounds familiar. a lot like my neighbor daves(DVS) yard. I get the bonus of the bowshop and the bowshop mess bein just across the street w/o all the mess.
-
Welcome Chris. Man, I wish I had a neighbor who wanted to build bows. :( The people who come and build with me drive further for some reason... I'm glad.

As a matter of fact, Pearl I am new to these parts :). I've worked with osage before and it is an absolute joy...despite a snap, crackle pop initially. So, what do ya say?
