Hi all,
Seems like forever since I've been on, what with life, the universe, and everything. That, and my head was in a bad place after breaking my favorite bow and the next two replacements! :o
Anyway, I'm back up and running, and thought I'd share my newest favorite tool of the day, a wood bodied plane. I made this up so I'd have something "authentic" looking to use in a renaissance fair demo, and while it passes the ten foot rule, it's not how you're supposed to make a plane. But, it works a treat, at least for shaving the tapers on a board. Cuts a bunch of time off the process! Have a look;

Looks really good to me. You made that tip nice and thin.

Thanks, George! They're close to a quarter inch wide, now, which is the final goal, after the tip overlays go on.

Heheh, well, like I said, it wasn't built right, but to see my initial inspiration, by someone who does make them right, go over to paleoplanet.net, in the "woodworking-hand tools" section, and scroll down until you find "Making a wooden handplane - tutorial" by a gentleman who goes by "Orien M". You'll find several other good plane making threads there too! Mine was literally slapped together at the last possible moment, but thanks for the kind words!

The video clip isn't incredibly educational for me because I have plenty of experience with planes. But the sound of the wood zzzzzzzziping off and the rhythm of the strokes was hypnotic, really zen like.
Did you guys realize that Billy Gibbons from ZZTop is one of our very own bowyers???

That was hickory you were reducing, right Frode? It sounds just like hickory in the video.
We often overlook the sounds that this hobby entails. The sweet sound of a drawknife riding the early wood over your growth ring of choice, the rip of silk as a high fletched arrow flashes to the target, the deep fump of an arrow striking the ribcage of a deer. Mmmm.

That comparison does get made, occasionally, but my favorite was the time a young 'un behind the counter at the local DQ said, "Dude, did you know you look just like (wait for it) Nostradamus?!" ;D
The wood was actually maple, btw, don't know what variety, just big box project wood. And you're right, it's amazing what you can hear and feel when the power tools are off.

I've madea few Krenov styles meself. I like the HNT Gordon type planes. The blade angle allows you to flip the blades over and they become scraping planes. I THINK it's a 55* cutting angle as I recall. His website is bigger now than when I used it to build mine. I use his cutting angle with the Krenov model.
