Title: Skinny Little Booger
Post by: johnston on October 28, 2011, 01:34:15 am
Had a little hand surgery earlier in the month and can't shoot with the brace but can piddle in the shop. Decided I could make a bow weak hand only but it didn't take long to find that a draw knife was out. Found this baby stave in the pile and figured I could use a rasp for it.

This is unknown wood. Meant to work on identifying it after it was cut but never got to it. Any how the stave had dippsy doodles with offsets to be straightened and it kept me going for a while. Rehab therapy. Pic's are real bad but posting this one is part of the fun.

Stats...51" Tip to tip pulls 37# at 24". Could not pull to full draw so am showing 22" on the tree cause i didn't take a pic at 24.. Turned out right good but like I said the pic's did not. Thanks for looking.

I appreciate the skill.  I have yet to be able to make a bow with 2 good hands.  Think I'll just stay with making arrows.  Good looking bow.

can't shoot with the brace but can piddle in the shop.

If you piddle in the shop, just sweep shavings over it.  Cedar's best, covers the smell too.   >:D

That's a nice looking branch bow, sounds like you did it in a hurry, too.  Might want to call it Rush Limb Bow.  (While you're at it, sweep some cedar shavings over that pun, too)

Thanks for all the nice comments. This was an interesting bow to make and I learned a lot mostly about
how I normally try to build bows. My goal has been to"get it built" instead of enjoying the process. Seems to me
that I took more steps and time with this one because the act of building it was the goal not the completion of it. Hmm.

Hey Rich, like I told you a while back, Went to the doc with my left hand so he cut on my right. Twice. And while I managed to build one it
ain't possible to shoot just yet. How the hell do you manage that trick? Must be tough or something.

Ken if I had your skill/talent ain't sure just what I would build.
Del, sounds like the voice of experience.
JW..one word..kittylitter.

Again folks, thank you for the nice comments.

Lane

The unknown wood that this bow is made from has been identified as Farkleberry, aka Sparkleberry....vaccinium arboreum.
Would reccomend it highly.

Thanks for the id help James(beetlebailey1977).

The full draw on the tree is very pleasing on the eye.  :)

  Johnston,
Nice bow, never thought of sprakleberry. If I remember correctly it's very dense slow growing tight ringed. I've cut it "trimmed " it while hunting and camping in Sparkleberry Swamp here in Sumter, S.Carolina. Tiller is nice. Next trip I will be looking for a couple of pieces.
