Title: Headin' out! *updated pics*
Post by: PEARL DRUMS on October 24, 2011, 11:47:59 am
My bestest friend in the world and I are heading to Madison, Indiana for a 5 day deer hunt Wednesday morning with a farmer friend, cant wait! This will be my first out of state deer hunt and I cant hardly sleep at night. We have 620 acres for the 3 of us to hunt, all to ourselves. My farmer buddy has been eyeballing a few nice bucks so far. The bonus of all this is the fact he is COVERED in osage down there and said he would be more than happy to cut down whatever trees I want and as many as I want................WHOA! Sounds like a lifetime supply of hedge to me. I am hauling my covered wagon down to load up! My goal is 50-60 staves worth. That alone will be worth the price of admission.  ;)

Two Tracks Chuck and I splitting a few logs Wednesday. I wouldnt even want to attempt it without some help. Most of the logs have 1/4" or thicker rings with almost invisible early growth. I would dare call them premium osage logs/staves. ;D

  AWESOME
Split up your time scouting (glassing if possable) and hunting. I'm a big fan of scouting from afar. IT WILL PAY OF IN THE LONG RUN. I never just hunt blindly or maybe the land owner can point you in the right direction. Spend those first scouting days use the mid day to cutting Osage.
Can't go wrong with INDIANA and big bucks. I'd be sleepless also. GOOD LUCK with the hunting and OSAGE.

Man... That sounds like one Heck of a Hunt!

A certain ZZTop song comes to mind,  "Dirty Dog"!   8)

Sharpen and deburr your splitting wedges and make sure you take plenty of Advil and Icy Hot along for the Wood Work!!!
I have to say, as much of my blood as has been drawn by Bodarc, I do love me some Yeller Wood!

Oh Yeah, and make sure your skinnin' knives are sharp and your camera batteries are charged!!!
Take plenty of photos for those of us going through hunting withdrawls.

Whack em and stack em!
Hope you stick a Purdy Buck!

Safe Journey!

NOOOO!  These guys are steering you wrong!  Forget to bring your camera and conspire to lose your skinning knife the very first morning.  It's the only way to guarantee getting a huge buck!  They can smell when you are ready for them!

This advice will only cost you one osage stave, please.

Good luck PD.  Make sure the tires and springs on that trailer are in good shape.  A years supply of green osage will flatten the tires on most trailers.  Hopefully the sap is down on the trees up there already and they'll be a little lighter for you.

George the tires and spring are new.........plus I have a big-bad Dodge Ram with an empty box to fill up with logs. I told my buddy our return trip will be a touch slower. We will be mindful and safe with a touch of greed!

That sounds like an amazing trip. Worst case scenario you come back with a bunch of yeller wood. Good luck with the hunt!

Im back. No deer, matter of fact DAMN hard hunting in those foothills of Kentucky. Not many deer at all, but we did see 3 very nice bucks over 4 days. The best part was I met some wonderful hillbilly friends down yonder that teased me about my accent eh'? The farm was absolutely covered in hedge. I have never seen anything like it. There were literally tens of thousands of saplings, bushes and trees growing anywhere I looked. I took 14 premium logs and billet logs home with me, the truck and trailer are a touch sqawty. Some have almost 3/8" rings, most are 1/4" or better. It was a GREAT trip with great people involved. The lack of deer didnt bother me much. One more thing, HILLS, HILLS, HILLS, HILLS, HILLS! WOW! You cant even walk up most of the hills on his ground. We drove to the top and hunted the fingers that extended out everywhere.  We where about 4 miles from Kentucky. They called it Kentuckyana on the TV news.

Sounds like a Great Trip P.D.!

Sorry you didn't bring home some Venison.
But it sounds like you hit the Yella Jackpot!
And new Friends are a blessing...

What, they don't have hills up north?  Sorry you didn't kill anything.  Now, how about some pictures of that osage haul.

Those things werent hills man! They were mini-mountains with loose stone all over the place. It was a real treat watching the sun rise and set over valleys several miles wide. Very cool exprience. I have the logs piled up on skids. Tomorrow I have a buddy coming over to help move the splitting along. My guess is around 50-60 staves. I snagged a big, dead straight 12" locust log too, couldnt resist!

Maybe if you got some scraps left over you could have have one of the wood turners in here make you a pair of osage drumsticks!

Not sure how to tiller a drumstick, though.  Maybe you'd fletch it.

Good luck buddy and keep me informed on how the rest of your season goes.

Its my buddy Joe Dempler! I knew you would come around pal. I have 6 of the hedge logs split and Im up to 32 staves so far. Some of them could probably be split again easily. Looks like my conservative estimate of 40-50 staves may have been light. I will get some pics up after this mornings hunt, gotta go!

It was all the trip I could have asked for Guy. It was safe, fun and I met some GREAT people down there. Its always a good feeling meeting people farther away from home that are good people, reassuring is the word I guess. The world really is full of good people, its just the bad ones get all the publicity!

By the way I used deck stain to seal the ends and it almost has a rubbery feel to it. I think its going to work great and cost less than urethanes do. Give it a try if you have some leftover stain in the garage.

I wondered about deck stain as a sealant, but wasn't sure what all it had in it.  I didn't know if it would actually seal the wood.  Let me know how it works.

Clint I figured if I trust it to seal my deck from 14" of snow and ice it has to be able to seal osage ends stored in a dry basement. I dipped the whole end right into the can and let it dry for a few hours, then did the other end and stood it on end allowing the sealer to flow down into the end pores. Im thinking its fool proof...............

FINALLY! I was able to get all my 14 logs split up. I count just over 60 1/4 log's. Over half of them will get split again. Im guessing the total may get towards one hundred easily. There are plenty of belly splits not counted as well. I think Im good for the next 10-12 years!

That long dude on the top is a 3 yr old hackberry 1/4. Thats a monster with at least 2-3 bows in it. The pic is a bit deceiving. Those staves are all 80" or well over that. Except for the sister billets of course. And NO I dont use that electric weed wacker, my wife bought it second hand because it was "cute".

Pearl Drums its looking more and more like you need an Apprentice or two... :)

It was the Apprentice's job in the Olden Daze to keep the master well supplied with quality materials.
There by learning the trade and facilitating the overall health of the business.

If I was a younger man and without my own Apprentices (in Life in any event) I would volunteer!
(Will Work for Food... and a Bow Stave or Two!)

Nice Pile of Future Bows you have there Sir!

Thats a great pile of what looks like premo wood! Too bad no deer but its more about the hunt for me and just being out there in nature. Looks like a great harvest to me meat or no meat!
