At last years Classic Gary Davis walked up to me and handed this short stave to me. He said he wanted to see what I could do with it. It was obviously meant to be a kids bow as Gary had it marked with "35#". When I saw it I immediately thought short sinew backed bow. She is about 53"t/t, 1 1/8" wide at the widest and a little bit of snakey character.
The stave was straight limbed with some backset in it as is the usual with Gary's staves. I added the reflexed tips and did a little tillering but it didn't need much.
I began sinew backing it about a month ago. As of now I have put down 2 layers, the first one from the salvaged sinew from my last failed "Elkie" sinew attempt and just the other day I added about 3 or 4 back sinews worth of sinew.. Before adding any sinew A put in about 5"+ of backset by placing the tips up on blocks and drawing the handle down , using a sinew loop and a small cup hook. I figured the sinew loop wood blend in with the rest of the sinew when it was time to take it off the form and I cut off the loop. I will let the sinew cure for a month or so then complete the tillering. I plan to cover the sinew back with snake skin and add tip overlays and a handle wrap to purty her up some. So, here she is as of now...

Looking sweeeet pat. I like how your adding the reflex with the sinew loop. Never seen that one before. Where did ya learn that neat trick?
Can't wait to see her all finished up and how much reflex you hold. :)
-
I tried to figure how to hold the handle down. If I used string it might not adhere where the sinew goes over it so I tried the sinew loop and it seems to work good. The sinew in the loop will become part of the sinew/glue matrix when all said and done and the rest of the loop will be removed.
After I added the first sinew the loop got less tought as the sinew dried. It is pretty tight again now but should loosen a bit as the sinew backing draws the bow into backset.
-
Bet it will be a fast shooter, like to see her when you get her done
-
I'm sure you will get to see her next spring either at the Classic or at Hickory, Yeti.
-
nice!
-
I'm looking forward to seeing how this bow turns out. Are you going to let it bend through the handle?
-
Gordon, it should bend through the handle a bit at full draw if all works out right.
-
Looking forward to this one Pat, keep us posted.
-
I will Steve. I'm looking forward to it too! ;D
-
I thought about doing that same thing Pat to pull one into reflex while sinewing. I need to finish up sinewing my Juniper bow and I think I will do it like you did here.
Look forward to seeing this little shortie at full draw.
Stiks
-
this some thing i have been waiting for...i have some short osage..and wanted to see how much of thickness the handle should be...thanks for sharing pat....john
-
Lookin good Pat. What kind of skins are you thinking about using? I can't wait to see what you are able to do with that snakey osage stave.
-
Clint, that's a ways down the road but I have a few skins to choose from. I'll let the near finished bow decide what she likes best in the wardrobe dept. ;) You've got enough osage now to make about 1000 of these little bows. ;D
-
That is looking perfect Pat. I'm loving sinew backed bows more and more these days. I have a couple that are about ready for the same treatment. There is just something about the feel of a short sinew bow that screams "Shoot me" Looking forward to seeing her finished.
-
I am really lookin' forward to seeing this one finished Pat. It ought to be a rocket launcher.Keep us posted. God bless
-
Nice Pat. I'm a real fan of the shorties, especially sinew backed. Looking forward to the decorated bow! Your method of tying the bow into reflex using a sinew tie, is the same that I do. It just makes sense. Great job so far. I intend to be at the Classic this next year and will certainly bring my shorties!
-
Pat I use rachet straps to add my reflex. I 've found the 2 or 3 inchs of reflex I'll keep and inch of reflex. But that is short plus as you know your sinew will add some also. It should be a fast shooter.
-
Nice Pat. I'm glad you're tillering that one. Short reflexed bows are a challenge for me, easy to miss weight. I'm anxious to see how you finish her up, should be a nice bow.
George
-
Pat have you got a weight you're shooting for or is it too early to tell?
Lane
-
Pat that little bow is looking sweet.. Gonna be cheering you on 8)
Cipriano
-
Lane, I'm looking for about 50#@26" but we'll see! ::)
MWirwicki, I'll have this bow at the Classic too. I have to show Gary Davis what I did with it. ;D
Thanks everyone. I've wanted to build one of these short sinew backed osages for a while and when Gary gave the stave to me it was my first thought.
-
Pat
Good start there !
It amazes me how folks seem to come up with similar processes looks just like the way Gary does them !
Matt and Old Timber plan on dragging this beat up old body of mine to the classic so we shall meet then if the good Lord is willing !
Take care
Guy
-
Guy...ill make sure matt n Marty drag ya down there >:D
I should be there myself if all works out.
Pat...my vote is for copperheads if she pans out to be a great lil bow. :)....I got a copperhead waiting to go on a D/R sinewed Osage shorty if all goes well. A perfect skin n wood combo IMHO
-
Blackhawk, I just happen to have a set of copperheads that Cipriano sent me not long ago. ;D
Guy, looking forward to meeting you at the Classic. I'll have this bow with me to show Gary. Maybe he'll give me another stave. ;)
-
Ingenious using the sinew loop!
-
Great teaser shots, can't wait.
-
Looking good! The sinew loop is genius. As usual, the simplest solution is the best solution. Thanks for sharing that tip! Josh
-
this really makes me want to try a sinew backed short bow, almost as much as i want to make warbows...... almost ::)
noel
-
Can't wait to see this one finished!
-
I took this bow off the form yesterday to see how the reflex was holding and to give the sinew job a close examination. I'm glad I did because there were some small voids along the edge on the far side. At some point I will add a bit more sinew on the sides of the bow towards the back to fill in the voids and to insure the sinew doesn't lift.
I don't thing there will be an issue of not making weight. I bent the bow a little and it seems pretty stiff.
-
Now Pat don't you be going and rushing things ya ol dog. It's only been two days curring! Thats the biggest challenge for me is being patient enough and giving plenty of drying time. Sounds like she is doing good ;)
-
Keenan, I'll be off work tomorrow due to rain so I plan to do the final sinewing along the sides of the limbs at the backing. After that I can forget it for a month or so then start retillering. The air here is drying as winter approaches and our wood stove sucks most of the moisture out of the air even with a pot of water on top so it should be pretty dry by then. I know it will cure more over time but it should be OK to work by then. The backstrap sinew sure lays flatter and smoother than leg sinews. ;)
-
Thats about the scenario here as well. Still prepping sinew for mine. wood stove in house and in shop. Great for drying! Also getting ready to put some skins on that bow you made for Lulyn.
-
I'm chomping at the bit to see that bow again after you added your magic. 8) ...and it's only a year late! ::)
-
After another month of drying I took her off the form. She held almost 5" of backset. I began tillering her the other day and got to a point where I felt comfortable shooting her. I put about 2 dozen arrows through her and she did well especially since the arrows weren't set up for this bow. I left her braced for about 3 hours after shooting. When I unbraced her she laid flat and after a while had 1" of backset. Her limbs have very quick recovery.
Yesterday I added Am. bison horn(from Justin Snyder) overlays and shaped the tips. Today I added coachwhip snake skin that Cipriano sent me. I used hide glue for the skins and this is a first for me. So far I like it. I did use TBIII on the horn overlays but other than that everything is natural.
Here are a few tease shots for ya! ;)

-
Oh my, that is going to be a nice one Pat. Can't wait to see her all detailed out. ;)
-
Yea Keenan. She's gonna be nice!!! 8) I'll wait another few weeks before stressing her again. Give the moisture from the hide glue time to evaporate.
-
Wow. 8) She's definitely gonna be a looker as well as a performer! Nice work can't wait to see her finished! :)
-
Looks super Pat. That snakeskin suits that bow to a tee.
George
-
I'm lookin forward to seein her!
-
That's looking sweet Pat.
-
that is going to be a great little shooter...i think it would be a good one for turkey hunting....john
-
That's gonna be a pretty one, Pat.
-
Turned out nice, Pat! I really like that style of bow. I've made a few and one think I've found... You're not gonna want to put it down.
Cheers to ya!
-
Looking good Pat, never seen those type of skins before(very cool). can't wait for the full draw.
-
Got to see that SHORTY put to work!!!
Really sweet bow Pat, can't wait to see the whole thing :)
-
Pat,
That bow is looking sweet. That skin looks great on that bow.. Can't wait to see the rest of it and I sure hope you enter it in BOM ;)
Funny story about that snake skin. One Sunday afternoon Diego and I were at our monthly Iron Men get together at church. My friend Pat rolled in on his Harly and said, "there's a snake on the shoulder on the other side of Bluff Dale. I would have picked it up for you, but I'm on my bike and didn't have anywhere to put it."
Well... Diego and I skinned out of there early and headed up we road and some how it ended up on a bow in NC 8) Kind of neat if you ask me...

That Baby is looking good Pat,should be a shooter. Can't wait to see it all finished up. :) :)
Pappy

Now thats a mighty fine piece of work. I'm like-in it a lot!
-
That's a good lookin bow, Pat!
-
Nice bow,Pat. Appreciate all the pics. I still have an Osage bow from Mr. Davis that i need to finish.
-
Looking good Pat! glad to know your gonna have that at the classic. Have you worked any of the wood I brought you last spring?
I been thinking about shucking one of those sister staves of the two that you and Keenan have. ;D
Hope you had a good Thanksgiving bud and I can't wait to see that bow done.
Stiks
-
Well, I got her almost finished...
53"t/t, sinew backed osage(stave from Gary Davis), 52#@26", 13.5 oz mass weight, choachwhip snake skin from Cipriano over sinew backing(heavy course of leg sinew and 4 pieces of shreaded back sinew) , Am. bison horn overlays from Justin Snyder, hemp cordage handle wrap set in Massey finish, Ferret's floppy rest, 4 layers of Tru-Oil and 3 of satin poly.
This little bow is a shooter! I made a silky dogwood arrow that weighs in at 508gr(with 125gr point)and she really zips that arrow. Shoots my hill cane and tapered ash hunting arrows(650gr+) pretty well too even though they are a bit stiff for her.
I am real pleased with how this bow came out. She holds about 3/4" of reflex immediately after unbracing and a bit more after resting. Here are a few preliminary pics. Will get full draw pic later today. Enjoy...

Wow Pat that baby came out sweet! I love the color of the snake skins and the way you left the tips natural. Great looking bow!

-
Not to shabby not to shabby... >:DLol... That thing is a work of art pat.... Definitely an inspiration. Thanks for sharing.
Jon
-
Wow Pat, that bow turned out excellent. I've been thinking about making a short sinew backed bow. That little beauty just made that decision a lot easier.
-
Remember when Madden was announcing football and he would go, "BOOM!"?
Well I say BOM!
Very fine shorty and love all the details. I've recently been stuck in a long longbow rut, thanks for the push the other way.
-
That bow looks perfect.
Can't wait to see the money shot.
-
nice looking bow...well made,, looks light in the hand and fast...
-
That is one sharp looking bow Pat. I'm sure Gary will be suprised with what you were able to make out of that stave. Well done.

George
-
Yes sir!! requirements satisfied....
I'd hunt that bow anytime :)
-
Thanks guys. Her bends are not as smooth as I would have liked but she will do fine as she is.
George, I think her name will be "Sweetie". Someone else used that adjective to describe her too.
-
A beauty of a bow Pat. very nice work on the whole thing.
-
Very nice Pat! Thats one sweet lil bow you got there! Congrats :) :) :)
-
Well Pat, she's a beauty (or should I say, Sweetie)! Very nicely done. I'll bet she's snappy. It's obvious you took your time on that one. Time in my opinion, makes the best bows. Good on ya!
-
Man Pat that sure is a nice looking bow! Sure wish I could shoot that thing!
Josh
-
not shure if the deer will think she's all that sweet, but I do, great looking bow Pat, Bub
-
Thanks for the kind words everyone.
Matt, you are right, it is time that makes good bows. ;)

-
Sweet bow Mr Pat!
-
Thank you for sharing your work with us Pat! This bow is a work of art. Keep sharing, I've learned a lot from seeing your work and reading your posts!
-
that is a sweet heart of a bow...for me it has turkey hunting writen all over it...great work again...john
-
SWEET! That came out real nice, Pat. The skins, curves, and tiller says it all. Now I'm inspired to grow a beard like yours so I have an endless supply of string silencers, too. :D
-
Now I'm inspired to grow a beard like yours so I have an endless supply of string silencers, too. :D
another reason for me to grow one ;D
-
Thanks.
Cipriano, your coachwhip sure dresses her up. So far my favorite snake skin backing.
James and Yeti, we have to get a bidding war going! ;D
Ken, yea, right! You're a novise. ::)
Strongbow, its called showing off. ;D I enjoy the sharing as much as building them !
Eddie, I wouldn't trust my beard to be a string silencer but those lambskin fleece silencers are the best. Art turned me on to them.
John, I guess I'm gonna have to start turkey hunting. Never done it before.
Again, thank you everyone.
-
Thats a nice bend for sure, those skins really top it off--nice work-.Do you like how those short ones pull and shoot compared to you longer bows you made in the past, nice work--Hammertime
-
This is my shortest that pulls 26" so far. It shoots real good too. ;D
When I dropped down to a 60" static recurve(from 64" to 66" straight limb bows) it took me forever before I could shoot it with confidence. This bow however was easy to shoot right off. ;)
Now when I go back to 64" or 66" bows it almost feels like I'm cheating. ;D The stability of a longer bow is a given. Learning to shoot these shorter bows has been a real lesson for me. In tight hunting situations I can see where these shorties can really be the trick.
-
Fantastic bow, really impressive!
-
great job on that one Pat. I like everything about it. You put a lot of time into that short piece of wood and it shows.
You're right about the shorter bows. Its amazing how much better they make you shoot the longer ones :)
-
Nice Job. The coachwhip skins look great.
-
Good deal Pat ;) It is an interesting snake. All the folks that got one of those really liked em.. I will remember that it's your favorite for next year when they creepy crawlers come out again 8)
Cipriano
-
Beautiful bow Pat,very well done in all aspects. :) :) :)
Pappy
-
Pat,
Super nice and love the skins, they are unique, never saw a coachwhip. Nice string angle comming of those tips also, bet she's smooooth on the draw all the way back. Really nice...
Don
-
Super nice job on that lil baby Pat! ;)
-
Nice Bow! Good job!
-
WOW Pat....... :o
-
Thanks guys. She's really a sweet shooter too and once I get the proper set of arrows she'll be deadly! ;)
-
Pat, I have not been on line much but still don't see how I missed this one. you had said you were working on her but I have not seen the thread till now. Beautiful bow as always, you sure do nice work. I wish you much enjoyment with this bow. Kenneth
-
Kenneth, the first layer of sinew on this bow came from Elkie. After the sinew popped off the last time I peeled it all off, soaked it in water to seperate it and set it out to dry as induvidual strands. When I was ready to sinew this bow I rehydrated the sinew and glued it down. When that dried for a month I added 4 shreaded backstrap sinews over the first layer. She's my shortest bow for my draw I have built and she's a real shooter. Might even make an elk bow out of her! ;)
Looks like you guys dodged the bullet with the blizzard that started out there the other day. 8)
-
Pat-that bow is amazing. Thanks for posting and the pics.
-
Pat that tiller looks perfect! I had to come back, for another look at those skins, and saw the full draw pic. You really got a keeper there. What you said about the shorties is so true. They can be like a high spirited filly sometimes, and you can end up in the ditch if not carefull. But once you get confident and used to them the longer bows feel like cheating. Congratulations on a great bow!
