Folks,
Last fall I went to a local saw mill and brought home about $100 worth of a red elm. Attached are a few pics of a stave I just started working on tonight. The stave at this point is 1 3/4" wide and 70" long. If I chase the ring I want my final backing will be about 1 1/2" wide and I'm not sure if that's enough or not. I hope you can see the rings I marked.

Blurry pictures. :o

I am a beginner but with 70"s to play with I'd personally would go for it..... Just be carful not to miss the ring like I did on my first almost lost the bow :o
Did end up with a bunch of great smoked tuna from that bow though !!

Yeah sorry the pics are soooo blurry. I realized after posting that clarity was an issue but though the rings were distinguished enough to see what I was shooting for. My idea chase the final ring of sap wood. If I make a mistake I still have the first ring of heart wood to follow. Is 1 1/2" enough for a red elm bow?

It depends on what draw length, bow length, and weight your shooting for.
If your making a 28" draw bow then leave it the full 70" and your mentioned width will be fine.

My preference is 65lbs@ 28"

your plan sounds fine to me rings are big enough you should be good. with that length you can pike if you come in low

Try using the "Macro" setting (usually a flower icon) to get those close-up pics. Good luck with the elm!

Focus the camera or maybe you got it too close to the wood. Can't see the rings.
