Just wanted to let you all know that I will be on a show called I, Caveman, which airs on the Discovery this Sunday, Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. Eastern time! Check local listings to see what time it airs in your region. This show is part of a new series called Curiosity, so in TV guides it will say "Curiosity", but the name of the show is called I, Caveman. So don't let that throw you.
In this show 10 people (of which I am one) abandon our modern world to see if we have the mental and physical toughness to survive like stone age people did 20,000 years ago. Filmed in Northwestern Colorado, this show will break new ground and although I can't reveal any details about what happens, let's just say you don't want to miss it!!
Here is the link to the ad that was posted on youtube. You can see me in several of the clips, and they use my voice in part of the ad!!!!

You'll probably find it here after its aired:

i saw the commercial for it and i will definitely watch it. not to sound critical, but the guy producing the thing said it was to find out if people were better off back then. one obvious disadvantage that you all will have is that those people were masters of their environment, so it's not really a fair assessment. but i have to say it would be a blast to take part in!

I agree with you jimmy. Not only were they masters of their environment, their bodies had adapted to that way of living. We've gone soft since then
-
Any of you technologically advanced folkes have the ability to copy this to a disc? No discovery channel here. I'm sure I can find something to trade.
-
It'll depend on whether they protect it. Some stuff we can record off the DVR, and some we can't. I can give it a try and let you know.
George
-
That's all I can ask for. Thanks
-
Just checked the local T.V. guild (Maryland). I, Caveman is a 2-part show. Both hour long segments are to be aired at 8:00 and 9:00. Looking forward to it.
-
It's on now in Texas.
George

It was a good show, billy bringing the knapping skills ;) an d I bet that elk never tasted sooo good !way to go! !!
-
Great show!! Great job Billy!!
-
I just saw the show. Awesome! Makes me wish I could have been there. I can't believe you guys got an elk....just unbelievable. I love how you and the others showed so much respect for that animal...... He took care of you. Amazing.
-
just watched all so...i had to send billy a pm about it...it was great opening the doors of the past...i really wish there was more shows like it...john
-
why did i have to have homework >:(
good thing i have a dvr ;D ;D ;D ;D

I enjoyed it a lot. I'd have been curious to see how they would have butchered that elk had you not been there Billy. Impressive butchering with those flakes and really impressive to see you haul that heavy quarter back to camp after so little food for 8 days. Good work. Now, how bout the rest of the stories that didn't get televised... ;)
George
-
I think if Billy was not there they would not have made it. I really enjoyed that!! 8)
-
billy, you did good. this type of show is so much better than Survivor or a few others that come to mind. no agenda, no competition, just doing as good as you can with what you're given. i can't figuire out why those girls would sign on for that if they did not want to eat an animal. they sure didn't mind wearing an animal's skins.
-
Watched it last night. Throughly enjoyed it. Way to go, Billy! :D
-
Good job Billy really enjoyed the show. :)
-
WAY COOL
I know 4 that would have been kicked out of my clad. THE BALD GUY AND 3 FO THE WOMEN talk about not helping out.
I watched it twice.
-
My thoughts on the animal thing. All I could think was where did they think meat came from before? My favorite line was "an animal had to die so we could eat". The chickens, cows, pigs, and the list goes on all died before they made it to the grocery store. The most interesting part to me was how they had such a connection to the animal they killed in relationship to the modern mindset of what meat "is". Don't get me wrong I think this was great! maybe people will be more careful about wasting food if they had a better understanding of what meat is and how it is connection to life. This program was not just about what it was like back then but really dimonsrated a disconnect of modern people to the mindset of the paleo past. I grew up with game at dinner as part of everyday, life like many on this website, so I found their responses very interesting. Billy responded to them just the way I would have, he said in a very matter of fact way "we had to eat" way to go Billy! those were the same words that were coming out of my mouth at the same time.
-
I got home late and totally missed the first airing. I managed to stay up long enough to catch the 2nd airing of the first episode, but by then it was midnight and I needed to go to sleep. Billy did a great job from what I've seen so far. Anybody have an idea of when it will re-air so I can possibly catch the whole thing?
-
SWEET show. loved it
-
just shove a stick in it's mouth, that was a great line, Bub
-
i watched the show last night , and thought it was great. makes you wonder how you would cut it given the same situation. wish they would have given more air time to Billy and shown more knappin. the one thing i was curious about was the elk watching a group of hunters throw darts at them ,i have no experience with the critters just found it odd they weren't hunting some yonder
way to go Billy
-
Good job Billy. It looked like you were the only one who knew what they were doing.

I agree it was a very good show....I to wondered about the elk just standing there. And at the end they showed a clip butchering the elk and the other elk were just grazing in the background. It amazes me how some people think that meat is not a dead animal of some sort....it had to be killed sometime.
-
Great show, I really enjoyed it. The water filter made from charcoal was very cool. Several members brought a lot to the show. The black haired girl, that was hating the cold, really made some interesting "spiritual" changes as the days progressed. Couple more weeks I think she would have passed on cooking and started eating meat raw.
Knapping and hunting is not new to Billy, but he kept a positive and supportive attitude for the entire show, well done dude!
Not sure how the group was chosen, but it did not appear that survival skills and outdoor experience was on the top of the list, so I am not surprised a few knowledgeable ones took the lead.
I would have liked to have seen a bow and arrows (like Otzi's) introduced instead of the atlatl, but I'm not the producer... :D
It was awesome to see an elk taken with the atlatl. Amazing how lethal that hit was.
Wonder if anything else in is the works??
-
I thick the time line they were working on was pre bow, and they were trying to stay as accurate as possible, Bub
-
I thought the same thing about the Elk. Two threads were started on another forum and were closed. The game animals are represented as wild but certainly seem farm raised. I cant stand canned hunts so I hope Billy will clarify if these are wild animals and not cows with no fear. It seems totally unatural they way they behaved. Also the kill shot showed a dart barely hanging from the neck. Then they stuck two darts in at point blank range and it appears penetration was weak. Did the atlatal bring the elk down? I dont know but would like to. I may be wrong and if I am I apoligize but it appears to be a fake reality show.
Jeff
-
Yea I've never been hunting myself but I do understand wild herd behavior a bit and that did seem a little suspicious... otherwise I loved watching that. Couldn't catch all of the second part of the show though.
-
I walked up to a deer on Sunday got within 80 he looked at me the whole time. Totally posuble with a herd that has little pressue.
-
winning the lottery is possible, being in the full open slinging darts at elk ( in velvet ?) and them hanging around, odds are with the lottery.
-
I thought the show was very good. I cannot stand the so called reality shows that are bombarding cable now, so I rarely watch TV. If this were a longer series, I would watch it for sure. I thought Billy did a great job of keeping a positive mental attitude which effects the attitudes of most of the group. Some people you just cant help! My family and I were waiting for them to introduce Billy at the beginning of the show because I was not sure who he was. Since our last name is Berger, my youngest was looking for one of her uncles or at least someone she new. After the intro, my family quickly informed me that we were no way related because the gentlemen that was introduced as Billy Berger was the size of Arnold ;), and I was definitely not. ::)
Great job on the show Billy!! Please let us know if they have any future shows planned.
David

8) Good job Billy,Well done. >:D

who here agrees, that billy would be a good candidate for a primitive survival show, one showing how to live primitively, not just until you can get rescued like all the ones now
noel
-
I did see a disclaimer that stated assistance was provided to be sure no animal suffered unduly.
-
Fishfinder
I also think they should make a primitive living show not just a survival short term show. They also need hunting shows which use self bows and other primitive equipment. Hunting shows get pretty boring when all they use is high powered rifles and compounds. The primitive shows could also show the making of the equipment.
-
It'll depend on whether they protect it. Some stuff we can record off the DVR, and some we can't. I can give it a try and let you know.
I didn't have any problem recording the 2 shows onto a DVD. Madcrow, if you still want to see it PM me your address I'll send it to you.
George
-
I saw the same thing Jim saw, assistance provided in taking an animal. It seem pretty obvious that the elk had never been hunted or it was a big, free range elk farm. I think that as soon as an elk was stuck that it was dropped with either a Tranquilizer dart to be finished off by the atlatl's or a real gun. It still made for a good show.
-
I agree with you Eddie. Very good show. Maybe Billy will clear it up with some info.
-
Billy probably can not say too much ???
-
Billy probably can not say too much ???
I agree. If I walk out to the pasture a nock a cow in the head with a rock and put it on t.v. I can declare myself capable of surviving a primitive lifestyle. More fuel for the anti's.
-
Hey really... farm or no farm to hit an elk from that distance was cool.
-
tame or wild, i think we might be selling the shot a bit short. while i think the shot was 1 in a 1,000,000, no one could have stuck the bull in a better place to bring it down concidering the fellows skill level. i'll take luck over skill any day when it comes to surviving! as to the other aspects of the show, the "experts" predict that millions if not hundreds of millions of people will starve if or when our civilization callapes due to plague or nuclear holocast because they won't have the stomach to eat what would need to be eaten to survive. i think this show proved that beyound a doubt. also, all that laying about by the lazy ones, would not be tolerated long in a true survival situation. one of them may find themselves on the grill. i almost fell out of my chair when the fellow said i'm not sleeping with any of them, why should i feed them. makes you wonder where the true motivation was for paleoman. the only part about the show that left me wondering was when the fellow said he had only eaten seven fish all week. with all the miles of stream that had to be around, if there was seven trout there had to be a couple hundred more. i myself like the taste of baked trout and would hunt the hell out of them. i did think a couple of times what the show would have been like if they also would have included james parker in the mix? would have made a heck of a docu/comedy for sure.

I have to agree except for the last sentence, Hollywood likes good looking stars. 8)

Darn it, guess that counts a bunch of us out,LOL :o

I think a really good place to shoot a movie about pale life would be at twin oaks with people who can demonstration the years of knowledge they have learned about paleolithic skills. Just reading the post "life is good" is so entertaining. There is so much going on in that camp almost everyday it is like a trade school for Paleolithic man. I read about tanning, cooking, crafting, art, and the list goes on and on. Each week could cover a different topic and then one could see how each item was used. If it were me I would not let hollywood add all the drama BS but rather let the drama be about critical moments in building a bow , arrowheads or hunting scenes where a hunter has a dilemma and then the results and final out comes of those decisions. All of the hands on learning from one generation to the next is a great story in and of its self.
-
The heck with the movie, Pappy and the Gang could make a bunch of video's ;D
-
Ok make me down for season 1.
-
Season one it is. :) :) Production begins next week. :) Very low budget film. ;) ;D ;D and I mean very low budget. :) :)
Pappy

Oh Lord I can see it now Pappy running around in a loin cloth with a club in his hand. ;D :o >:D

A video on brain tanning would be cool!
-
are you actually going to do this, because that would be amazing ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

This just aired here last night, great show. I thought it was kinda funny that a show about paleo survival was sponsored by Intel :D
My reactions were similar to others - I was surprised that the "cold feet" lady did as well as she did. Looked like she was the first one to provide meat by catching trout, and she did well with the atlatl.
It was nice to see the respect that was paid to the elk, but I also wonder about the mentality of some of those people that refused to eat it because of guilt. Those same people probably have no problem eating beef, chicken, etc. on a daily basis. Just because someone else kills the animal for them, that seems to make it ok to eat... ::)
-
I have to wonder what would become of the lazies who sat around the fire and did nothing. I suspece that in actual paleo times they might have been left out to starve. They most likely operated on the if a person does not work then niether should they eat rule. Ron
P.S. Pappy inspite of joking about the club I really would love to see a video on brain tanning. Ron
-
A Friend of mine in Madison Fla. had a Grandfather who built a log cabin on the Withlachootchie river, and in the kitchen, is a little plaque that says, " Them that work, eats." ;)

Finally just got to see the second half. I enjoyed it very much! I second Mechslasher, I about fell over when the guy made the comment about not sleeping with them so why should I feed them. Guess it doesn't take long for PC to go out the window when the going gets tough. Hysterical! Very interesting though that the guy called it quits.
The elk kill was as good a hunting scene as I've ever witnessed on TV. To be able to hear it breathing it's last breaths was intense and to see the animals eyes brought it home to me. I felt like I could identify with it based on my experience.
Just gotta say how much I enjoyed it. My hat is off to you, Billy.
-
Ronnie, when it comes to the lazies, that might just be a small glimpse of society. Not everybody is a hunter, some might have to gather firewood, butcher, take care of the fire, or be a prostitute to be worth their time for the rest of the group to feed.
-
I can easily picture the camp in late winter when supplies of the last bountiful season are shrivelling up a little too fast. The elder that really has the touch for knapping makes a couple extra good points for the hunters. Auntie pulls out some hides she was saving and made a warm coat for her nephew going on his first extended hunt. Everyone took a little of their pot each evening to share with the young hunters to make sure they were well fed and strong. I really doubt the all for one and one for all concept sprung brand new from the mind of the Three Musketeers author. I hope those watching identify more with those that busted a hump for the good of all.
-
I watched it, that was really cool! How do you get the opportunity to do something like that? What i wouldn't do for a chance. Did it just drop in your lap, did you apply, a friend/connection, or was it your shin-dig? Anyhow I really appreciate watching things like this. Really gets my flame lit. Thanks for the heads up!

Eddie
I see you're point I think I was commenting on this one certain individual that seemed to have the recipient mentality. I doubt that this existed in those long gone days the concept of society owing a living to anyone probably did not exist. The thought of starvation or being exiled was probably a strong incentive to get up off ones backside and get busy. As far as the prostitute that might be an incentive to be a better hunter, more dead critters equals more girlfriends. Ron
-
To keep this kid friendly I think the women are not portrayed correctly in this video. Where are the children? how about all the activities like weaving and processing of food stuffs. Many females died in child birth so who was taking care of the other children that were left without a mother. So this means that women were taking care of there children and their dead sisters' and mothers' children. I also think while it is true that women did a majority or the work as it relates to the children the men were most likely very involved with the young men starting at the age of 11 when they could participate in hunting activities and act as a support in hunting camps. The younger girls 7-13 were were most likely assisting in with childcare and food processing. I lived in PA and watch Amish children, boys and girl, preform many farm duties that you work associate with adults. The producers of this reality program jumped us into a time period without any of the basic social structure that would have realistically been in place. Young women would have also married and a very young age and this helped divide and redistribute people and labor through the clan. You could see from the video many were OK to just sit and do nothing. After spending time in the military, getting a job done meant everyone giving a 110% till the job was done. When I returned to civilian life I was surprised how different things can be when it come to getting something done. I think this program told us a lot about who we are as a people today and that is scary!
P.S. Billy gave that 110% as well as a few others.
-
Iowabow good point we are also looking at people with a modern mentality and outlook. Our ancestors probably saw things a bit differently. Ronnie
-
Also, the people that seemed like they weren't doing much were probably thinking "I just have to make it a few more days". I suspect if this was a long-term situation, their behaviors would have been much different.
-

I know what you mean about transitioning back to civilian life. If I remember correctly, there was a guy on the show that claimed to be a former MP in the Army and as I recall, he was one of the ones that was not contributing very much. As a former MP myself, I felt that he didnt represent the Army very well or veterans in general. While I have never lived this primitive I have definatly lived without creature comforts. During those times everyone pitched in to improve our living situation, and if this guy were ever in my unit he would have had a rude awakening. I feel that had this been a real situation where they had no choice but to survive, that things would have been alot different or they might have found themselves trying to fend for thier own.
-
Tennyson said is best:
"Tho' Nature, red in tooth and claw"
The hunting scene when they walked up on the wounded elk was emotionally powerful, but that is the way the natural world works.
When Billy talked about how emotional it is to take an animal's life I knew EXACTLY what he meant.
We as hunters kill what we love. If we every lose the empathy towards an animal for taking it's life then I feel it is time to hang up the bows and arrows and search our souls for what is missing.
That's my briar and I am sticking to it! If you don't like it....sue me.
Great job.
-
I wish Billy would say more about the kill. Did the atlatal bring it down or not. Was the thing tranquilized or rifle shot? The elk were in velvet so I doubt they are wild and certainly didn't act like it. Are they farm raised pets ? It seems fake and there is no pride to be taken in killing farm raised animals with any weapon. Fraud is fraud. I'm calling bull$*&^ .
-
Pride in an easy kill that was not "sporting" is a modern concept. VERY modern. It has nothing to do with survival or subsistence hunting. How bloody hard do you think it is to stick a harpoon into a whale? But to the Inuit it is the difference between life and death, it ain't sport...it's making sure you don't sit around all winter watching your children's bellies distend from malnutrition.
Paleolithic people didn't book guided hunts to Africa to challenge their jaded, overweight, lazy, too much pizza and beer guts so they could "put one in the record books". I bet they were willing to follow the great herds and gleefully snatch newborn animals even before they were able to stand! Great fair chase ethics, eh?
Sorry if I come off sounding a little angry, the show was there to give people a glimpse into the difficulties of our common ancestors, not perfectly replicate their lives. We cannot do a huge film soundstage "Truman Show" style and take orphans to raise like nomadic hunter-gatherers just for entertainment on the one-eyed idiot box. It's not real life, it's just TV!
-
Is this show going to be on youtube? I did not get to watch it. My Girlfriend was supposed to tape it for me, but she taped "Man Cave" instead. After my spelling it for her, several times. And she says "I" don't listen!
Wayne

Well said JW, that should answer any qustions. :) :) Wayne I ant sure about that but if it is like most of the history channel shows it will be on several times. :) :)

I do have it on DVR.

Darnit I missed this show and it sounds like it was pretty good, will it be playing again or can you buy it any where? Thanks

More on what we have turned into;
I read a narrative about a scout master who took a bunch of kids into the Arizona desert on a survival trip to see how they reacted.
He found that 20% of the kids thought it was a great adventure, ate bugs and lizards from day one and actually thrived on the experience.
60% of the kids took a few days of hunger to start foraging and eating what ever they could find but overall didn't enjoy the experience.
20% of the kids withdrew, wouldn't eat or drink no matter how hungry they were. These kids were quickly in a life threatening situation and had to be removed from the experiment.
The caveman project mirrors the same type of reaction from the participants as the boy scouts.
-
An unnerving number of people in this forum couldn't wait to go out to the Arizona desert with the Scouts, but voluntarily started eating bugs, lizards, bark, and drinking brown water out of a cow track!
;D
Eric? Is that heavy dental floss hanging from the corner of your mouth or a mouse's tail?
-
Just saw this show over the weekend, it was very entertaining! Billy, you are the man! Would love to hear the "behind the scenes" stories about this production.
