Title: Standing dead ash
Post by: MWirwicki on September 26, 2011, 12:18:35 pm
Doing a bit of deer scouting over the weekend, I noticed some tall, straight but DEAD ash trees.  Likely from the Emerald Ash Borers but, don't know for certain.

Has anyone cut intact looking, standing dead ash trees and had any success making a bow with it?

I wondered the same Matt. I see no reason it would work. I dont know how deep the bores go, but I bet you could get past the damage. It also would depend on how long it has been dead.

I cut dead standing ash a couple of years ago, and it was all firewood. I tried to get a bow out of it, but none of it was any good.

I agree with adb.
Whitwoods will decay very fast.
It will be most strange if you get a usable bow from standing dead ash.

I'd use it only for firewood!!!
