Hey fellas,
I'm needing to build a heavy weight bow for Pat B and thought I'd use some mullberry from a stave that toomanyknots give me a long time ago. Well this was a first so I wanted to make sure that all would go well and so I made this bow.
Mullberry, 1/4" sapwood, 53", 50# @ 26" and the stave left "as-is" except the last 6 inches of the upper limb which was heavily deflexed....I made that flat with some steam. Everything else is untouched....roller-coasters, snake, and about 12-15 degrees of propeller twist.
The bow shoots really well and hard, I was suprised by the speed of the little bow. It shoots in the same speed range with my osage and creepe myrtle (which are real quick)
The last photo is my "dead-stick" paint job compared to the bone white sapwood as it was. The finish is the grease and pitch mix. Oh ya, the name means " yellow snake that bites"

Nice bow, definitely way better than I would of done with such a small stave! Very nice! If ya want anymore anytime I still got a couple pieces left.

Nice bow... I love the simple finish you put on your stave bows, it just seems to really go in line with the true primitive spirit.
-
Very cool little bow Rich. I'm sure the recipient will love it and will be hunting with it this year! ;D
Mulberry makes a very good bow. More folks should give it a try.

very nice bow Rich, all the lines are perfect ! when i grow up i wanna build bows like u
RIch did toomany say if it was red or white mulberry
-
Very nice. I get confused because many say mulberry is not up to such a task.
When I was a kid there were red mulberry trees next to the baseball diamond. After practice we would "accidently" throw berries at one another and the stains brought about a real "reckoning" when we got home.
I have acouple billets that I have had for 15 years or so-a mulberry tree fell on my sister's chicken coop. bow making was only a dream at the time and I am sure I missed some possible staves-this bow by Halfeye proves it.
Thanks for posting the pics.

Mulberry makes an excellent bow wood. Not as hard as osage but not as heavy either so they can shoot the same with a little more wood in the mulberry bow.
-
Thanks Pat. It is good to know that mulberry trees still entertain young boys! I am new to this. I have made a couple kids bows from small hickory trees and boards, a few BBO's and BBI's. I enjoy the helpfulness found here.
