Hey fellas,
Met the neighbor (a 14 yr old friend of my granddaughter) turns out Tyler was going hunting this archery season for the first time. He was talkin about how his compound needed to be "tunned-in" before he could practice. Talked with Tyler about 30 min and it was clear he needed a primitive set-up.
Gave him a couple bows and a set of arrows......and danged if this guy cant shoot....bare fingered, off the knuckle, and thinks stick bows rule (that's a quote). He draws and shoots a 45# bow very well and no signs of fatigue or caving in to the weight. After a few short lessons he is shooting 8-10 inch groups at 15 yards consistantly. He's real interested in building his own equipment so I hope to encourage him further.
I took a few pics to see what all of ya thought.....I think he ought to join up so you fellas can help him with his questions......anyway here's the pics, see what ya think

Great story, Rich! Tiller looks excellent on that bow. Didn't know you made long bows (ha-ha). Yeah, I'd say he's hooked.

Get him to join!!! Then I'll have someone on here who's actually my close to my age! Tell him I'm impress it took me three summers of shooting probably 2 hours a day to get that kind of accuracy at 20 yards... I can't believe he got it down that fast... Must have been the teacher... :)

I like these quotes on top of other quotes haha, but yeah man im apllying all instate this year so hopefully i can drive home and use my dads shop like i have been doin lately. Another thing is u could just bring your drawknife, scrapers, tillering stick, and a couple other small items with you to college and just find a storage area for ur staves (or a willing friends dorm/apartment/house). So i dont think we'll be completely cut off but it'll definitely hurt to be away from the house without all the usual nifty tools(I.E no more usin dads bandsaw :( )

Rich, your generosity continues to shine and I hope it always will.
And you young bloods worrying about space to build , don't sweat it. I have built many a bows in hotel rooms and dinky apartments. I'm a railroad engineer and haul tools and stave's around for something to do in my downtime. Of course short bows are perfect for this and the amount of tools are minimal. I use three. A scraper, a sureform, and a tillering gizmo.

Nice job with the recruitment, Rich. Looks like he's hooked, and hopefully he'll have some influence on his buddies.

I agree Rich, he liooks like a natural. Good work in makin him see sense and if your his neighbour he'll no doubt be making fine bows himself before long...

That my friend is how we pass along the beauty of stick and strings.
Well done indeed sir.

Knowing how you are, that fine young man did not stand a chance once he expressed one iota of interest. He could not be in better hands!!
